In keeping with the times, it was called the new deal. In the two previous seasons, the Teachers had fallen behind in football; their mate- rial did not in any way equal that of their opponents, and the student body, as a whole, had almost withdrawn its support. However, an entirely new system was installed this year, new players were recruited, and student support was renewed. Coach Allyn McKeen, former University of Tennessee gridder and erstwhile assistant coach of the Teachers, was selected to pilot the new deal. Coach Cecil Sonny Hum- phreys, another former University of Tennessee ace, was selected to serve as line coach. He came from the University of Tennessee Junior College and brought eight of his former gridmen with him. The Tennessee System was installed, and a small squad of 21 players began the process of putting State Teachers College back on the football map. Although the Teachers triumphed in only three of their nine games this year, they proved to footba ll enthusiasts of this territory that the Teachers Tigers were again in the race and would be prominent in S. I. A. A. competition in 1938. The Middle Tennessee Blue Raiders, defending conference champions, gave the Teachers a 21 to 6 defeat in their first game at Murfreesboro; then the Tigers returned home for their second contest and conquered the Austin Peay Red Terrors, 20 to 6, on a rain-drenched gridiron. The Tigers ' greatest achievement of the season came in their third attempt, when they annihilated the Union University Bulldogs, 13 to 2, at Jackson. Delta ' s Statesmen took advantage of a weakened Tutor team in gaining a well earned 19 to 14 decision in the Memphians second home game. Louisiana College s Wildcats broke loose in the third period to take a 7 to o decision at Pineville, ha., the following week. The Tigers made a sensational comeback a week later to trounce Jacksonville, Ala., Teachers, 46 to o, in Memphis. After holding Murray s Thoroughbreds scoreless for three quarters, the Tigers weakened in the final period and lost by a score of 19 to o. Tennessee Tech s Eagles put on a last-quarter rally to take a 14 to 13 victory over the Teachers in their annual homecoming game at Crump Stadium; and the Tutors fell before the Troy, Ala., Teachers, 12 to 6, in their final game. He took the pick of the crop from the city schools of Memphis and All-State players from some of the leading high school teams in Tennessee. The 1 iger Cubs participated in only four games this year, but their performance proved that their group will be the back- bone of the State Teachers College teams during the next three years. The freshmen started the season in a mud battle with the Mississippi College freshmen and plowed through to a 15 to o victory. Northwest Mis- sissippi Junior College s Rangers fell 39 to o in the next game, and the Teachers returned the game at Senatobia, Miss., by taking a second victory, 15 to o. Their biggest game of the season was the first step in renewing athletic relations with Southwestern, and although they dropped a 7 to o decision they proved to football fans of Memphis that the Teacbcrs would soon be able to assume a prominent place in Mid-South football circles. The Cubs are a powerful group of huskies and there are indications that a pair of coaches are going to have a hard time picking a starting lineup next fall when they reinforce the varsity. Action! Miss Mary Leath, kindergarten-primary supervisor of the Memphis schools, assisted Miss Ellen Davies, professor of early elementary education, and the thirty-five charter members in perfecting the organization. The officers elected to guide the work of the association during its first year were: Nora Blassingame, President; Sarah Lee Miller, Vice-President; Ida Pearl Mann, Secretary, and Clara Mae Harris, Treasurer. The purpose of the Association for Childhood Education is to secure the cooperation of all who are interested in nursery-school, kindergarten and early ele- mentary education for their betterment through greater use of activities, greater freedom of thought and method, and a closer relationship between all levels of child growth. Membership in the organization is open to all students and faculty members of the college who are interested in early childhood education. A luncheon meeting is held in Mrs. Ellen Davies Rodgers room on the second Friday in each month. At these meetings are interesting programs concerning the needs of the young child and the teacher s work with the child. The club keeps in close contact with Memphis and Shelby County Associations for Childhood Education. Each year the A. C. E. has charge of an assembly program in the college audito- rium. The annual Christmas party is one of the most enjoyable and auspicious occasions at the college prior to the holiday season. The A. C. E. is affiliated with the Tennessee A. C. E. The organization sends representatives to the state meetings in Nashville each year. Delegates to the national meetings in Detroit, Cleveland, New York and Cincinnati have been sent during different years. Those who have served the organization in the capacity of president are: Nora Blassingame, Flocene Strickland, Martha Whitaker. Ora Graham, Lillian Carter. GJ These services directly contribute to the convenience and comfort of people hourly each day. They have raised living standards, Drought us up to a new plane of material existence, and are, in fact, the agencies by which modern living standards are maintained. QJ Without these services present-day conditions would be turned backward half a century, and we would revert to the days of the. tallow candle and the ox-drawn cart. QJ In addition to their contribution to the convenience and comfort of people so constantly, utilities are economic factors of important worth to their com- munities—stimulating channels of trade and business activities with their large pay-rolls and immense purchase of supplies, as well as being large taxpayers helping to defray expenses of government.
