The Warrior SENIOR EDITION -1- 1940 Page Thirty-one T CBHTRPTLT HIGH SCHOOL Golf HEN time came for the city prep golf tour- ney, it was a member of the class of '40 that showed best for the Warrior cause. As you have probably guessed, sad lad was Iimmy Wittenberg. ln team play the Central foursome tailed to place. Scootie Taliaferro was the only other Senior on the squad. Wittenberg began his march to what was to be the City title by closing out Earl Rogers 7-6. In the next three steps to the title, Wittenberg proved himself to be a match-play artist of the highest caliber, for all three of the matches were tough and close affairs. The first of these three Iimmy won over Earl Rogers l up on the 18th. lt took Wittenberg two extra holes to eliminate Iames Williams in a nip and tuck match. By the time Wit- tenberg met Gene Yow in the finals, he was ac- customed to pressure play, and had little trouble in the elimination of Yow one down on the 18th tor the City title to add to the State title he won at the Shelby Course in 1939. Track LTHOUGH the Central track team failed to retain any of the three titles they picked up in 1939, they did have some fine cindermen who were worthy of the Warrior clan. Central took part in three meets: a triangular affair, the District, the West Tennessee, and the State meet. The War- riors walked oft with the triangular meet, placed second in the District and West Tennessee, and finished out of the money in the State. The class of '40 was well represented on squad. To name a few: loe Coffman-Shot, broad jump, pole vault, and high hurdles. Best event: pole vault-fourth in State. William Sledge-Quarter mile and anchor on mile relay. Best time .55. Ray Allen--Quarter mile and mile relay. Bill Copeland-half mile and mile relay. Best time-2:11. Phil Alston-100-yard dash, 200-yard dash, high and low hurdles. Best event: low hurdles- best time-27. 55545: n 'C-is Baseball T THE time these crude words leaped from the keys of my typewriter, the Central Nine needed only one victory to put them in the play-off for the Championship. The Warriors have broken even in their four-game tussle up to date. Members of the class of '40 formed the backbone tor the team as they did so effectively for most of the other teams. Page Thirty SENIOR EDITION 21- 1940 The Warrior C M C CBNTRTXL HIGH SCHOOI. ltlugene Bledsoe, Capt, Fulton Wilkins, Kenny Holland. Elsworth Taliaferro, .laines Brown City and District Cage Champs 'HE basketball team enjoyed one of the most successful seasons in many a foul shot. Al- though the squad never met a foe on their home court, they marched to the City and District titles on foreign, with little or no trouble. Coach Murf ray built a squad with air-tight defense and an offense that couldnt be stopped, with boys that seemed to be made for the court. Messick and Tech gave the Warriors their greatest trouble. ln the City loop games with Messick, Central came through with a one-point win one time and a field goal in the Other. But it was a different story in the District when the teams met on an equally strange court-Central tripped the Panthers by a l5-point margin. In the two games with Tech, Cen- tral took one and dropped one. After winning the City Championship with only one defeat on their record, the Warriors headed for the District at Whitehaven. In the first two rounds of play Central eliminated Covington and Messick in the order named, then the going got tough. The team met the host team, Whitehaven, next. The Tigers are dangerous anywhere, but the Murray men couldn't be stopped, and they came through with another win. The final game was a breeze for the Warriors, taking Collierville and the District crown with a 60-26 victory. The quintet was tripped by Clarksburg in the first round of the West Tennessee, but they had already met and defeated everything with five men and ball in their District. The next event saw Wagner and Waddell take second and third places in the forty-yard breast stroke dash. Before the halfway point in the meet, Frank had captured second place in the two hundred and twenty yard grind. During the diving event Marty Walt showed enough form to take a third place behind two members ot the opposing team.
