DeSoto may have envisioned gigantic bridges that would one day span the muddy current. Could he have dreamed that the Mississippi River would be the ar- tery of a magnificent nation? H e connected the history of the Mississippi Valley with the golden years of the Renaissance. Men of that period were deeply in- terested in the world and to most of them, it appeared as a beautiful rainbow with pots of gold at either end. The Renaissance was an age of discovery.
