CHARLES YUST Journalism After three years of experience in the various phases of yearbook work, including editing last year’s supple- ment, Charles (right) was selected editor of the Reata for 1965. He feels that the yearbook was ” a big re- sponsibility, the biggest | ever tackled.” Although it required much time and concentrated effort to meet deadlines and maintain a smoothly running organization, Charles still managed to pursue his interests—photogra- phy and reading—and to participate in the Wranglers and Quill and Scroll. Charles plans to enter either Duke University or the University of Texas next: fall, and hopes to become a surgeon after college and medical school. SHARON CHEADLE Orchestra Sharon, (left), the “concert mistress” of both the Memorial and the All-District orchestra, has studied violin for eight years. Her belief that ‘music has given a chance for leadership’ was upheld by her selection for All-State orchestra this year. She has been a member of the All-City orchestra for the past three years, and last year won an orchestra award at Memorial. In addition, she has earned awards in his- tory, English, and biology. Aside from spending four nights a week studying violin, Sharon also plays the guitar and is a member of SAPS, Mu Alpha Theta, and Sigma Gamma. Sharon will attend the University of Oklahoma, major in music and biology, and plans to go into research science or music education. — LINDA SEIBERLING Spanish An outstanding Spanish student, Linda (left) “loves it” because “ the language is interesting’ and “the Spanish culture is an exciting one.” She is a member of the Spanish Club and Sigma Gamma, and in her church group, the Lutheran League, which she has served as secretary-treas- urer for the past two years. Linda finds relaxation and en- joyment in every kind of music, especially piano. Plans for becoming a Spanish teacher will be furthered at Stephen F. Austin or Texas Lutheran College.

248 JOE LASSITER Student Government As president of the Student Council, Joe considers his job to be “interesting work in which a lot of people are involved” and finds that “working out a general plan acceptable to all is extremely difficult.” Joe’s asso- ciation with people extends to participation in the German Club, SAPS, Mu Alpha Theta, Key Club, and his church youth group, of which he is president. Among the honors bestowed on him were being named Junior Rotarian for the month of September and re- ceiving a National Merit Letter of Commendation. Active in sports, Joe has won two PE awards. He likes to play basketball, skin dive, sail, and swim. Joe works in the office of Naval Research during the summer and plans to work toward a doctorate in ocean- ography. MIKE WITHROW Choir As a polished baritone in the Harmonaires and Chor- ale for two years, and a member of the Choir five years, Mike (left) has spent many enjoyable hours singing. His participation in musical groups extends beyond those at school, however, since he is also a member of his church youth choir. In his spare, Mike raises pedigreed show rabbits. Mike, who plans to attend Stephen F. Austin State College next year, will probably major in business ad- ministration with hopes of owning his own business in the future.

ALAN SPARER Speech An articulate spokesman for the advantages of the speech program at Memorial, Alan (left) exemplifies the benefits to be derived from participation. He feels that “debate and speech do a great deal for the indi- vidual, especially teenagers. Most people | know who are active in speech are extremely well-rounded, with broader general interests, and these people tend to ex- cell in many fields.” Alan, who is frequently in demand as a guest speak- er, is also Southwest Regional president of the youth group in his synagogue. He hopes to go to college in the East and is considering studying law and entering politics in the future. LINDA TAPSAK Speech Linda (right) is well-known at Memorial for her work in speech, a program in which she has participated for five years. She particularly enjoys debate, and last year placed second in persuasive speaking at the state tourna- ment in Dallas. Linda is active in the French Club and- Mu. Alpha Theta, and serves as secretary for the Student Council, National Forensic League, and National Honor Society. She enjoys playing the piano, preferably classi- cal music. Although her plans for college are indefinite, she someday hopes to become a teacher. KENT TAYLOR Athletics As a result of his ability and interest, Kent, (left), who frequently practices three hours a day, scores high with his coaches as well as on the basketball court. His skill at this game of “fast moving action” led to his be- ing named to the San Antonio all-tournament team and the All-District team this year. , Although basketball highlights his activities and has claimed a large percentage of his time since seventh grade, Kent also participates in the Key Club, Wranglers, National Honor Society, Student Council and Harmon- aires. He will enter college in the fall as a pre-med student, with plans to become a surgeon. a ee WN ger
