Hzgh School '2 None of the students of Central High School and only a part of the faculty ' remember the complete history of C. H. S. as it was written in the early days of its ,H Existence. The C. H. S. of today, which has lived about a decade and a half, has ad a very real history. . As early as 1905 Memphis, and especially the Poplar Street School, which was Q at that time the cityis only high school, felt the need of another school. The Poplar . Street School, now known as Crockett Technical High, had as its principal Mr. Nicholas Williams. H: I Due to the efforts of Dr. E. A. Neely, the Chairman of the Buildings and 7 Grounds Committee of the Board of Education at that time, thirteen acres of ground Nl were purchased for the new school on the southeast corner of Bellevue and Linden. 6 It was here that our own Central High School, with its excellent devices for ventila- tion, sanitation, etc., was built. Everything in the school was up-to-date. There were the fully-equipped labora- V tories for the science department, the shop where boys might specialize in manual H, training, and the domestic science department for the girls. A gymnasium with the 6 most approved paraphernalia was installed in the basement, as was a cafeteria. In the , center of the building was placed our most necessary auditorium. il' ' The new Central Hi was given an excellenft faculty from the very first. Of V those who came from Poplar Street and are still with us are: Miss Mahler and Mr. f Ellis. From the efferson Street School came Miss Haszinger, Miss McGrath, Miss H 9 Margaret Rogers, Miss Thorburn and Mr. Rolfe. Professor Nicholas Williams from iPoplar Street was the first principal, and Mr. Samuel Hixon of the Jefferson Street Mi School was the assistant principal. i The formal opening of the school took place in September, 1911, although Poplar ,H Street's June Class had held its graduating exercises in the new auditorium the previous Spring. 11 . v Central Hi's first four-year class graduated in June, 1915. During the years from 1911 until 1918, Mr. Williams, Mr. Hixon, Mr. W. S. v Dugger, and Mr. E. E. Smith, held the position of principal successively. In Sep- H tember, 1918, our own Mr. Jester became principal of C. H. S. Miss Anne I. Mahler Q and Mr. R. M. Rolfe were his assistants. ' The student body had so increased by this time that an addition in the form of two H rooms were built over the shop. By 1921 the large number of students made it neces- v sary to use the Jefferson Street School as an annex and also to add to C. H. S. a portable , building containing eight class rooms. H . - F C. H. S. stands the center of education both in the athletic and academic fields. 0 In athletics, the girls' basketball team and the boys' football, basketball, baseball, and Ui track teams, are in the first rank. H! 1 Since 1918, when it Was established under the leadership of the late Col. A. S. H Frost, military training has been important among the school activities. Q That good old C. H. S. spirit pervades the academic branches also. Central fu High School, on the accredited list of schools, is known all through the South and 'S , indeed all over the country, sending out students to our best colleges and universities to reflect renown and glory upon the name of Central Hi.
