In 1 91 8 few courses in science were taught at the Normal School, as M. S. C. was called then, and few students were interested in such courses. There was only one laboratory for chemistry and physics, and little equipment. Today, with two entire floors of Manning Hall devoted to science and four well-equipped labo- ratories for chemistry alone, the college has placed heavy emphasis on science. Red Cross courses in first aid, nutrition, and home nursing are in demand ; and specialized courses of interest to students in the Reserve Corps of the armed forces, such as the History of Sea Power, are being offered. Furthermore, since there is great need for war workers in airplane and ordnance factories, and for typists, stenographers, bookkeepers and other office work- ers, much emphasis has been placed also on courses in commerce and the industrial arts.
