246 JOHN MANSFIELD Drama Talent, time and interest devoted to many different aspects of drama have brought John (left) much de- served recognition. These efforts have played an im- portant role in John’s winning numerous honors. In tournaments, his versatility is evidenced by the fact that he has placed first in many events such as duet acting, dramatic and poetry interpretation. An active member of Thespians, John has a very enthusiastic attitude toward drama. When not preparing for a tournament, he likes to play football, hunt, fish, and spend time at his family’s ranch. THOMAS JELSON Scholarship An outstanding student during his four years of high school, Tom (right) has found that “the teachers take an active interest in their students” and “give help when it is needed.” His outside interests include all sports, especially basketball and horseback riding. Tom is a member of the National Honor Society, SAPS and Mu Alpha Theta, and plans to attend either Rice University or Georgia Tech, where he probably will study engineering. AGNETA THORNQUIST Art The first foreign student to be chosen as a “Senior of Distinction,” Agneta (left) has literally displayed her talent for art. She has combined her special interest in fashion drawing with another hobby—sewing—and says she finds abstract art equally enjoyable. At home in Sweden, one of her favorite pastimes is skiing. She also spends leisure hours at sketching and even more time on her painting. She will return to Sweden in June, and plans to attend a sewing and art school there.

CLINTON DUNN Band Clinton, (right) played the trombone for six years, and his hard work and long hours of practice have paid off. Participating in both the band, in which he is first chair trombonist, and in the school orchestra, Clinton's ability gave him a seat in the All-District orchestra this year. He feels that playing a musical instrument “gives a person an opportunity to learn discipline, which is valuable throughout life.” Besides music, Clinton enjoys water skiing, sailing and fish- ing. Next fall, Clinton will enter TCU where his major probably wil! be dentistry. FRAN CRAWFORD Scholarship As an outstanding student. throughout her four years of high school, Fran (left) has been selected on the basis of her scholastic achievement, as one of four seniors tied for scholarship honors. Fran’s list of accomplishments include being one of the honor winners of the Westinghouse Scholarship contest, as well as being selected for membership in SAPS, the National Honor Society and Mu Alpha Theta. Fran feels her years at Memorial have been “extremely rewarding ones,” from which she has gained “the incentive to go on to college.” She will attend Texas University and tentatively plans to become a teacher. piece CHARLES STRICKLIN Journalism Last fall, Charles (left) joined the staff of the Anvil, and immediately proved his ability by being chosen business manager for the first semester and editor for the second. In addition, he was selected as the “most valuable staffer” by the Anvil’s sponsor, Mrs. Elaine Pritchett, in cooperation with the Houston Chronicle. Charles feels his senior year, “was the most important of my high school life,” and that the “fine staff and dedicated sponsor” helped make it possi- ble. Charles, who likes fishing and plays tennis, also devotes time to the Youth Council of his church. He hopes to attend either Baylor or Northwestern Uni- versity, as a journalism major and to enter the Peace Corps after graduation.

DAVID HARTER English Speech David (right) is one distinctly successful senior who says his accomplishments “have not involved a great deal of hard work.” He likes both English and speech, and is particularly interested in creative writing and debate. In speech tournaments, David has won numer- ous honors, and for the last two years has received awards in English. He is currently president of the Na- tional Honor Society and National Forensic League, and is a member of SAPS and Mu Alpha Theta. David plans to attend either Harvard or Michigan State University next year and hopes to teach chemistry after completing his college work. CONNIE HALL Journalism French Connie (right) has had five years of French and one and a half years of newspaper experience, including serving this semester as an editor of the Anvil. In 1964, Connie was an American Field Service finalist, and this year was the recipient of the DAR award given annually to the “outstanding senior girl. She is active in Girl Scouts, as president of the Planning Board of the San Jacinto Council, is a member of the French Club, Student Council, American Field Service, SAPS, Mu Alpha Theta, and Quill and Scroll, and last year was secretary of her Junior Class. Besides these activities, Connie still finds time to sail. She is looking forward to her four years at SMU and a teaching career, and someday hopes to go to France.
