Smiley Clipped, 83-36 Finding they. were no match for the Mustangs, the Eagles from Smiley High School went very cold from the first quarter on and were trounced, 83-36. The Ponies, led by the Rustler unit throughout most of the game, revitalized the defense that The 1965 Rustler starting five. (Poythress, Hamner, Jacoby, had seemed to leave them in the past few games. Armstrong, and Carter.) The question was not if the Eagles could win, but if they could make over 40 points. They didn’t. Spring Woods Held, 82-29 For a high school to score over 100 points is really something. But for a team to score very high and hold their opponents very low is quite a feat. The Memorial Mustangs proved they could score 100 points five times in 1965. They also | held their opponents to less than 50 points ten | times. The record was set for all time agains Spring Woods on February 8, when the Ponies rolled over the Tigers, 82-29. Spring Branch Folds, 75-55 In what proved to be the district championship game, Memorial deftly downed the Spring Branch Bears for the second time this year, 75-55. It marked the fourth straight victory over the Bears in two years. Kent Taylor scored 19 for the Ponies and Jerry Kroll netted 18. — The win brought the Mustangs district record to a perfect 12-0 mark, and sent them into Bi- District competition for the second straight year. Northshore Decked, 100-68 Fighting hard but losing to a far superior team, the Mustangs of Northshore continued in their losing ways with a 100-68 Memorial win. Steve Jacoby, Neill Armstrong, Roland Carter, Dick Hamner, Paul Poythress, and Vernon Cross stood out. E South Houston Fights, 66-60 Kent Taylor and Jerry Kroll teamed up for 36 points as the Mustangs continued to roll through district unmolested with a 66-60 win over the die-hard Trojans of South Houston. Having the home court edge, the Trojans kept the high-scoring Ponies down to reachable heights and made quite a game of the contest. With memories of their earlier plastering, South Houston played like a team that was the mistaken under- dog. Aldine Smashed, 94-57 Finding the range late in the game, the Mus- tangs failed to reach the “100” mark against Al- dine and were forced to be happy with a 94-57 win. Mike Millegan paced the Ponies with a tre- mendous first half scoring rampage and wound up with 21 points for the night. Finding it hard to play Aldine and the referees, Millegan fouled yt in the fourth quarter along with teammate Jerry Kroll who was contained to only 11 points.
