' 20 ' SPORTS FOOTBAll SENIOR TEAM The Senior team, composed of ninth and tenth grade boys, had a fair season, winning two and dropping three. The team traveled to Germantown and came home with a 26-0 victory in the first game. Whitehaven defeated the stubborn but outclassed MUS eleven in a rough game at Whitehaven. Leading only 7-0 at halftime, the county boys rotated freely and wore the defense down for three more scores, winning 28-0. At Gaisman Park, a big Treadwell team trounced MUS 32-0. Again, the difference was in the second half. A 6-0 halftime lead was increased almost at will in the latter stages of the game. The record was evened with an exciting victory over Bartlett. MUS held a precarious 2-0 advantage at intermission, but drove consistently to increase the lead to 23-6. Then Bartlett struck quickly to score three touchdowns and hold a 26-23 edge. Then, with seconds remaining, Claude Crawford threw apasstoLannyButler who fumbled it when tackled. Worth Brown, however, picked up the loose ball and tallied the winning points, making the final score 30-26. A trip to Franklin, Tennessee to play Battle Ground Academy netted a good time for all but a thorough defeat at the hands of thehosts, 39-6. A 6-6 tie was broken early in the second quarter as the rain stalled our offense. BGA ' s fleet backs scampered around the ends in the second half and chalked up three more touchdowns to put the out come game out of doubt. JUNIOR TEAM The Junior team also opened against Germantown, winning28-7. Tom Keesee was the stand- out, scoring 15 points. A night game with Frayser ended in a 0-0 tie, both teams performing equally. Frayser ' s strong defense halted the MUS drives, keeping the game scoreless. At Training, MUS faced a 14 point deficit before the game was five minutes old. But two touchdowns evened the count at half and a series of drives produced the touchdown for the victory, 20-14. The East B team fell to MUS, 14-0. East never really threatened and the substitutes finished the game. Longview Heights engaged MUS at Bellevue Park and lost, 14-0. Again MUS dominated play, but the Longview Heights defense refused to be overrun. The last game of the season was possibly the best. Millington fought on an even keel until the final whistle, 13-13. With the score 13-6, Millington drove to the yard line with a minute to play. The tough MUS defense held for two downs but Millington finally penetrated to the end zone, tying the game. At the season ' s end a banquet was held in the auditorium with Captain Joe Clifton as the principal speaker. Claude Crawford was elected Captain and Kerry Patteson Co-Captain for next year ' s team Jim Haygood is the new Junior Captain. 22 SENIOR TEAM FRONT ROW, Left to Right: Manager Charles Crump, End Jack Henard, Halfback Tom Keesee, Quarterback Claude Crawford, Fullback and Captain Kerry Patteson, Halfback Worth Brown, Halfback Clyde Patton, End Frank Smith, MIDDLE ROW: Guard Lee Taylor, Guard Ted Bailey, Halfback Allen Malone, Tackle Dave Boone, Tackle Dave Wieties, Tackle Fowler Cooper, Guard Clayton Sims. The basketball team of M. U. S. had a very favorable season, gaining momentum at the season ' s end and a high regard from the other teams. Highly favored Messick and Hollywood fell to the Owls in the latter stages of the campaign, along with Bellevue. Second-place Humes and mighty South Side both edged M.U.S. , but not until a long, hard struggle was completed. In the tournament, we again drew Humes. The scrappy M.U.S. quintet persistently held the mar- gin down. Finally with 15 secondsremaining, Haygood sank four consecutive free throws to knot the score at 41-41. Two overtime periods followed, netting a 43-43 tie, Haygood again firing the important basket. In a sudden death playoff, a free throw gave the Baby Tigers the victory. For his 20 point effort in this game, Jim Haygood was selected on the all -tournament team. Further recognition came to the eighth grade Captain when he was selected for the second team All-Memphis five. It is with confidence that we look forward into the future. 27 i mfmM, i 0 ! STANDING, Left to Right: Nickey Nicholson, Jimmy Thomas, Alfred Andersson, Robert Ray, C. D. Smith, Alex Wellford, Lee Taylor. The MUS NEWS was published for the first time this past year by a very capable staff and the assistance of Mr. Knight, the faculty advisor. Feature editorials and the events of the school were the main topics discussed in the paper. We are eagerly looking forward into the future for an even finer school newspaper. 34 ANNUAL STAFF SEATED, Left to Right: Bob Walters and Claude Crawford, Co-Editors. STANDING: Tom Keesee, Mac McLaren, Jack Goldsmith, Charles Crump, Lanny Butler, Stanley Hutter. The 1956 Sabre was the first yearbook of the school and the boys worked together to make it possible. Despite limited sources of information and experience, and considering the usual setbacks, the staff did a very creditable job. 35 HONOR COUNCIL SEATED IN CLOCKWISE ORDER: Robert Ray. Dan McGown. Vice-President. BiU Butler; President, Claude Crawford; Stanley Hutter, Alex Wellford. Jim Haygood, Faculty Advisor, Mr ' C. M. Pipkin. The Honor Council is the highest governing body of students at Memphis University School. It is comprised of a President, and Vice-President, both from the 10th grade, and one repre- sentative from the 9th grade, and each of the two sections of the 7th and 8th grades. They are all elected by secret baUot. The chief function is to supervise the Honor System, the three specific offenses being lying, cheating, and stealing. The duties are to investigate every case reported and to clear a student if he is innocent, and to recommend procedure if he is guilty. The existence of an Honor Council provides the basis for the establishment of a sound and workable Honor System whereby the high prestige and character of the school is maintained. 36 STUDENT GOVERNMENT LEFT TO RIGHT: Robert Dillard, Bill Butler, Lanny Butler, and Dudley Weaver. NOT PICTURED: Claude Crawford. The four class presidents compose the Student Governnaent, with Mr. Thorn as faculty ad- visor. The function is largely that of managing student affairs. This includes supervising stu- dent elections, selling tickets to athletic events, and maintaining a monitoring system. The principal job of the group this year has been to adopt a constitution and hold elections for next year. 37 SOCIAL COMMITTEE SEATED, Left to Right: Sam Carter, Tom Keesee, Worth Brown. Claude Crawford, Frank Smith. STANDING: Mr. Gene Thorn. Mr. C. M. Pipkin, Faculty Advisors. The Social Committee is composed of elected representatives from the four grades, two each from the 8th. 9th, and 10th and one from the Ixh grade.
