Ted Carey (40) lays a key block for Mike Regitz (32) at Lufkin. Mustangs Trap Panthers, 21-7 On the first play from scrimmage, the Lufkin quar- terback romped 54 yards for a TD. It seemed like it was going to be a long night, but the Mustangs fought back behind the passing of Larry Alford and whipped the Panthers, 21-7. Alford hit Mike Regitz with a scoring pass just as the half ended. In the third quarter, Alford scored from one yard out and in the final minutes Nick Ware grabbed a pitchout and scored from ten yards out. Roland Carter converted after each tally. Taking a Mustang bounce, a Luf- kin runner finds his way back to earth via Headhunter Harry Van Wagner (42) while Ponies Jim Boni (74) and Don Robinson (53) rush to assist. The Lufkin QB is smothered by Leland Winston (70) and Don Robinson (53).

Alford passes as Al Boisvert moves in for a key block. Mike Regitz takes an Alford pass and a McAllen Bulldog. Ponies Post 28-6 Win Over McAllen Bulldogs Memorial’s offense shined in the year’s first home game to give the Ponies a 28-6 win over the tough McAllen Bulldogs. The Mustangs jumped to an early 14-0 lead in the first quarter due to McAllen fumbles. Glenn Shahan scored first from six yards out and Nicky Ware hit paydirt after a 12 yard gallop. Shahan scored again from seven yards out in the third quarter, and Alford scored from one yard out in the fourth. Roland Carter added all four extra points. Richard Garay was a standout on defense as he set up a Memorial TD, recovering a fumble on the McAllen 19. Glenn Shahan breaks loose for seven yards against McAllen.

Safety Spells Difference; South Houston 8, Memorial 6 Andy Erwin (66) and Gary Crum (86) lead the Mustangs back to action at South Houston. The first defeat of the year came at South Houston, as the home team Trojans bounced the Mus- tangs, 8-6, in the year’s first dis- trict battle. The only score of the first half came when a snap from the center sailed over punter George Mea- dor’s head and resulted in a safety for South Houston. In the second half, leading 2-0, the Trojans cashed in on a Memor- ial fumble and scored from 19 yards out on a pass. The try for two points failed and South Hous- ton led, 8-0. Glenn Shahan gave,Memorial a chance when he returned a punt 60 yards for a TD with four min- utes left. Trailing 8-6, the try for two points failed and the Mus- tangs felt their first defeat.
