We began by selling ads. Then the work started. It was time for James and Richard to begin taking hundreds of pictures and for Sue and Mrs. Pelfrey to draw lay- outs. Terri and Wayne also pitched in and helped with various jobs. We all had to use our imagination and bright ideas throughout the year. Then DEADLINE time came. We made a few and missed a few. We burned midnight oil, mostly, and had to give to the annual plenty of our precious time, but in the end, we see it was worthwhile. Now, the time comes to see the result, the reaction of the students, and hopefully breathe a deep sigh of relief. We the staff want to thank Mrs. Pelfrey for being the sponsor of the annual. She always contributed her time and especially her thoughtfulness. Without Mrs. Pelfrey and her knowledge and imagination, we couldn't have made it. Also, we would like to thank Mrs. Tribble for her guidance throughoutthe year. 26 gA . N, Q , s.......v --.-V... --.1 9...-.f.-B. Learning that athletes do encounter defeat at one time or another the cyclonettes blocked each loss out of their minds and went on to face the future games. Enduring many hardships the Cyclonettes have at some time experienced the thrill of victory and also the agony of defeat. We all know that our Cyclonettes are truly athletes. The season was definitely getting off to a great start, and with district only a week away, the girls felt confident about winning. The girls swept district play at White Deer, with Sonja clearing all of her opponents O and 0, including her teammate Brakelle in the finals. Likewise, both girls doubles teams were destined to a chal- lenge in the finals. Beth and Stephanie took the match 6-3, 6-1 over teammates Kelli and Mary, to claim the district championship and a second trip to Regional. With the girls' complete domination of district, they were soon off to Odessa to compete in the Regional Tournament. Play got under- way on Friday with decisive wins for both Sonja and Stephanie and Beth. Unfortunately, teammates Kelli and Mary lost their first roundg but the experience of this kind of competition was good for them. Brakelle won her first match after a short struggle, but later, in her second round, she was defeated. The next day brought tougher competition for Stephanie and Beth as they had to face the I-'1 Seed of the tournament. They were defeated after a trying battle, and later played for third place, but were again defeated, therefore taking fourth place in the Region. Fortunately, Sonja had better luck. And with two quick and easy matches, she was off to state for her Fourth straight year! Sonja Hutcherson won the state title again! During her four years of competition she never lost her serve and never gave up a set to an opponent while playing a UIL district, region, or state match. Sonja will now go down in history as becoming only the fourth girl to take the state title four years straight. CONGRATULATIONS! We never could have done it without Brutus. Right Sonja? Uh-Uh-Uh Hernandez. Bottom Row: Jackie Montgomery, ' Debra Davis, and Donna Richardson. in District The MHS tennis team of 79 and 80 were unable to qualify for Region although a few members of the team captured third place in district. In boys singles Mark Simmons defeated Weese of White Deer 7-5 6-2 lost to Urban of Wellington 5-7 2-6 but defeated Ross of Panhandle for third place 7-6 6-2. Terry Foster in boys singles lost in the first Round to Bohannon of White Deer 3-6, 4-6. The boys doubles team of Quint Floyd and Adam Mejia also finished third in district. They defeated Williams and Cochran of Wellington 6-0, 6- 0, lost to Hicks and Matcalf of Panhandle 5-7, 3-6, but defeated Strawn and Cowan of Panhandle 6-1, 6-2, for third place. Most admit the 70's were not the best of times. But in the midst of it all, a brief shining hour: July 4, 1976, our nation's 200th birthday. Many memories have been lived at MHS during the '79-'80 year. We have captured the highlights of the past year and printed them on paper. With the use of our imagination, skills, and abilities, we have attempted to fulfill the precious moments lived at Memphis High. We hope you will always keep and cherish this book. We would like to express our appreciation to Mrs. Pelfrey for sponsoring the yearbook and wish her the best of luck in the future. Also we express our thanks to Mrs. Tribble for showing us the way when we were lost and for the many times she lent us a helping hand. y The 1979-80 Editors ns , VNVIIBH 70544155 KL? gr! j Qwxuwl Q 'VW M791 W M YP?
