COUNTRY CLUB, DANVILLE, VIRGINIA VVe received the preceding invitation and prepared for our reunion with great anticipation. At last we eould satisfy our curiosity as to what our classmates had been doing since graduation. VVhen we arrived who should greet us at the door but Miss jane Spath, now Director of Nurses at Ole Memorial since Miss Hutchison went West For her health. While chatting with Miss Spath we spied Florence Rowland Lewis with her fourteen children. She is running a nursery of her own, it seems. Standing close by, catching the eyes of all our boy friends andfor husbands, was Sallie Richardson, still undecided about her future plans. Bettie Paxton Hester had always ravecl about uniformed men, so I see she has her MRS. degree with wings. lt must be nice down in Raleigh with all those Memorial grads. Noticed how nice Frances Anglin looks in the Navy uniform. Congratulations, Lt.! Bette VVinn and Betty I-Iarris did I-ine for themselves seems they are Director of Nurses and Superintendent of the Leaksville Hospital. Barbara French and Reva Farmer are members oi' the faculty of the Leaksvillc I-Iospital School of Nursing. lt seems that Nancy Simpson is still working in Reidsville, although a certain fellow CIamesD is trying hard to convince her that Greensboro is a better place. Rachel McCollum does not agree with all that, as she is 3-Il P.M. supervisor at Reidsville. We understand that Ursula Frazier is now in charge of O. R. at Oxford. Nice going! VVonder if Mona Ellington still corresponds with a certain New Yorker she met at N. C. State? Mildred Caldwell and her husband, Ronald, are standing in the corner trying to convince the audience that living in the Grand Canyon is fun. VVe've heard Go West, but never like that. Even Veronica Kalnasy likes Public Health Nursing in California. VVhy, we even have a nurse on horseback. Elzena Bryant in the hills of Ferrum, Virginia! Nancy Carter is having the time of her lilie in obstetrics at Geisinger Clinic in Danville, Pa. Her nearhy neighbor is Beverly Haight, who has a position with a surgeon in Peekskill, N. Y. Can you imagine! Petie I-Iudson has settled down to be a minister's wife! However, Sallie Milam is still debating between the baseball player and the coach. VVe learned that several of our classmates are still at Memorial. Mrs. Marie Atkinson Swain is working in O. R. with P. C. Smith as her assistant. Elizabeth Newman Doss and jane Collie are supervisors in O. B. How is business these days, girls? Mike Bankhead is still trying to convince Glorine Barker that her talents are needed more in Charlotte than in McGuire's Hospital. VVe are very sorry that Alma Nuckles VVoodall was unable to be with us, as she is expecting the little one she has talked so much about. Wonder if she will be in Royster Building? Maybe janet Allmond Lovell will take care of her and keep us posted. Betty Stevens seems pretty anxious to help Frank own his own service station in Raleigh, as she works with him on her hours off duty at Rex Hospital. T Yes, the evening passed all too quickly, for we were reminiscing over the three years we spent together at Ole Memorial. Remember the day we came in training? .. . 32 scared girls! The climax was reached in Microlniology class with Miss Steger. It was that week that five packed their bags and left for a quieter side of life. However, Frances Anglin broke the ice by tempting Miss S. with fried chicken gizzards through the window during class. Never forget the delightful rides and classes with Prof. Barnett at V.P.I. Our chemistry experiments were first on bubble gum. Results? Two instructors were assigned to ride with us. Come to think ol: it, the boys were not too bad either! Those first days and our first patients. VVhat about all those treatments? We thought we would never learn those tecbnics! Nancy Carter's iirst enema was to a male patient-a high enema, the chart read-so she stood on tiptoc in a chair. She got results, too! Even Miss Spath supervised. And our target practice for hypodermics. I don't think Miss Spath enjoyed it as much as we did. Linen was quite some problem in those days. Ask Reva Farmer-who will never forget how she searched for washcloths in the orderlies' dressing room. Elzena was always prompt remember the time she was two minutes late due to train tracks? Marie Atkinson was up to date on all her nursing procedures-especially foley catheters. Classes were quite hard, so new and different. Remember how Ragmop Anglin, being the religious type, wanted to know if subjective symptoms pertained to religion? And then there was Winn, who thought ecchymosis meant a run in the hoses! Seems Frazier couldn't understand why Miss Hutchison was so upset when shc told her that Chorea was a country. After all, they are fighting a war over there. We would also like to take First Aid over again. Maybe some more of us would have gotten diamond rings. Classes were NOT the only things to be upset about. That day Rachel McCollum came to class so confused after being assigned to 223, Henry X, for morning care! Even placid Simpson became upset after giving castor oil to the wrong patient. VVonder if she is still keeping up ber payments of rent to the office? We all managed to get our caps-somehow. February 'Sl marked the red-letter month as we began our hard struggle as 23 full-fledged students. This was just the beginning of all our troubles . .. new adventures lay awaiting us! Panny Newman will never forget Znd Hoor ll-7. Some sleep-walking she did. Have you ever tried taking fetal heart tones on a delivered mother? Rather interesting, as Carter found out. French will never forget the mixup in the nursery, either! Two babies with the same name were taken to wrong mothers. An ordeal, I'd say. lt took Allmond a long time to lind out that specimens in O. R. were to be sent to the lab. instead of the city incinerator, especially Dr. Byrd's. Our affiliations were most enjoyable. Long, hard classes, but never a dull moment. Barker will not soon forget those Dix Hill seclusion rooms and Dr. Buffalo just don't fit together, do they, kid? Seems as if a lot of the girls in Raleigh were pretty hard hit with Cupid's bow and arrow. Remember the golf course and airport? Zula Frazier became even more fond of square dancing after practicing on that runway. N. C. State College had quite a few thrills for us girls, too. All those men! Speaking of men, remember when Pax tried to make a big impression by falling for them the wrong way? Did you hurt your leg, Honey? Washington was just as much fun. Remodeling, interns, and lots more young doctors. Even Stevens got her picture in the Washington Post . . . just to show off the new hospital, of course. Remember Meridan Park and all the sight seeing? Barker doesn't understand to this day why she wasn't admitted to the President's tea. And that Negro Minstrel we produced! Genius was no name for these kids but we did need funds for an annual! Much fun with black faces, rehearsals with Pax yelling at usg and shaking knees the night of our great performance. Yes, it was a hard struggle, campus, classes, work, trials and laughsg but when the end came we were reluctant to separate and start our individual ways. Friendships and ties were made at Ole Memorial we'll never forget. Truly we can say these were the most memorable years of our lives. Compliments of A Friend e Sixry-two THIS IS A QUILL I O I X t R I i s A quill is made of wood. It is only 8 to 9 inches long. It doesn't seem that a quill could be very important, but it plays a vital part in the manu- facture of cloth. We use hundreds of thousands of them at Dan River in making Dan River fabrics. As yarn is spun, it is wound on the quill. The quill then fits right into the loom and the yarn is removed directly from the quill as it is woven into cloth. Lots of things may seem relatively insignificant to us at times but later -like the quill-turn out to be pretty important. For example, just one of Dan River's employees might be thought to be relatively unimportant when compared to the total of more than twelve thousand. But, every one of them has his specific job and the efficiency of the entire group depends on each individual. A chain is only as strong as its weakest link. Therefore, we give individual attention to every employee hired by Dan River and try to place him where he will be happiest and do the best job. The result is a group of employees, each doing his job Well, of which We can be justly proud.
