Don ' t shut yourself up in a cage, With flunkeys at the door To keep out all except a few, — That ' s not done any more. Don ' t build up harriers of class; For every man on earth Is hrother to his fellow-man, No matter what his hirth. FOOTBALL CAPTAIN ROLAND MacMACKIN Only about forty people knew last September that State Teachers College could hiive an undefeated sea- son, and they were the players and coaches who made the season successful. When the Tutors whipped Millsaps College 19-0 down at Jackson, Mississippi, a few seemed to think of the times net very long past when to win one game a season was almost unbelievable. When the Tutors made their inaugural appearance at the Fairgrounds the night of September 24, their many fans were agreeably surprised at the way in which this team clicked. Haggard Cherry, a newcomer to the squad, amazed the crowd by his ability to run, pass and block. Skeeter Ellis, one of the best climax runners seen in Memphis, amazed the crowd by his long runs, which were set up by the great teamwork of the rest of the squad. Coming from behind, the Tutors defeated their opponents, Louisiana College, by the score of 14-6. For the second straight week, the Tutors had to come from behind to defeat a better than average Arkansas State College team at Jonesboro by the score of 38-2. Returning to Memphis the following week, the Tutors went after the scalps from Cumberland l niversity and came out of the track meet with 68 points against o for their opponents. The first real test of the Tutors ' strength came at Crump Stadium the next Friday night. Against a heavier and larger squad, the Teachers were able to defeat the Middle Tennessee Teachers children by a 25-7 score. Packing their warpaint atid armour, the Tutors jour- neyed to Cookeville to talk things over with a team that was rated one of the best in the conference, but when the candles were blown out that night, and large glow was still coming from the score board which said that the Memphis boys had won, 26-13. At Crump Stadium the following Saturday afternoon, the Tigers defeated the Red and White boys from Arkansas A. M. by the score of 50-0. By this time everyone was beginning to smell an undefeated season. They had won seven games and seemed to be getting stronger every game. Ellis was still piling up touchdown after touchdown, and the band was learning to play Flat Foot Flugie better. Vou might recall that Skeeter remarked over the radio that all he needed when he was playing, was for the band to play this song, and then he could really go. The Warriors from Troy, Alabama, were the next hit and run victim of the Tigers. When the battle was over, the Tigers had victory number eight painted on their walls. Teachers 20, Troy 6. Most people were beginning to believe that all good things had to end the following week end, for it looked like the powerful Union llniversity squad might make the Tigers roar just a little quieter. After starting off like a house afire by making it 13-0, the Tigers seemed to bog down and were very glad to get out of the game with their ninth victory, 13-7. In one of the muddiest games ever played, the Teach- ers played the Delta State boys at Cleveland. Right on the start Paul Hicks plunged through the center of the line for a first down on the Generals ' ten yard line, but the pig began to squeal and someone turned him over to the Delta boys. At the half the score was 0-0. At the beginning of the fourth (juarter, Skeeter Ellis was sent into the game with his clean and dry suit. He made a jack knife dive around right end, hit the bottom of the pool at the side lines, and then started swimming for the other end of the pool and got there and found himself alone and with six points on the scoreboard. Not long after that, one of our boys found himself in the way of one of their kicks and got two more points for his efforts. Teachers 8, Delta State o. To sum it all up. State Teachers Tigers scored 281 to their opponents ' 41. Ellis was a member of the S.I.A.A. all star team and Roland MacMackin was a member of the second team. By the time the season was ended, there was much talk about a post season game with San Jose State College in California, but for some reason this game was not played. -MICPWEL K.VAU6HAM FAMNO ZM£COK MCCOMUS GAR.DNeiC ' ' PAkP. - ENOCW yja Hiwii MATHEWS CALMOUN V--a ' ' ' PALMER J V Ki r. u FRESHMEN (Left to Right) COACH McKEEN, COTTON, ESGROVE, IVEY, GOLDSMITH, McLEMORE, SMITH, PARRY, PERRY, WILLIAMS, ALLEN, GLASS, JACKSON I SOPHOMORE TACKLES (Left to RiRht) BILL McGINNIS, MURRAY BLURTON, JAMES CONLEE, CK)RDON SCOCJGINS. There were many games that were much more exciting than the scores indicated. Murray Teach- ers came here and got the scare of their lives, and were barely able to nose out the Tigers. Arkansas defeated the Tutors by a slim margin at Jonesboro, but this defeat was avenged over here with the Tigers beating their ears down. In a post season game at Osceola, Arkansas, the Tigers fought a nip and tuck battle with the Arkansas aggregation but were finally beaten by two points. The Freshman team was the most successful in the School History. They defeated Southwest- ern, and most of their city foes. In the Tri-State Tournament, the Freshmen won the class B part. With the addition of these All State and All Memphis players, the Tutors cage squad should be one of the leading teams in the con- ference. (The Editor wishes to express regret in not having pictures of all the Freshman squad, but these players were not present at the time the pictures were supposed to be made.) GIRLS ' ATHLETICS MRS. ETHEL BLACKMAN, Director VIKINGS Mrs. Ethel Blackman, director of women ' s athletics, instituted our present intra-mural program in the fall of 1936. Its present popularity is due to the interest in the program and the large number that take an active part in it. The Danes and Vikings are the two teams com- posed of the outstanding athletes on the campus. The sorority tournament was won by the Xi Beta Nu Sorority for the second straight year. The four teams showed good sportsmanship and interest in each of their games. These pictures show some of the many various activities on our campus.
