McKinney was born in the 'Show-Me State' near Springfield. He re- ceived his undergraduate degree in education from Southwest Missouri State College. Since then he has received his M.S. from Tulsa University and is now in the last stages of work toward his doctorate of education. He has also studied at the University of Oklahoma and Oklahoma State University. He joined Tulsa schools in 1941 after having been principal in Leonard, Okmul- gee, and Bixby. His first po- sition here was business in- structor at Central. From 1942-1944 he was civilian instructor at Oklahoma State University with the engi- neering operations school of the Air Force. He then returned to Bixby High as principal un- til his return in 1949 as science teacher at Franklin. From 1952-1955 he was on special assignment at the Education Service Center and he was assistant princi- pal at Cherokee Junior High from 1955-1958. In 1958 Monroe Junior High opened and he was named principal. He re- mained there until 1962 when he became principal at Tulsa's newest high school, Memorial. Taps III Honors Principal Mr. George A. McKinney is a man we point to with pride. A dignified, intelligent man with an abundance of warmth and humor, he has captured the respect and love of all who are associated with him. He has served Memorial faithfully and with wis- dom and patience, guided her to the heights she has attained in her short, but re- markable history. lt means very much to students to know that their principal sincerely cares about them and wants the very best for them. lf you ever have occasion to go to him with a problem, you will find genuine interest and competent assistance. His concern is shown even in his parting words, lf there's anything else l can do, please let me know. lt is therefore fitting that this yearbook, with its theme of the three phases of Me- morial life, be dedicated to the man who best exemplifies them. With gratitude and affection we dedicate Tapslllto our principal. af' 1 963 Contents SERVICE 8 Faculty 1 1 Organizations 23 SPIRIT 40 Sports 47 Student Life 71 Elite 91 SCHOLARSHIP 104 Classes 109 19 Three years ago the classes of '64 and '65 were issued a great and meaningful chal- h d d'ca- lenge. We were challenged by t e e I tion of a high school to bring out in our- selves those things which are best and most desirable in man. We were challenge to s states of honesty, iustice, and sincerity: to practice these in our everyday livesg to work for something bigger than ourselves. We were k d to strive for a unity and a belief in our- as e selves and what we stood for that defeat after d h tred honest effort could not puncture an a and petty thoughts had no part of. In her three years of existence, Memorial High School has proved to society that the dedication of that first year is still alive. She d trive for the ideal , i??'Lf'iN5555ff?5ii. ' ,'mhk fl ' r M. , - bmw x has proved her excellence in her three most important phases-Service, Spirit and Scholar- ship. It is because her life seems to be patterned in threes-three colors, three classes, three outstanding characteristics, the first three years-that we have chosen the triangle as the theme of this yearbook. The first year we developed the side of the triangle representing Spirit, the second year, Scholarship. This year with the devel- opment of Service, our triangle 'becomes complete. Memorial's first three years will always be her golden ones. Her childhood has passed. But the future is lined with silver. 965 M wx, M . 5 r W x fm Maw f 4 81 A Xi! , at , L I N , 1 2, ,.,Af, , , ' 1 my V, W, if , V 33, .f,E 4. .453 K ., l ?vva ,ma f rf ks ay 'ff 4 x ew ft, . 1 J A 21:4 'A A ixalxswwkt ,t.veY7f'f . y x 2'-.m x l-557 ' ' V .'-.5...:-3 ,,, ,ff - zaglf? ., ,5 :K , 3,15-5, ,Q . v .1 -'Z 1 Q .. ax: gm, , f,?'?,y.f-'-,Z , Q Q. 3523! , 5 524 W 'JL +-A vw-..2 Qn3fg'4f5,.3'3- J 1 fl' I w -' , x X it 6' 4. x s' 4 A , x , X rf N. ,K ,Q-Q' HMB. :g.ggE5,?yx'yMg:. :Q a f Q- N: WS.. ff , was , W Af .M -'b,,,.,.M,.,g.d,, Office: Standing: Mrs. Williams, Attendance, Mrs. Gunn, Secretary, Mrs. Shields, Mrs. Schreiber, School Nurse Clerk. Fenelon Boesche President To you, the students of Memorial Senior High School, I offer hearty congratulations. Opening a new school is a difficult task-for administra- tors, teachers, and the numerous other people involved in planning the physical plant itself and the instructional program to be offered. Such a venture also places a great responsibility on the student body-that of building whole- some school spirit, helping to set and maintain high ac- ademic standards, and developing high regard for scholastic excellence. These are important in that they are contributions toward realization of the primary purpose of public education in this country-the perpetuation of the American Way of Life. CHARLES C. MASON Superintendent of Schools December 5, 1962 This message was delivered to Memorial students in 1962 at our school dedication, setting goals for us to achieve. Now, in 1965, three years later we look back on his words with a feeling of accomplishment, knowing we have taken large strides toward the perpetuation of the Ameri- can Way of Life. Of interest to all stu- dents is Tulsa School Life, the paper published ioint- ly by the nine Tulsa high schools. The 15-member iournalism staff was re- sponsibile for Memorial's portion of the paper, which included all news and feature stories about Memorial, and the bi- weekly column, Banner Lines. At the beginning of the yeaf, the staff took a tour of the 'Education Service Center to learn how the paper is pro- duced. Four staff mem- bers attended the nation- al yearbook and journal- ism conference in Chi- cago. Memorial iournal- ists also attended meet- ings of the Tulsa Inter- scholastic Press Associa- tion, which representa- tives from all the city high schools attend. To con- clude a busy year, the staff attended the Tulsa University Press Day. The students received much experience at copy- reading and writing head- lines for stories from oth- er schools, because their sponsor, Mr. Dykes, is co- ordinator of School Life. The Laureate, Me- morial's literary an- thology, is now in its second and, as we on the staff be- lieve, its best year. There is a certain challenge to being on the staff, it has the format headaches of the yearbook and the traumatic deadlines of iournalism, plus the much harder iob of reading and judg- ing each piece of material. It was hard work but it was fun and we thank all who contributed. Sponsor: Mrs. Mary Lou Bul- loch. Coach Bob Riddle, elated over Edison defeat, happily discusses southside championship. Mr. Riddle was chosen Coach of the Week and later was selected runner-up coach of the All-City football team. lt was a sorrowful crowd that watched the last football game of the l963 season. lt was one of the first last the two original classes would an- ticipate and sorrowfully pass. But for football fans it had an meaning. With very few exceptions about to graduate. And that's how people summed in preseason opinions, a very strong a very weak line. They laughingly I even deeper our line was up our team backfield and spoke of our rookie head coach's plan to transfer some of the depth in our backfield to the line. lt looked like another fair season. Little did they know . . . Seven games had passed, and to the wonder- ment of our competitors we also had seven victor- ies. Our two hardest games were approaching, and people were beginning to wonder if our favored opponents were going to win. And two weeks later the Mighty Mites of Me- morial emerged as Magic Empire champions, the first three year school to win a conference title, and have an undefeated regular season. The week before our Regional's championship game the paper was full of articles about us and our opponents. One article gave a perfect defini- tion of our team in its headline, Mighty Mites are not running Scared. Taking advantage of a bad boot by Comet Greg Roach, in four plays Memorial was on the two and a lateral from Yaap to speedy halfback Harry Wood clinched the first payoff. The next TD came midway in the second period covering 55 yards with Yaap going over from the three. From the kickoff the Chargers marched 62 yards with Yaap going in from the one, and the final TD came early in the fourth period with Yaap capping a 51-yard surge, mostly through the air, with an end sweep from the four. This conversion was good with Wood hauling the oval. Kelley defense halts Charger onslaught. Junior Tackle a 1 5 v ! Rick Wheeler C411 surges through Edison line as Chargers 'capture Southside crown. MEMORIAL 12 SAPULPA 0 Riddle's unbeaten Chargers hung a 12-0 whitewashing onQSapulpa at Holmes Park for their seventh consecutive victory and their third Magic Empire triumph. Memorial put its first score on the board late in the first quarter on a 21- yard aerial from quarterback Bobby Yaap to Harry Wood to cap a seven-play 43 yard series. The Chargers took advantage of a fumbled punt late in the third quarter and Wood salted the give away TD scampering 16 yards to pay dirt com- pleting the four-play 33 yard drive. Wood's 53 yards rushing led Memorial's ground machine while Mike Bartlett picked up 37 and Greg Ridge made his starting debut collection 47 yards. Yaap's passing gained 151 yards on 12 completions in 18 attempts. Fullback Steve Ward bulls his way over the Scot goal line for a six point tally. Ac- companying him are five McLain defensive players. MEMORIAL 22 EDISON 0 , The revenge-minded Memorial Chargers bushwhacked Edison, 22-0, Saturday night before 2,500 rain-spat- tered fans. A charge of lightning struck iust be- fore halftime, and Memorial made its first score. They returned in the rain to tally in each of the remaining periods. Memorial's first score was set up by a 39-yard pass from Bobby Yaap to Bill Raynolds to the Edison 12. A nine-yard scamper by Rick Wheeler reached the three where two plays later Raynolds scored. The Charger defense tightened in the second half to allow the Eagles only two first downs and a total of 44 yards offense. Edison only crossed midfield once, on its last offensive effort. The last tally was set up by a 45-yard punt return by Ken Wiginton on Edison's free kick following the safety. MEMORIAL 36 McLAlN 6 The Magic Empire Conference battle, viewed by some 3,500 fans, saw Me- morial record its third straight regular season victory. The Mighty Mites were scored on for the first time this season, however. The Chargers defensive wall held McLain's ground machine to a meager 17 yards rushing but couldn't hold down the passing attack, as the Scots completed 10 of 21 for 175 yards. Me- morial gained 207 yards rushing and 100 through the air. Fullback Steve Ward tallied on runs of 2, 6, and 72 yards while Harry Wood crossed the goal line from 6 and 11 yards out. The victory got the Chargers off to a 1-0 league start. MEMORIAL 34 EAST CENTRAL O A crowd of about I,500 looked on at Webster Stadium Thursday night as the Chargers ground the Cardinals un- der with a barrage of power sweeps featuring Harry Wood, Ken Wiginton and quarterback Bobby Yaap. Memorial wasted no time in putting the game on ice, rolling up a 2l-O bulge in the first period, scoring all 34 points in the first half and sending in the reserves to play a scoreless second half. Wcod grabbed the league scoring lead with a pair of touchdowns on a nine-yard sweep and an 86-yard punt return. Yaap scored twice. In the first period he faded to pass and ran around right end from I4 yards out, then sneaked over from the one-yard line early in the second quarter for a touchdown set up by Greg Ridge's 42-yard scamper around right end. Wiginton got the Chargers off to a fast start as he scored on a I5-yard iaunt around right end with only 3:04 gone in the first period. MEMORIAL 27 HALE 6 Memorial's Mighty Mites mashed Hale, 27-6, for their fifth straight foot- ball'victory at Skelly Stadium Friday night. Bobby Yaap directed .a silky, smooth attack that saw the speedy Chargers marching 68, 20, 69, and 48 yards to touchdowns. Ward got the first tally late in the opening period, breaking from a pile- up at the line for a I4-yaizd scamper to cap a 68-yard drive in I0 plays. A fumble recovery at the Hale 20 by Memorial guard Terry Edwards set up the next score as the second quarter opened. Yaap's only pass of the first half, a teasing five-yarder to Wood in the end zone, got the touchdown. In the third quarter, the Chargers launched a 69-yard push which was cli- naxed by Wood's last-second pass off the option to end Rod Sunderland for nine yards. A pass interception by Memorial's Harold Stewart set up a 48-yard drive for the final score in the fourth quarter. Yaap plunged the last two yards on fourth down. During the game against East Central, halfback Harry Wood dives through a gaping hole to score. The Chargers went on to win 34 to O. MEMORIAL 6 WASHINGTON 6 Coach Bob Riddle's Memorial Chargers, after seven straight victories, final- ly had their record tainted by a tie Friday night. The soft-spoken gridiron tutor is not complaining although he had five starters sidelined Friday night. His shorthanded crew wallowed to a 6-6 standoff with Booker T. Washing- ton in the rain at Webster Stadium. Washington, although dominated in the second half by the Chargers and limited to a net total of I6 yards, iumped into a 6-0 lead when Delbert Wood- ard grabbed a fumble in the air and lumbered 25 yards for a touchdown. But the fellow who saved Memorial's unbeaten record was a second-string offensive fullback, Mike Bartlett. Bartlett rambled 26 yards over right tackle on the first play, dragging a half dozen Hornets with him to the 23-yard line. Then Bartlett carried seven more times, finally cracking over from less than a foot out. Kenny Wiginton sprints past the Ranger defense to gain valuable yardage as Chargers tromp over Hale, 27 to 6. nw' MEMORIAL 8 ROGERS 30 Rogers mounted Their total to 14 by the end of the first half, but Memorial promised to make a game of it by moving 50 yards in 10 plays. Sparked by substitute fullback Rick Wheeler's 21 yard scamper, the Chargers used a fourth down pass from Bobby Yaap to end Bill Ray- nolds to get their tally. Yaap sprinted around the end on key blocks by Pat Jones and Norman Baxter to score the two points and narrow the gap, 14-8. Memorial was unable to score again and the game ended 30-8. Just in their third season, the Chargers produced a sparkling 8-1-1 record. Quarterback Bobby Yaap sprints past Central defense to pick up valuable yardage in Memorial's 14 to 0 victory over the Braves. MEMORIAL 14 CENTRAL 0 Memorial's alert Chargers converted two Central fumbles into touchdowns to outlast the Braves, 14-0, in a defensive football strug- gle at Skelly Stadium. Quarterback Bobby Yaap passed for both of the first half scores. He connected on a 41-yard bomb to halfback Harry Wood for the first tally. In the second period he threaded a four-yard aerial to end Rod Sunderland in the end zone. Wood kicked both extra points. Central never crossed midfield in the first half. In the third period Terry Parsons recovered a fumble at the Charger 19, but the promising threat failed on downs. 9.4 Kenny Wiginton smashes through Ropers line only to be brought down by their secondary. MEMORIAL 16 WEBSTER 6 Atter dominating the game for three quarters, Tulsa Memorial threw a stubborn defense at the threatening Webster Warriors and held on for a 16-6 victory and the Magic Empire football champion- ship before 4,000 fans at Webster Stadium. ln the closing five minutes the Charger defense came up with a goal line stand and in the last half-minute added two points on a safety when an over- anxious Warrior tried to field a punt at his goal line. Memorial, win- ning its first football crown since the school opened three years ago, evened its three-year series with the Warriors at 1-1-1. Bobby Yaap and Ken Wiginton added nine on the run-pitch option to get to the 15 and three plays later Wiginton scored from the 10 on a double reverse. He booted the placement for a 7-0 lead with 30 seconds left in the first quarter. Memorial opened the second half with im- proved domination driving 60 yards in 10 plays for a 14-0 lead. Yaap spiced the surge with a pass to end Bill Raynolds covering 29 yards. Yaap sneaked the final four yards on three plays and Wigin- ton, who left with an injury in the second period, came back to add the conversion kick. Cauchon and Warwick find if hard to believe Joan's siory. Although the tales of Joan of Arc are old, the artistic endeavor of the contemporary French playwright, Jean Anouilh, creates for us a memorable and rewarding ex- perience in The Lark . From the first moment Joan hears her voice till the last words she cries as she is tied to the stake, there is a courage and strength in her love for France. Joan's trial proves to be interesting as Church and State question her benevolent voices. Whether Joan leads the French army under the banner of God, or whether she is just another heretic, is a question left to the audience as the curtain closes. The cast and crew, essentials in a good show. Cauchon, played by David Barrett, prays for guidance in deciding Joan's fate. The Queen Mother fNancy Lovej consoles the Little Queen CGaye Clarkl. Directed by Donald Hamilton the Junior Class Play concerned a group of performers on opening night of a play in Boston. The first act consisted of a string of good luck toasts made by the author, director, and producer. After the performance and before the early morning reviews, the characters showed their disappointment feeling the entire show was a flop. But the final act was very light hearted and encouraging. The review has been good and there is hope for the production. Irene, played by Valerie Warde, praises Peter Sloane, played by Robert Walker. 1 A toast, to a little old lady... says Larry Myers. Senior Board The class of 1965 is the first to complete three years at Memorial. The standards left by the graduates of '64 were indeed difficult to meet, but this year's Seniors have come through with flying colors. Seniors started before the school year began with the annual Watermelon Feast. Here the new Char- gers met the old, including some soft-hearted graduates. The first week of school was ended by the Howdy Dance, another Senior activity. This week also in- cluded tryouts for our very successful Senior play, The Lark. With our active senior homerooms, we brought in more than a thousand dollars in ticket sales. This most difficult play was superb, the highlight of our senior year. In early October our class selected the finalists for Miss Memorial II. Needless to say, our choices were excellent. By the beginning of the second quarter, our class had begun work on our Senior activities. Commit- tees were formed, chairmen chosen, and meetings began. With much hustle and bustle, and a lot of extra time we started preparing for our Senior week. Because of the success of our Junior Carnival, we decided to sponsor one again in April of our Senior year. With our Backward Dance, and a lot of other activities, our class completed its three most memorable years, when in May of 1965 the first class to go all the way through Memorial High School, graduated.
