Through the years, larger numbers have meant greater variety ā and greater differences between classmates. The uniqueness and diversity of the class of ' 89 have made it a melting pot of individuals, all hopefully con- tributing to the class as a unit. The experiences we have shared, experiences which have shaped and changed our lives, have helped us to grow as a class, and as indi- viduals. no one knows what the future will bring, but we all know what the past has brought ā good times along with bad times. Although some will be heading off to college while others will be getting jobs or joining the military, nothing will replace our four years at MHS. Good Luck! 50 51 A European Alison Powers and her family. I spent the best six months of my life in the Netherlands as an exchange student. While there I traveled a lot through Holland, and learned to love a culture and a people with a rich history. The Dutch are very proud people. They take pride in their country, their government, and their traditions. Eve- rywhere I went there were friendly people. The favorite pastime of the Dutch is to relax and drink coffee until sunset. The Dutch excel in soccer,- they won the European Champion- ship while I was there. I lived in Wageningen, which is one of the oldest cities in Holland. There, bikes were our transportation in any kind of weather. At school my courses were similar to the ones I had had here. While in Wageningen I made a lot of friends, and we shared many good times. My host family helped me to understand and to love the Dutch way of life. I love my entire Dutch family dearly, and am thankful for many won- derful moments with them. Holland was an experience I ' ll treasure for- ever. . . . Alison Powers 60 Experience In the second semester of my junior year I left the United States to become an exchange student in France. I stayed with the Bievre family, who were young and middle class and had two sons ā Cedric, age eight, and Mich- olas, age six. I lived in the city of Chalon sur Sa6ne, which is located on the Saone River, about six hours from Paris by car. The city was about the size of Brockton, and had approximately 60,000 residents. I attended a small pri- vate school in the city; it had only about 400 students. Because it was so small, the school was easy to adjust to. During my stay I went skiing a couple of times in the French Alps, and visited the countries of Italy and Germany. I really enjoyed learning about the French culture and way of life, and I ' ll always remember my experience there. . . . LYNCH Superintendent of Schools Dear Class of 1989: 1 firmly believe that you, the future leadership of our Town, State, Nation and the World are the best and brightest hope of fulfilling our dreams for the future. Our dreams are inseparable. I am convinced that you who have worked and achieved here at M.H.S. are as well or better prepared to meet the challenges of the future than were we who preceded you. Trust in yourself and God and avoid evil. Honor and love your Father and Mother, brothers and sisters as the best friends you will ever have. Be true to yourself, your friends and your Country. These are not antiquated precepts from a bygone era. These, 1 believe, are the ingredients of a happy and successful life and a rewarding and fulfilling future. God bless you, each and every one as you journey toward the fulfillment of your dreams. Lincoln D. Lynch, D.Ed. Superintendent of Schools It was in 1968 that Dr. Lynch began his tenure as Superintendent of the Middleborough School Sys- tem. This June, after 21 years at the helm, he will retire to begin a new phase of his life. Our best wishes go with him; he will be greatly missed. Dear Graduating Seniors, As I think back to the beginning of this school year, I am reminded of our opening school assembly with seniors. At that time I stressed to you the impact that a senior class can have on its high school. The lead- ership the senior class chooses to demonstrate often times sets the tone for the entire school ' s success or lack of success. During 1988-89 we have seen numerous individ- uals from your class carry out this challenge in the classroom, at extra curricular endeavors and out in the community with excellent achievements both in- dividually and collectively. We are proud of what your class has accomplished. As you leave Middleborough High School and go your separate ways, I hope you will not hesitate to return and share your success as well as your failures with your former teachers and administrators. We hope that you feel we have had a small impact on your lives and that we will always be concerned, interested and above all, supportive. Best of luck in your future endeavors. Sincerely, MR. The Middleboro High School Boys ' Soccer Team faced a lot of ad- versity during the 1988 season. With only five seniors on the varsity squad, injuries and oth- er conflicts shadowed the young Sachems. At times the team was out- manned by its oppo- nents, but it still fought hard to make each con- test closer. Mext year the varsity squad will be stronger due to more experienced players who will have a few years under their belts. M.H.S. can count on a strong showing in the South Shore League next year. Of course there are cheers to learn, some of which are long and wordy while others, chants, are short and easy for the crowd to follow. The Middleborough High School Boys ' Swim Team had yet another successful season with a record of 7 wins and 3 losses this year. Under the direction of new head coach Everett Clark the team accomplished this admirable record, despite the fact that at the start of the season the Burkland Pool was inoperative and practices were held at Apponequet ' s indoor pool. Everyone truly grew to love the bus! Chaperones included the O ' Briens, Denises, Ferrys, and Eastmans. As the old saying goes, A great time was had by all! 169 BURKLAND On August 8, 1988, fire destroyed the Bur- kland School here in Middleboro. Originally built in 1955, Burkland served as a junior high until 1971 when it became home to the com- munity ' s fifth and sixth graders. A new addition which included a library and media center joined it to the Mayflower School. Though the entire new addition was saved, 22 rooms, in- cluding the auditorium, gymnasium, cafeteria, computer room, art room, music room, and numerous class rooms, were destroyed.
