Training for college seniors and instruction for the pupils is the two-fold purpose of the State Teachers College Training School which was built and officially opened in 1923. The school provides six months training in observational and actual teaching for approximately 125 college seniors each year. Each student is assigned to a classroom teacher for that particular grade, and in addition, permitted to participate in as many school activities as he desires. In addition, the school provides an apportunity for directed observation for students other than seniors. The training school is under the administration of the college and is partially maintained by the City Board of Education. It has a faculty of fifteen teachers, all but one having M.A. degrees and having had more than four years ' experience in supervision and instruction. R. M. Robison, principal, is director of practice teaching. A consistent program of recreation is carried out with the help of the physical education department of the college. This year the girls basketball team was runner-up in the district junior high tournament. •♦«E 19 H- 1935 DE SOTO 1936 THE DE SOTO 1936 Top Row Earl Cruthirds Editor-in-Chief Reginald Ferguson Business Manager Second Row Richard Shaffer Assistant Editor Julia Carter Make-up Horace Colby Assistant Business Manager Third Row Arch Colbrunn Associate Editor Violet Reich Feature Editor Samuel Barnett Class Editor Bottom Row Paul Davis Sports Editor Cooper Roberts Girl Sports Etta Mae Hargraves Activities Mary Jo Tate Art Editor 20  3 +- - 19 35 DE SOTO 1936 SENIORS Nona Drake Helen Ford Memphis Memphis History — English Mathematics — Commerce President, Junior Class, ' 35 Xi Beta Nu, 1933-36 President, Senior Class, ' 36 Vice-President, ' 36 Vice-President, Sophomore Class, Secretary, Senior Class, ' 36 ' 34 Secretary, Sophomore Class, ' 34 A. Starting the season with only 24 eligible asDirants for the varsity eleven and with only two returning lettermen from the preceding season, the Tigers made a rather weak and ineffectual effort to down their opponents in the earlier conflicts of the season, but improved rapidly with experience, holding T. P. I. to a scoreless tie on Memorial Field on November 16th, and ending the season by defeating the Delta State Teachers from Cleveland, Mississippi, by the decisive and overwhelming score of 30 to 0. Those rendering performance of exceptional merit were Sam McClanahan, captain,- Christian Pontius, alternate captain,- Francis Schwaiger, halfback; Johnnie Parsons, halfback; and Nelms Johnson, quarter- back. Future prospects for the Tigers, who sustained only two losses by graduation, are bright. Jimmy Grantham and Norman Mockbee, freshmen, will strengthen the Tigers markedly in their coming campaigns. ■HSE 57 . a +- 193 DE SOTO 1936 BASKETBALL (Left to Right): Barthel Gray Bert Barnes, Riley Harris, Milton Mayo, Reginald Ferguson. GIRLS ' BASKETBALL Stella Schnupp was voted the most valuable player on the basketball team this year and was presented a gold basketball by Mrs. Blackman for her outstanding record. This selection of the most valuable player was based upon good playing ability, plus sportsmanship, team loyalty, cooperation, regular practice, etc. The team as a whole was outstanding in these qualities, so Mrs. Blackman gave each member a miniature basketball pin to show her appreciation. With almost an entirely new squad, the team showed much improvement throughout the season. Next year we are planning to have a bigger and better program of sports,- a variety of intramural sports will be given with the object of a game for every girl and every girl in a game. H8 62  ■DESOTO - FOOTBALL HUGH DREWERY — Center. The excellent performance rendered by Hugh Drewery at the pivot position proved to be a great asset to the Teachers throughout the past season. PAUL DAVIS — Center. Paul Davis will be missing from his position in the center of the Tiger forewall, and his absence will be deeply regretted. He leaves us by graduation. TOM FLEET — Guard. Tom Fleet, sophomore guard, is expected to prove a thorn in the sides of his opponents next year. J. B. PRICE — Guard. Opposing teams found Teachers left guard almost impregnable during the past season. The position was capably filled by J. B. Price. CHRISTIAN PONTIUS — Guard. Porky was a bulwark of strength in the Teachers forewall. He will be back next year to deliver that well-known Punch. OSBORN SMITH — Tackle. Smith performed capably for the Tutors during 1935, and with the ad- vantage of an additional year of experience he should really go places next season. HAIDEN TURNER — Tackle. Turner played his first season of football with the Teachers this season. His playing in the Ole Miss conflict will always be remembered. WALTER EVANS — Tackle. Teachers defensive strength was greatly bolstered by Walt Evans. His offensive work is also commendable. MILTON MAYO — End. This was the first year of college football for Milkum, but not his last one. He will resume his pass-snagging duties when Coach Zach Curlin issues his call for the season of 1936. CHARLES HILL — End. Charlie was a good end and a fine tackier. Watch out you safety men who play against him next year. BOBBIE CLOWER — End. Bobbie was a good man, and was adept at the kick-off. WILLIAM LUMM — End. Billy was a capable reserve during the season, and will offer plenty of competition for a regular berth next year. WILLIAM SUTTON — End. Bill Sutton has shown marked improvement in the performance of his duties at the end position. SAM McCLANAHAN — Fullback. The veteran was, without a doubt, one of the outstanding performers on the gridiron during 1935, and, throughout his entire gridiron career here at S. T. C. He has held All-Mississippi Valley Conference honors. VERNE DAVIS — Fullback. Verne was at a decided disadvantage throughout the 1935 season, but his performance was excellent, and we are expecting great things of him next year. NELMS JOHNSON — Quarterback. Nelms was good both at diagnosing plays and executing them. He was outstanding for his hard and efficient tackling. ALBERT TUCKER — Quarterback. Tuck was an excellent quarterback and could catch passes, too. He was a constant scoring threat to Tiger opponents. OTIS DODD---Halfback. Otis Dodd was a candidate for the State Teachers College eleven for the first time this fall. He is a junior, and will be back with the Tutors again next season. BARTHEL GRAY — Halfback. Injuries kept the gray boy on the bench for the greater part of the season, but, nevertheless, he could go places when called upon. JOHN PARSON — Halfback. Johnnie was a great little ball carrier; he will carry the ball for the Tigers again in 1936. FRANCIS SCHWAIGER— Halfback. Schwaiger ' s passing, punting, and pass receiving during the past season were remarkable. GUYNNE LOWRY- Halfback. Guynne was of much service to the coaches as an all-around utility man. ZACH CURLIN — Coach. Zach Curlin, who has been head coach here at State Teachers College since 1924, has been instrumental in turning out several superior gridiron machines. We hope his future elevens will be as successful as his past ones. ROBERT O ' BRIEN — Manager. Robert O ' Brien proved himself to be just as efficient a manager as he was a player in 1934. We greatly appreciate his services. •♦« ■=  ♦• « 63  1935 DE SOTO 1936 BASKETBALL FRANCIS SCHWAIGER- Forward The burly back of football fame was the mainstay of the basketball five. His deceptive ball handling, accurate goal shooting, and eternal fighting spirit went a long way toward keeping the Tigers in the win column. Not to be forgotten is his everlasting smile which was ready for a team- mate even after the merciless kidding of a basketball bull session. BARTHELL GRAY— Guard The Gray boy made a success of his ' 36 cage season, both on the college team and as manager of the Normal Independents who went through the Tri-State Tournament to take the championship. Gray was another smooth ball handler and his underhand sharpshooting was responsible for many points. MILTON MAYO— Guard The Wildcat of the Tigers would be an appropriate alias for this fighting eager from Cades, as any of his opponents who tried to get the ball from him under the goal will tell you. Although Mayo never managed to do as well as he thought he should, he was always among the high-scorers and no victory was won without Mayo playing an important part in the conquest. His tales of Cades and the Milan High teams will stand a long time before being equalled. If you don ' t believe it, then ask the boys. RILEY HARRIS— Center Windy, as he is known at Teachers, made good use of his height and long legs to keep the tip coming to his team-mates and the ball swishing through the net. College basketball has furnished Windy with all his cage experience, but the fans never guessed it as they watched him cover the court equally well on defense and of fense. JULIAN OWEN— Forward Julian was robbed of the success he was due by a bad knee, which kept him out of many contests, but when he was in there everyone saw what he might do with an even break. His running one-hand shot was guard proof and his tricky fake kept his opponent guard wondering which way that guy will go next. BERT BARNES— Forward B. B. was a little late in getting started, but — when he did — boy, that net just couldn ' t quit swishing. He hit long ones and he hit short ones,- he hit shots that weren ' t supposed to go near the basket, but which nine out of ten times managed to roll through to keep the Tigers in front and Barnes on top. B. B. might have done a little better job of playing with the team, but as a rule, he did pretty well playing with the goal. REGINALD FERGUSON— Center Reg was the handy-andy man of the varsity squad,- he saw service in every game, and gave a good account of himself on each occasion. He was a speedy floor man and his goal shooting was uncanny. This is his second year on the varsity team and with the 1936 squad intact, he promises to be a star on a winning team in 1937. He was ever a sport and a fighter both in victory and defeat. MITCHELL PARSONS— Guard Aside from keeping his companions laughing and returning the wisecracks of eight fast-firing team- mates, Mitch was always ready to do his share toward putting some fire and fight into the team. Playing his first year on the varisty, Parsons showed possibilities which if developed will make him a star of future Teachers cage teams. ANSON SAGE— Forward Bud was always more than ready and willing to get in the game, and when he did, more than once he got by an opponent to sink a long loop shot. If Bud could grow a few more inches, he would ask odds of no one on the basketball court. CHARLEY HILL— Guard Charley, the old reliable of the squad, played his first basketball on the hardwood of Memorial gymnasium this year and from the pleased smile on Mr. Curlin ' s face when he sent Hill trotting on the floor, we judge that he was well pleased with what he knew was about to happen. Charley asked no odds and gave no quarter, he will be a mainstay on Teacher ' s ' 37 team. « 64 • m minis 1935 D E SOTO HHSG91 ' v ' v ' 1936 SIGMA ALPHA MU Top Rov Loretta Porter Violet Reich Edith Johnson Doris Costello President, ' 36 President, ' 35 Secretary Second Row Treasurer Grace Smith Francene Maxwell Elizabeth Conley Rubie Ham Pledge Captain Secretary Reporter Vice-President ■♦ 66 :- ♦♦• 1935 4Sk DE SOTO 1936 SIGMA ALPHA MU Top Row Catherine Blann Edna Brown Sarah Campbell Lucille Choate Bottom Row Peggy Davis Mary Wilma Gaulding Bertha Gibson Frances Griffin ■♦«E « 67  Eg - DE SOTO 1936 ; SIGMA ALPHA MU Louise Gwynn Top Row Marie Hansen Margaret Jones Margaret Martin Bottom Row Dorothy Stewart Bruce Ti I ley Sarah Vineyard Dorothy Whitford ■♦ « 68  ■ ♦• •Hfl  ♦• MOTHER MYNDERS •HIE 35f « 69 % : : 1935 D E SOTO 1936 SEYMOUR A. It will be distributed to the student body and is intended especially for the freshmen. The Handbook owes its beginning to Dean J. M. Smith, who, in 1934, brought the idea to the attention of the All-Students Club Council. Verney Seebode, who took an active interest in the movement, was appointed editor. He organized his staff and assembled much of the material for the book, however, completion was suspended when Mr. Seebode left school in the Spring of 1935. Virginia Allen was appointed editor of the 1936-37 Handbook at a meeting of the All-Students Club Council, and O. D. White was appointed assistant editor. The book is finished in the school colors, blue and gray. It is compiled as a practical guide and contains information of vital importance to students. It includes a resume of the year ' s activities, extensive information con- cerning the curriculum and requirements for graduation, a description of the campus, and a guide to places of interest in Memphis. Hereafter it will be published annually, during the Spring quarter, by the All-Students Club Council with the assistance of the administration. •♦■fie 100 3 FEARI IS £_ : ss_ HELEN FORD ' Miss State Teachers Collese ' Photo by Harry Gerstel •♦49 EE33f+- « 102  ss_.
