Text from Pages 1 - 200 of the 1984 volume:

Excitement was in the air. Busses filled with the team, cheerleaders, band, and hundreds of loyal fans travelled to Nickerson Field at Boston University. December 3 was a day of destiny for MHS. The fans of Middleborough showed their enthusiasm and support for our great team as they filled the stands, far outnumbering Westwood ' s contingent. The feeling of excitement soared as our offense scored two touchdowns in the first quarter and our defense held Westwood scoreless during the first half. Our team proved its superiority ' in ever ' aspect of the game as it held a decisi. ' e lead throughout the game. The performance of the game ' s MVPs, Scoit MacNayr and Mark Johnson, showcased the unsurpassable talent of our team. Just as during the whole season, the depth of talent was the key to 3ur3 victory ' . Even the reserves, when taking the field, easily attained first downs. s time ran out, ihe score was 28-6 and the Sachems had won their third Superbowl in tour attempts over the ten year history of the event. The day ended with excited participants marching through town, exhibiting pride that our Football team is the best! Yearbook Dedication Joe Callahan For fourteen seasons, MHS Football has been synonymous with Joe Callahan. Our highly acclaimed Head Football Coach has led the Sachems to three Superbowl victories, 4 League titles and 12 winning seasons. But more than that, he has developed competitiveness sportsmanship, and the desire to do well in his players. We thank Joe Callahan for all he has provided, both for his teams and for all of us. We are proud that he is part of MHS and sorry he is stepping down. It is out of respect and admiration for his hard work and accomplishments that we proudly dedicate the 1984 Timaron to Joe Callahan. LYNCH Superintendent of Schools I wish I were a song, a song so fully joy Its melody would sound from Pole to Pole So lift the burden from each aching heart And comfort every sad bewildered soul. I wish I were a poem, to be read In every land where human speech is heard. An epic of such grand heroic strength That youth to nobler living would be stirred. Life is a song, a poem if we will but make it so Whether it reaches many or but a few who knows. Though it be sad or joyous Filled with delight or tears Still shall its joyous message echo through the years. WILLIAM S. These records consist of accurate records of all expenses, losses, profits, and a short stor ' that ties in our project activities with our goals, profits, loss, achievements and community ' service. Once judged at the county level, the top records go to the state level competition. Then the top persons record of each project is selected to attend the National 4-H Club Congress. We toured the city seeing many attractions such as the Sears Tower, Chicago Tribune and the Wrigley Building. Several banquets and award ceremonies were scheduled throughout the week. Several well known people such as Orville Redenboker (a 4-H alumni). Secretary of Agriculture john Block and Miss America Vanessa Williams attended some of our banquets. Another purpose of the program is to provide the career student with basic job skills compatible with his abilities and interests and offer incentive to the student to further his education. 67 Jon Nelson Gains Prestige And Recognition Through His Trumpet Playing For Jon Nelson, Class of ' 84, his trumpet has been a ticket to see the world. Jon ' s ability to skillfully perform has rewarded him with many prestigious honors. Throughout high school he has participated in music festivals such as SEMSBA, District, and All-State, and he was named Principal Trumpet in the 1984 All-State Band. For two summers Jon studied at Tanglewood, receiving college-level instruction from members of the Boston Symphony Orchestra. In his senior year he was fortunate enough to be selected to join the Massachusetts Youth Wind Ensemble, which is comprised of outstanding musicians from the Boston area. Last year, Jon was instrumental in the formation of the Capitol Brass Quintet. The quintet has performed throughout Massachusetts, received government grants promoting the arts, and was featured on Channel 5 from Boston ' s Cathedral of the Holy Cross. Also a member of the Youth Chamber Orchestra, Jon recently received an invitation to tour Poland, East Germany, and Austria as a soloist for three weeks following graduation. For the most part, my musical experiences have been enjoyable as well as memorable. Many people can ' t believe the many hours I devote to music, let alone the practicing. Yes, it is hard work, but I see it as an investment in my future. Obviously, I can ' t exactly foretell my future, but I have determined my goal. That is to become a professional musician. Instruments are only tools used in expressing personal creativity, and the trumpet happens to be my tool. I can just be thankful that I was given a gift, and that it has been noticed and developed. 68 Caroline Sabalewski serves As Master Of Massachusetts State Grange Youth Association Installation as Master of the Mass State Grange Youth Leadership Association Caroline at the Grange exhibit at the Rehobeth fair Throughout high school, I have had the opportunity of becom- ing involved in the Grange. The Grange was founded after the Civil War to unite farmers at meetings and discuss farming techniques. It has grown to become an organization to benefit agriculture, home econ- omics, education, legislation and youth activities. I have had the chance to take part in many grange events. I am Master of the South Midd- leboro Grange and was elected Master of the Mass. State Grange Youth Leadership As- sociation. Through these two positions, I have been able to conduct my local grange meet- Caroline at a youth church service which she arranged ings as well as youth meetings around the state. Some of my accomplishments include: planting trees in parks throughout Massachusetts, running field days, conducting a youth church service and displaying exhibits at various agricultural and commercial fairs. I was named Outstanding Girl in 1981 for my past activities and was youth ambassador for the grange. I travelled representing the youth in different activities. At this time, I won the public speaking contest in Massachusetts and went on to win third place in the New England Youth Competition. I have had a lot of fun in the grange and have learned many new things. Grange is quite an experience and I plan to always stay involved. by Caroline Sabalewski Eastern States Exposition, Springfield, MA 69 CLASS HISTORY Upon entering Middleborough High School for the first time on September 10, 1980, the Class of 1984 was apprehensive and filled with doubt and anxiety. Overcoming our initial nervous state, we wiped out our misgivings and were readily absorbed into the flow of MHS. By October we had selected our class officers who were President Sherr ' Quindley, Vice President Lori Petrowski, Secretary Madeline Pagan, and Treasurer Ellen Teceno. Besides these four officers, our representation on the Student Council consisted of Maureen Boutin, Sarah Duggan, and Sandra Emond. The Class of 1984, however, was not the only newcomer to MHS at this time. It was late in 1980 that the doors of Middleborough High School were opened to Mr. William S. VVassel of the North Attleboro school system, who replaced out-going principal Dr. Kenneth Johnson on December 18th. The newly-arrived Class of 1984 bid Dr. Johnson a fond farewell as he departed to take on the position of Superintendent of Schools in the town of Southbridge. Although freshman year is typically a period of adjustment, it wasn ' t so for the Class of 1984 which was a participant in all arenas of activity ' at Middleborough High School. It was during freshman year that the Speech Theatre Workshop evolved into a viable school organization which presented two productions in its first year. The first, Dracula. was a great success and was followed by That ' s Entertainment, which has since become an MHS tradition. Class involvement in athletics would later result in strong stand-out teams, especially in football, field hockey, and Softball. In May of 1981, many freshmen participated in the town ' s annual Banker ' s Day program. It could safely be said that the Class of 1984 had arrived. The following academic year, the Class of 1984 returned as Sophomores on September 9. 1981. Our very able officers this year were Sherry Quindley serving as President, Kellie Moran as Vice President, Madeline Pagan as Secretary ' , and Michael McGuirk as Treasurer. These four offices were supplemented by Maureen Boutin, Lisa Carbone, and Mitchell White on the Student Council. During our Sophomore year several classmates were honored. Three members of the Class of 1984 were inducted into the Silver M Society. Michael McGuirk and Sherry Quindley were elected in the autumn of 1981, while Mitchell White was selected in the spring of the following year. We could also be proud of the nine new Sophomore members inducted into the National Honor Society. Also during Sophomore year, the Speech Theater Workshop presented The Diary of Anne Frank and more That ' s Entertainment while the Acappella Choir brought us its version of Gilbert and Sullivan ' s The Mikado. All three productions were notable achievements for those involved. The capping social function of the season was the Freshman-Sophomore Semi-Formal held in the school g -mnasium on May 7, 1982. The g m was hardly recognizable under the fine decorations. An enjoyable evening was spent by those sophomores that attended. Receiving our class rings during our Sophomore year, we looked forward to the remainder of our high school career with optimism. After surviving two years in high school at the hands of upperclassmen, the Class of 1984 would move onto their junior year and would, finally, be those upperclassmen. The junior year of the Class of 1984 proved to be an exciting prelude to Senior Year. We began our junior year on September 8, 1982 under the guidance of Sherry Quindley as President, Michael McGuirk as Vice President, Maureen Reynolds as Secretary , and Maureen Boutin as Treasurer. Serving beside the four officers as Student Council Representatives were Lisa Carbone, Sandra Emond, Randy Frazier, Michelle Larocque, Michael Maddigan, and Kellie Moran. 70 Junior year was a year of sadness and happiness. We all said good-bye to Phoebe Johnson who left us to spend her junior year in Sweden as an exchange student, but we also welcomed Jenny Thompson of Australia who came to spend a year with us in December of 1982. In the autumn Silver M assembly, Sandra Emond and Michael Maddigan were inducted, and nine more members of the Class of 1984 joined the ranks of the National Honor Society in April. Middleborough High School was ably represented by Christopher Cox and Chad Littlefield at Boy ' s State at Clark University in Worcester and Antonia Mosca at Girl ' s State at Bridgewater State College. The Acappella Choir gave a wonderful rendition of Rogers and Hammerstein ' s Oklahoma while the Speech Theater Workshop ' s productions included Arsenic and Old Lace and That ' s Entertainment. Avid participation by members of the Class of 1984 in athletics resulted in strong field hockey and Softball teams and personal victory for Hollie Lopes at the Bay State Games in Cambridge. The highlight of our junior year was, of course, our junior prom held June 10th at the Sheraton-Mansfield in Mansfield. The theme of the prom was ' We ' ve Got Tonight ' and our queen was Michelle Gerrior. Our prom was an experience that we will certainly never forget. We were finally seniors and 1984 would be our year. We eagerly awaited the start of school from Onset. We entered our final year of high school on Wednesday, September 7, 1983, as seniors. The Class of 1984 was led by President Sherry Quindley, Vice President Michael McGuirk, Secretary Michael Denson, and Treasurer Maureen Boutin. Along with our four officers, Kerri Cafferty, Sandra Emond, Deborah Griswold, Michelle Larocque, Michael Maddigan, and Laurie Perkins served as Student Council representatives. Miss Linda Walker and Mr. David White continued to ably serve as our class advisors. Other school activities have a significant effect on Senior year. One of the most important of these is the Student Council, which was led by Randy Frazier (PresidentJ, Kellie Moran (Vice PresidentJ, Lisa Carbone (Secretaryj, and Maureen Reynolds (TreasurerJ. And, what would Senior year be without a yearbook? The Timaron staff was guided by TriEditors Paul Hilton, Michelle Larocque and Mike Maddigan. Assistant and Section Editors were Anne Marie Moutinho, Donna Kahian, Joe Nieves, Sherry Quindley and Jan Ashley. The quality of Timaron 84 is evidence of the staff ' s hard work. In December of 1983, Randy Frazier and Kellie Moran were inducted into the Silver M Society, led by Pres. Sherry Quindley, VP Mike McGurik, Sec ' y Sandra Emond and Treasurer Mitchell White. Six new members joined the National Honor Society under Pres. Michael Maddigan, VP Deidre Ryan, Sec ' y Kellie Moran, and Treasurer Michelle Larocque. Our Student Government Day Representatives to the State House were Michelle Gerrior and Sherry Quindley. The class was also very proud of both Dawn Gates and Stacy Wetteland who won the right to attend the National 4-H Convention in Chicago, Illinois. The high point of the fall season was Middleborough ' s victory over Westwood in the Division IV Superbowl on December 3rd at Nickerson Field. The final score was 28-6. The coronation dance was a success, with Michelle Tetreault being chosen as queen. Along with the football team, the field hockey team had an exceptional season. The history is merely a record of the class as a whole and can preserve only the most memorable moments in the career of the Class of 1984. It has attempted to do the impossible: to capture life-long memories and set them down on paper. 71 1-1 6 ACTOR. Through Rotary International I was able to spend eleven months in Halmstad, Sweden, as an exchange student. The midnight sun and snow covered peaks were only part of such a wonderful experience. Beautiful Stockholm taught me about history, not as we think of our beginnings here in America, but the unbelievable presence of cities built during the thirteenth century. My friends taught me the traditional Christmas dances, and even how to eat as a European-fork in left hand, knife in right. I was even taken into a family, treated as a member-able to share special occasions like Midsummer and Graduation with people I could call my own. The winter months were gray and rainy, but summer was filled with travel and sunshine, certainly making up for an off-season winter. I spent the summer with friends and family, exploring Sweden a little more closely. The one sad thing about the change in seasons was that it meant my year would soon be at its end. July 27th I left Sweden behind me and another chapter in my life was complete. Now we, as Seniors, leave MHS with ambition and high 76 5,000 feet above sea level in the mountain range between Sweden and Norway hopes. Goodbyes are always difficult whether they are over long distances or just beyond your own backyard. Phoebe Johnson Phoebe at Oland in a field of wildflowers Receiving the Gold Medal at the Bay State games For Hollie Lopes, her Junior year in Track will be a lifelong memory. Always a standout in the long jump, during the 1983 season Hollie proved herself to be the best in Massachusetts. Hollie set the MHS all-time long jump records with an impressive 17 ' 5 jump and scored 185 points for the season, which broke another record. In spite of a knee injury, Hollie managed two 2nd place and one 1st place finish at the end- of-the-season events. Then it was on to the States, where Hollie took A practice jump before the competition starts HOLLIE LOPES PLACES FIRST IN LONG JUMP AT BAY STATE COMPETITION, GOES ON TO 1983 JUNIOR OLYMPICS 2nd (missing first by Vi ) and the New Englands with a disappointing 4th place finish (which was still 1 for Massachusetts). After that, it was summer season with the Taunton Track Club. In Scarborough, Maine Hollie qualified for the Junior Olympics with a jump of 18 ' 51 4 . At the Junior Olympics, Hollie was off to a good start. Then, during the finals of the triple jump, her knee gave out. Still, she earned 10th place out of 35 competitors for that trial jump. After that, Hollie recovered enough for one more meet; the Bay State Competition in August 1983. Hollie won the gold with a jump of 17 ' 4 . The future? After surgery, Hollie plans to go all the way to the high school championships and the Junior Olympics. Most of us were glad to move on to Sophomore year, even though we were still considered underclassmen — we at least knew our way around. But, we were still saying I can ' t wait until I ' m a senior!! Then we moved on to Junior year — we were now upperclassmen. The anticipation of our big event, the Junior Prom, had everyone excited. Senior year seemed so close but yet so far away . . . Suddenly, the year 1984 (yeah!) was upon us. The responsibility of being a model for the incoming little freshmen was placed upon our shoulders. Sheraton - Mansfield June 10, 1983 95 96 ANOTHER YEAR OF THE This was a very good year for the Sachems. We went 9-1 for the South Shore League championship, won the Superbovvl, and excelled in every conceivable way. Offense was unstoppable because of the backfield combination of Scott Wassel (1188 yds) and Scott MacNayr (914 yds). The touchdown machines were the Great Scotts (Wassel 104 pts, MacNayr 90 pts) with Mark Goose )ohnson contributing 28 points to the cause. Ben Hampton kicked for 23 out of 32 extra points. Quarterback Stetson Atwood passed for 518 yards and 6 touchdowns. The offensive line did a great job in opening up the holes. Defense allowed only 71 points. Scott Wassel, Jack Bean, Brian Kelly, John Bones O ' Neil and everyone else stopped opponents with relative ease. Awards were plentiful. Sachem MVPs were Scott Wassel and Jack Bean. League All Stars were Keith Ryan, Jack Bean, Shawn Hogan, Mark Johnson, Randy Frazier and Scott Wassel. The Paul Callan Award went to Randy Frazier and the Joseph Antoine Award to Dennis Butler. Best Lineman Awards went to Brian Kelly - Defense and Shawn Hogan - Offense. The Best Backs were Mark Johnson - Defense and Shawn Hogan - Offense. Scott Wassel earned the Otto Graham Award for Best Student Athlete in SB Massachusetts. Thus, Football in Middleboro was the ultimate. We all worked hard and everything seemed to come together. As the season progressed so did the total in the win column; the idea of a tournament was within reach. Speaking as Seniors, we knew this was our last chance and each game had to end with us on top. It finally happened with a victory over Norwell on October 24th; we qualified for the tourney. For the second year in a row Middleboro was a tournament contender. We ended the regular season 13-3-2 and eagerly looked toward tourney. The first team we faced on our ladder to the top was Sandwich. The pressure of tournament play was intense, a single loss would end our entire season and we knew it was All or nothing, now or never! With this thought we went on the field determined and came off the field 1-0 winners. The thrill of victory was overwhelming; we were the first MHS Field Hockey team to advance to the quarter finals. Our next opponent was Dartmouth, the number two team in the division. We gave 100 ' ' r but it wasn ' t enough; we lost 0-1. Although this was a letdown, we were proud of our achievements. Four players were selected for the AllStar Team: MVP Jean Driscoll, Patty Scudder, Karen Jewell and League-leading scorer MVP Maureen Reynolds. The season was certainly one to remember. For whom, you might ask: for the MHS Soccer team, in a game against Whitman Hanson. Since 1978, the MHS Soccer team had not experienced victory. It was as if some expected the team to lose. That bothered the squad. A hard working group with a great deal of respect for themselves and for their coach, Mike Perry, it was determined to prove the image incorrect. After a pep talk, which was described by team members as rousing and inspiring, Tim Denson scored a goal in the first period. Whitman Hanson tied it up in the second period. It would have been easy to quit at that point, but not for these Sachems. In the third period, sparked by aggressive play, Dennis Lussier scored the game winning goal. That was the dream for that evening at Battis Field. Sachem Soccer had joined those who had won by achieving victory over a squad with four ties in the league to that point. Who knows in the future? With the success of junior Soccer in town, a spirit of determination, and the superior coaching of Mike Perry, the sky is the limit. 107 One point victories are not van, ' common in Cross Country. In his nineteen years of coaching, ]on Majuri has experienced only four of them. This years squad, however, squeaked by both Rockland and East Bridgevvater by just one point. This demonstrates exceptional de- termination and effort. The runners, paced by Joe Nieves, showed this kind of determination all year. It was a 5-6 season, but one marked by a desire to win and marred by untimely injuries. CROSS COUNTRY Row 1: D. Cook, B. Pearl. T. Fongeallaz, B. Burke. Row 2: Coach J. Majuri, N. Gerrior, C. Our team was a dedicated group of hard playing athletes, but victory was not in the cards. The team always fought hard and to the last minute, but many close decisions went the other way. We are proud of our team both as fine athletes and fine representatives of Middleborough High School. We would have preferred a winning season, but as a team, they worked hard and made things exciting. Coach Littlefield has announced his retirement as Varsity Basketball Coach for the coming season after 10 excellent years in that position. He will be greatly missed next year by players and fans alike. Thanks for all those great years of Basketball, Coach Littlefield. 113 Girls Basketball Varsity Row 1: ]. Cronin, E. McGlone, W. The eleven lovely members of the court - Cory Haggerty, Sue Day, June Bernabeo, Wendy Kinsman, Michele Tetreault, Laura Stevens, Monique Gelmo, Sandy Emond, Sherry Quindley, Tammy Chesk and Maureen Boutin were escorted into the cafeteria to await the decision.
