CLASS HISTORY OF THE GRADUATES OF 1948 By ALFORD XVOOD The graduates of 1948 as those of 46 and 47 began thelr voyage mto the sea of h1gh school not at Cathollc Hlgh but at the other h1gh schools of Memphls Some came from Sacred Heart some from St Thomas some from St Mary s and some from the old Cathollc Hrgh They had been caught tn thenr freshman year by Bishop Adrlans changmg of the school set up rn Memphl For those unable to recall what has happened smce then the hlstory begms On a bright day rn 1945 a group of expectant young lads were gathered together nn a long llne As they moved through the lme each was mdoctrlnated lI1t0 thc new Cathollc Hugh School for Boys Some were members of th1s same group who wxll be l1n1ng up on May 31 to recelve the1r long aw arted dlplomas Few of them realnzed what was nn store for them durmg the next three years They were ln for somethmg new' Whereas thelr teachers had been nuns now they were taught by prrests It took txme to get adjusted to th1s change but somehow lt dldnt take long for the splrlt of the place to permeate them and they set out to bulld Cathollc Hlgh 1nto THE school of Memphis It would be next to lmposslble to l1st all that thns class has done whlle members of th school The mayorrty of the semor class haye partrclpated nn some actxvxty and those who dnd not were among the enthusnastlc backers of the yartous proyects In the fxeld of sports Morxarxty Werrnch McGmn1s Slmpson Schmntt and others have made a name for themsels es wrth Moe landmg a berth on the Press Sctmltar All Memphls team thls year The Glee Club also had 1ts share of semors wlth Beck Boldreghml and Fnsher headlng the list The class as a whole has been responslble for many pronccts whlch have taken place They sponsored the school s frrst unzor Senlor Prom and concelved the ndea of selllng Chrnstmas cards to support thxs project The purchase of the Mrssal to be used IU the school chapel was brought about through contrlbu txons of therrs As sophs they along wrth the junror class have been chlefly responsnble for mamtenance of the h1gh xdeals and standards set up by Father Ellrott and the faculty In other flelds they have had thetr members take the lead When the Natlonal Honor So cnety Chapter was establxshed at Cathollc Flsher class prestdent for two years was elected as a charter member a posxtlon he has retalned throughout h1s three years here I math and scrence those two wlzards w1th ftgures johnson and Spencer have defrmtely excelled themselves The staff of the Magnet has been prloted by seseral members of the class durlng three years MOIIHIIEY MCGIHHIS B Toma Bulmansk1 Dommnonr the two Schmxtt brothers Wetrrch Herr Weber and Boldreghrnr It was the senlors who along wlth the yur ors gave the example for the sophomores and freshmen rn the crvrc and splrltual dutres of the student body rn donatlons to varlous char1t1es conduct durmg retreats the Weekly Holy Commun1on League and the stngmg on Frrday mornmgs at Mass In summatlon lf may be sald that the gradu atmg class of 1948 leay es behmd them a record of htgh school achrey ement wh1ch may well be follow ed by classes to come They as the preuous two graduatnng classes were pro neers they helped lay the foundattons for thmgs to come And a good job was done by all' ' 9 9 . 1 9 9 9 9 A ' .
