y Official Publication of MEMPHIS STATE UNIVERSITY Memphis, Tennessee foreword The South has long had a color and mood unlike any other section of the country. It is our ambition to imbue this annual with the vitality of jazz, the many moods of the blues, the color of the paddle wheelers, perhaps even the sense of honor that motivated the duel- ists of the early 1 800 ' s, to present an annual fresh with the spirit of the old — an old that is forever new. To the citizens from all walks of life who, either knowingly or unknowingly, provide a home for this university. The very existence of our school is dependent on this city. Memphis has pro- vided most of our student body, faculty, and campus. We the students hope to become intelligent, and active citizens as we know you wish us to become. A land in which every white man owned slaves and in which every Southern girl was a paragon of beauty. Colonial homes were supposed to have been the abiding place of all people in the Old South. This legend still lives in the minds of many people today. The 1960 DeSoto will at- tempt to perpetuate that part of the legend which is good and true. This issue of a south- ern university student yearbook labors under no illusions concerning the traditional south. It would like to create an awareness among its readers of the present south. We still have with us many of the same political and economic problems of yesteryear. However, we have done much to balance industry with agriculture, we have shorn the shackles of a one-crop system, we have improved the conditions under which people work and live, and we have lost that degree of provincialism which kept us for so many years an isolated section of the nation. The DeSoto believes that our people are ready to resume their once proud position at the council table of the nation. We are clothing ourselves in raiment of our own manu- facture, we are again sending our young people into the practice of the professions in the east and north, to work in the industrial plants of Detroit and Chicago, and to teach in the large institutions of higher learning in the nation. These changes, however, do not make us unaware of our proud heritage. We still sing DIXIE at football games and we yet hold sacred the traditions of the past. Possibly, W. J. Cash is right in his assumption that the south is a state of mind. If such is the case it is a proud and glorious state of mind, worth cherishing to the extent that it does not interfere with our progress. The 1960 DeSoto is glad to believe in the south of mystery and legend and to pay to the traditions of the past the proper degree of respect. We face the present and future with confidence in the ability of our graduates to solve the not insurmountable problems which face us in the present. Enoch L. Mitchell Chairman, Department of History 15 They ' ll never make it . . . never 16 Some choose the intellectual approach . . . administration J. AA. (JACK) SMITH, president of Memphis State University This 1960 edition of The DeSoto records another great year in the surging life of Memphis State University. Here through the medium of pictures are perpetuated the faces of our associates and friends, and here also are the familiar scenes where we lived and worked and played together. The magic of words enables us to relive many of the activities and events which have made 1959-60 a truly remarkable school year, one of the best in our history. I am confident that all of the young men and women who occupy a place in this University record will lead richer lives and will be finer citizens because of the knowledge gained, the experiences shared, and t.he friendships made on this campus. To them we shall look in the years to come for the responsible leadership so vitally needed by our nation and by the world. For this record, I should like to state that Memphis State University reached an all-time high enrollment of 4,964 students for the Fall Semester of 1959-1960. This large number of students taxed all of the available resources of our institution and indicated clearly the need for additional resources for the future. As your president, I join with all other members of the Memphis State University administrative staff and faculty in congratulating the DeSoto staff on this splendid publication and in wishing happy and suc- cessful lives for all of you. Southern got its six points in the second period with a 40 yard march. State got rolling again in the third period when Buoni re- covered a Southern fumble on the enemy 35. Nine plays later he bootlegged the last 4 yards around right end. James Earl Wright, playing at full speed for the first time since the Tiger ' s opener, directed the Tigers ' 84 yard march to paydirt. Wright scored on a one yard sneak. Alabama intercepted a State pass on our 1 1 yard line and went on to score. Their two point conversion made the score 8 to 7. Early in the fourth quarter, Alabama scored again. This touchdown was also by the aerial route. The Tigers started from their own 28 yard line and marched to the Alabama 3 where James Earl Wright made the most controversial play of our season. We thought he scored but the officials did not, and so the score ended up 14 to 7 in favor of Alabama. ••■-,. • I. ' . MEMPHIS STATE 100 RICHMOND 74 Memphis State ' s all around balance was too much for Richmond as the Tigers walked over the Spiders 100 to 74. By controlling the boards and having six players hitting in double figures, the Tigers showed what a balanced team can do. George Price took scoring honors with 16 points. MEMPHIS STATE 83 FLORIDA STATE 67 The Tigers, utilizing a 50 point first half, downed Florida State 83 to 67. The tough defense of the Tigers kept Florida State from scoring a field goal in the last 4! 2 minutes of play. This was the Tigers ' fourteenth victory. George Price hit 23 points to win scoring honors for the Tigers. My, but you ' re soft. FRED MANGUM Mangum fires for two. TED LANE Lane drives for two against Richmond. 259 MEMPHIS STATE 75 UNIVERSITY OF WICHITA 79 i HEAD COACH BOB VANATTA The University of Wichita handed the Tigers their fourth defeat of the season 79 to 75. Yates and Wilfong played their best games of the year yet the Wichita Shockers lived up to their name by pulling the game away from the Tigers grasp in the closing minutes of this more than exciting road exhibition. Even though he fouled out, Gene Wilfong was the big gun for the Tigers as he scored 23 points. MEMPHIS STATE 54 LOYOLA 38 The Memphis State Tigers gained their Fifteenth victory over a defense minded Loyola five. It was the Tigers ' game all the way and the display of defensive prowess was a forecast of things to come for the NIT bound Tigers. George Price was high scorer with 17 points. MEMPHIS STATE 70 OKLAHOMA CITY 66 Memphis State ' s victory margin came from the free-throw line as they defeated Oklahoma City 70 to 66. An Oklahoma rally nearly threatened to ruin the road trip, but the Tigers did not falter and staved off the rally. George Price scored 22 points to lead the Tigers in scoring. MEMPHIS STATE 96 SPRINGHILL 55 The Tigers toyed with the Badgers of Springhill and buried them 96 to 55. All ten of the Tigers scored in this game with George Price coming out on top with 24 points. MEMPHIS STATE 79 LOYOLA 63 Memphis State closed its regular season with a routine 79 to 63 victory over Loyola. The Tigers controlled both backboards while hitting 47.9% of their shots. George Price had his biggest night of the year hitting 26 points which was tops for the Tigers. Courageous Memphis State staged a tremendous come from behind effort, continually looking for that break that never came. Coach Bob Vanatta not only summed-up this game but the team ' s effort all season by saying, I was proud of the way, they fought back. They never quit. Kirk hits short one. Price scores under pressure. Wilfong hits from the free throw line. £. ■Diebold and Horton watch Ingold drop it through. The young freshman tigers ended their season with 19 victories and 3 losses. It was one of the finest records ever compiled by a freshman team. Jim Ingold, a 6 ft. 7 in. forward, from Morton, Illinois, led the young tigers in total points, free throw percentage, and rebounds. The Midwesterner scored 453 points in 22 games for an average of 20.5 points per game. In free throws Jim made good 1 14 of 135 attempts for a fantastic 84.4 percent and cleared the boards 381 times. Second to Jim in scoring was James Horton, who scored a total of 430 points for an average of 19.5 points per game and hit 76.5 percent from the charity line. Larry Garber, the hustling guard from Kingsport, Tennessee, scored 356 points for an average of 16.1 points per game and hit an excellent 82.5 percent from the free throw line. The young tigers scored 1,981 points to their opponents 1, 752 and averaged 90 points per game. Yes, guns up on the 1960 Track season for Memphis State. The speedsters are faster and have more depth this year. Captain Scott McDill leads the 1960 track team. Scott is a distance man. In the sprints the team is lead by Richard Vollmer and Giff Edgerton while Ned Fallat and John Barber lead the 440 men. Mike Hopper and Cecil Smith lead the hurdle men while Bob Lewis is the weight man. Tom Jackson, of basketball fame, is also a weight man and Phil Kibbey, another basketball asset, is our leading high jumper. Jackson ' s ability with the discus will probably make him Memphis State ' s top weight man. The distance men are rounded out by Edgar Trotter, James Mabile, Joe Wallace, Larry Long and freshmen Jimmy Madden, Joe Ragland, and Lewis Trotter. Gene Scandland is also a freshman that runs the sprints. FRONT ROW, Left to right: Mike Hopper, Gene Scanlon, Jimmy Madden, Giff Edgerton, Richard Vollmer, Joe Ragland, and Scott McDill.
