Northshore Bopped, 101-47 Six Mustangs hit in double figures as Memorial opened its third year of district play with a 101- 47 victory over the Northshore Mustangs at North- shore. All-state candidate Jerry Kroll led the team with an impressive 29 points against the ine ffective Mustangs from Galena Park. This win marked the eleventh straight victory in 10-4A play, carrying over from last year. GE wo a ee Dick Hamner (31) puts in two at Northshore. Trojans Bow, 103-80 Memorial did the impossible by scoring over 100 points twice in a row with their 103-80 win over the South Houston Trojans. The win preserved the string of home court wins. The Mustangs have yet to lose on their own floor since 1963 in a tournament. Jerry Kroll led the team in scoring once again with 29 points. Aldine Crossed, 87-45 Memorial entertained the Aldine Mustangs on January 8, and with the help of Kent Taylor and Vernon Cross, whitewashed the visitors, 87-45. Taylor hit 18 points, mostly from the outside, the shot he is most noted for, and Vernon Cross © aided the defensive cause. Cross also put the ball through the hoop from half-court just as the final buzzer sounded, a feat that will be remem- bered by all who saw it. Ponies 1 x a Bob Bramlette (10) puts in two points in Spring Branch tourney. San Antonio Tournament San Antonio area high schools felt the power of the Mus- tangs, as they romped over highly rated prep teams for their sec- ond straight tourney crown. Wins included games over Alamo Heights, 75-50, Mar- shall 76-52, and fa- vored Central Catholic, 87-67. Jerry Kroll, Mike Millegan, and Kent Taylor made all- tournament. Contemplation. Jacoby. 272 Cop Two Tourney Crowns Spring Branch Tournament Memorial captured the ninth annual Spring Branch tournament by rolling over Davis 87-66, Northshore 102-52, Westbury 67-50, and Waltrip 71-69, in suc- cessive games. Jerry Kroll gained all- tournament honors for the second straight year by net- ting 68 points in the four games. Jerry Kroll (42) hits for two against Davis, while Roland Carter (54) follows up. Houston Jaycee Unsuccessful for the first time in 1964-65 tournament play, the Mustangs were upset in ‘their second outing by Robert E. Lee of Houston, 50-48. In the first game against Brazosport, the Ponies ran over the Exporters, 71-60, with Jerry Kroll netting 30 points.

Determined Kroll up a determined defense and fouled up the Bears Kroll takes a Bear rebound. Bramlette (11), Eagles Plucked, 101-44 Returning to three figures, Memorial walloped the Smi- ley Eagles, 101-44 at Smiley. It marked the third game in district play that the Mustangs have rounded up more than 100 points, the fourth time for the season. Jerry Kroll led the fast-breaking Mustangs with 22 points to his credit. Following this game, the Ponies stood 4-0 in district play. Tigers Bounce, 84-44 Spring Woods challenged the Mustangs for the first time in history on January 19, 1965, and fell very hard, 84-44, The game took place in the Memorial gym, where no defeat befell the Mustangs in 1965. Jerry Kroll sparked the team with 28 points. Bears Fall, 52-36 January 22 marked the day that Memorial moved into first place alone. Previously they were tied with Spring Branch, who was also undefeated. The Mustangs mustered ‘ “slow down” game. The final score was 52-36. Memorial made 18 of 18 free throws in the game and Kent Taylor popped in 17 points for Pony scoring honors. This game was a milestone for the Mustangs in 1965. |
