Student life here at Middleboro High is comprised of many experiences — many building blocks — which have helped us to grow as a class, and as individuals. One of the most memorable of these experiences oc- curred at the end of our junior year, when the Class of 1988 journied to Washington, D.C. 7 Since our birth various experiences have shaped and influenced our Uves. Our parents have taught us to walk, to talk and to reach out to others. Our teachers have provided us with education and support, while our friends have given us the freedom to learn about others, and about ourselves. Through the years we have come to a greater awareness of who we are and of what we hope to accomplish with our lives. Our decisions for the future have to a great degree been formed and influenced by those people and those experiences we ' ve shared. One after another these people and these experiences have shaped us into the people we are today, and have given us direction for what we hope to become tomorrow. Building blocks are a wonderful representation of our journey to fulfill our dreams. They build on one another, as we have done, and together they reach their goal. Together, as the Class of 1988, our first challenge has been met. We go on now to even greater ones, knowing the support and the caring that has brought us to this point will continue through the years ahead. Thespians Tour Britain During April vacation of last year, the Speech and Theatre Workshop sponsored a Curtaintime Tour to London. Students enjoyed joining the crowds at Buckingham Palace for the chang- ing of the guard, touring Shakespeare ' s birthplace, walking through the halls of Oxford, viewing Stonehenge, and attending plays in London ' s fabulous theatre district. Everyone had such fun and learned so much that the workshop hopes to continue offering such trips. Francophiles Sojourn in Paris Last year sixteen students from Level III and IV French classes toured Paris during Easter vacation. The nine-day sojourn was a grov ing experience for everyone. We walked (and ran) our feet off and saw all the major sights of the City of Lights. Included in these were Versailles, the Louvre, the Arch of Triumph, the Eiffel Tower, Napoleon ' s tomb, and the new Museum of Impressionism. We even attended Easter Mass at Notre Dame. Fabulous weather allowed us to enjoy outdoor cafes and picnics in the park. The trip was enjoyed by all, and will remain in our memories for many years to come. Liz, Tina Study Abroad Tina Paoella and Liz Ellis shared the opportunity to live and learn jroad during their junior year. Tina was in India, where she attended chool and became almost fluent in the language. Liz ' s year was spent n Brazil, where her friends and host family and school also gave her an xcellent command of the language. Both girls traveled widely, and ■njoyed many priceless experiences. It was a wonderful year! Tina at the Taj Mahal. The Video Tech Class, now in its second year, deals with the audio-visual aspect of this communication, providing programs for the school and the community at large. Monthly the Journalism Class publishes the Sachem Sentry, which incor- porates work from the group it- self as well as writing from stu- dents throughout the school. The Timaron Staff oversees the planning, layout, mechanics, photography, and production of the yearbook. To learn more about our fellow students, our school, our community, and our- selves is the goal of each of these groups. Gina McLaughlin, business manager. ' The Speech and Theatre Workshop was established in 1978 for the purpose of giving talented students an opportu- nity to participate in the pro- duction and performance of plays from the great treasure of world theatre. Approxi- mately one hundred fifty stu- dents join the workshop each year and are exposed to the areas of mime, improvisation, and technical theater. Field trips are sponsored to region- al college and professional theatre as well as to the an- nual New England Theater Conference. The group is self- supporting and one of the most active at Middleborough High School. There has never been anything like that in our family. 90 SENIOR SPEECH AND THEATRE First row: A. Colby, J. As far as possible without surrender, be on good terms with all persons . . . Take kindly the counsel of the years, gracefully surrendering the things of youth. Nurture strength of spirit to shield you in sudden misfortune. But do not distress yourself with imaginings. Many fears are born of fatigue and loneliness. Beyond a wholesome discipline, be gentle with yourself. You are a child of the universe, no less than the trees and the stars; you have a right to be here. And whether or not it is clear to you, no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should. Therefore be at peace with God, whatever you conceive Him to be. And whatever your labors and aspirations, in the noisy confusion of life keep peace with your soul. With all it sham, drudgery and broken dreams, it is still a beautiful world. Be cheerful. Strive to be happy. Max Ehrmann
