Memorial Bops Smiley in 31-6 Offensive Show Memorial boosted their season record to 5-1 with a 31-6 district victory over the visi t- ing Smiley Eagles. In the first quarter, Larry Alford passed to | Dick Flynn for 30 yards and a touchdown. Center Gary Abbott set up the next Mustang touchdown by recovering a Smiley fumble on the Eagle 43. Eight plays later, Alford hit end Steve Prichard with a 16 yard touchdown pass. Harry Van Wagner scored the third Mus- tang TD from three yards out in the second quarter. In the fourth quarter, Glenn Shahan scored from six yards away. With two minutes left, Roland Carter, who had placed four extra points through the up- rights prior, added a 35 yard field goal. Roland Carter (12) and Jim Boni (74) close in to nail a South Houston runner. Safety Spells Difference; South Houston 8, Memorial 6 Andy Erwin (66) and Gary Crum (86) lead the Mustangs back to action at South Houston. The first defeat of the year came at South Houston, as the home team Trojans bounced the Mus- tangs, 8-6, in the year’s first dis- trict battle. The only score of the first half came when a snap from the center sailed over punter George Mea- dor’s head and resulted in a safety for South Houston. In the second half, leading 2-0, the Trojans cashed in on a Memor- ial fumble and scored from 19 yards out on a pass. The try for two points failed and South Hous- ton led, 8-0. Glenn Shahan gave,Memorial a chance when he returned a punt 60 yards for a TD with four min- utes left. Trailing 8-6, the try for two points failed and the Mus- tangs felt their first defeat.

District 10 4-A’s Most Valuable lineman Leland Winston (70) puts pressure on the Spring Woods QB. Jeff Sands (85) and Ken Pearson (87) are in hot pursuit. Homecoming Sweet as Memorial Rolls Over Spring Woods, 28-0 The third annual homecoming game ended on a sweet note as Memorial romped new neighbor Spring Woods, 28-0, in the initial encounter of the two schools. The Ponies started to roll in the first period as Glenn Shahan romped through the Tiger line for 24 yards and a TD. In the third quar- ter, Shahan capped a 64 yard drive and scored from 11 yards out. Roland Carter tossed a 43 yard TD pass to Mike Regitz as the quarter ended. In the fourth, Steve Prichard blocked an attempted Spring Woods field goal and Harry Van Wagner sprinted 53 yards with the loose pigskin for the final Mustang score.
