CMS assists in academic and athletic schol- arships plus helping support the Shakespeare Festival and the Festival of Arts. The group is advocating an enlarged curriculum and expanded plant facilities. The Alumni Association, with a membership of more than 5,000, has an Advisory Council composed of representatives from the 21 West Tennessee counties. Excepting the fact that Memphis State was unable to go to any post-season tournament, the squad had a pleasant year in carving out a 17-6 record. No serious injuries or costly drop- offs hampered the team as it did the year before. MSU opened the year with a 105-56 walloping of Chattanooga and went on from there to six victories in a row before bowing to Mississippi State in the finals of the Sugar Bowl Tournament. Loyola of New Orleans was defeated in the tourney ' s opening round. Early season victims included Alabama, Hardin-Siinmons and Toronto. The Alabama contest was the year ' s first thriller with the Tigers winning 59-55 behind the sparkling play of sub Gene Wilfong. The Tigers hit their peak in the game with Oklahoma City which immediately followed the loss to Mississippi State. Playing at the Memorial Fieldhouse, MSU fashioned a 66-61 win as little Joe Gummersbach sank four clutch free throws in the closing thirty seconds of the game. The Chiefs were rated 12th in the country before the loss was inflicted upon them. Memphis State had hot and cold nights in the second half of the year. One of their better efforts came in a losing cause in a rematch game with the highly touted Maroons of Mississippi State. Playing on the neutral Auditorium court the Tigers went down by a 53-52 score. Perhaps the team ' s best game came in the next to last one of the season against Loyola. Memphis State had split two previous tilts with the New Orleanians on their court but this game was played in the Fieldhouse and the Tigers waltzed to the tune of a 96-62 score. In all probability, the most exciting game was the second duel with Tennessee Tech late in the season. Earlier the Eagles captured Memphis State at Cookville, but again the Tigers proved true on their own court by a 63-60 win. Memphis was down seven points at half time but opened the second half by scoring 13 points before TPI could scratch. Head Coach Bob Vanatta used the same lineup of Jim Hockaday, Orby Arnold, George Price, Skip Wolfe and Joe Gummersbach throughout the season. Arnold and Hockaday led in scoring with Price not far behind. Gummersbach and Wolfe were the spark behind the drive. Subs Wil- fong. Lowery Kirk. Oscar Ammer, Tim Buff, Fred Mangum and Phil Kibbey saw plenty of play- ing time also. The following officers were elected; President, Steve Blockman; Vice-Presi- dent, John Whitmore ; and Statistician-Treasurer, Jack Johnson. The teams were formed at the initial meeting with actual competition beginning the following week. The Junior Buds stated in first place and have maintained the top position throughout the season. Heading the top average list is Max Waggerman. Jr. who has been hitting the maples at a 186 clip. SUghtly behind Max is Jack Johnson with a 183 average. Fol- lowing this pair are Frank Conyers, 167; Steve Blockman, 163; and Dave Kohner. 160. The league has been favorably accepted because it affords everyone at Memphis State an opportunity to compete in an intramural sport individually. League Champions will be presented with trophies as will the holder of the top average, and the possesser of the high series. There is a handicap system in use in all league competition, therefore the beginner is able to compete on a par with the better bowlers. This is one of the main factors attributing to the general success of the league. Steve Blockman, left, and Max Waggerman, Jr., right, roll toward a higher score as Jack Johnson and David Kohner await their turn on the alleys.
