Bfii As the decade neared its end, it was a controversial year, one that had many unpleasant shocks as well as surprising triumphs. The Shah fell from power in Iran, and across the globe the deaths of both Pope Paul VI and John Paul I were mourned. Pressures were eased in the Middle East as Egyp- tian President Anwar Sadat and Israeli Premier Menacham Begin were awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. A doctor in England helped create the world ' s first test-tube baby, Louise Brown, amid con- troversy while the Reverend Jim Jones led 900 followers of the Peo- ple ' s Temple into mass suicide in Guyana. Proposition 13 was a hit in Califor- nia and spread across the country while Cleveland Mayor Dennis Kucinich barely survived a recall vote.
