Mom and Dad Good luck seniors and conservationists ' From N.D. Woodburn DEDICATION We are all unique indivicluals with our own tal- ents and interests which will carry us in very different directions throughout our lives. There is, however, a very special bond which exists, binding each of us to the unforgettable memo- ries of our lives here in Middleboro and the tremendous influence the town has had on each one of us. This bond will not be broken even as we travel our separate ways, far away from home. With this in mind we dedicate Timaron 1982 to the town of Middleboro, our home. Our sincer- est love and appreciation is extended to all of the people who have helped us in so many ways and to the very special friends we have shared so much with over the years. She is. in our hearts, a member of the MHS Class of ' 82! Great are they who see . . . that thoughts rule the world 45 CAREER EDUCATION Lisa Sullivan Middleboro Pharmacy Providing opportunities to experience productive applications of acquired skills 46 MHS CLASS OF 1982 HISTORY Once upon a time in the Borough a group of individuals became a totality known as The Class of ' 82 . They began t o develop their unity in Junior High through such activities as dances, parties, ski trips, sports, Student Council, Acadia and PCC. In the fall of ' 78 we apprehensively entered Middleboro High School as Freshmen. Although our political insight was limited, we made excellent choices for class officers: Tim Mortimer as President, Bob McGuirk as Vice President, Marcia DeMoran- ville as Secretary and Linda Lemmo as Treasurer. Our school spirit was boosted as we followed The Middleborough Sachems on their way to Superbowl victory against DomSavio. Returning to Middleboro High School in September of ' 79, we looked forward to being full fledged students of high school. We were no longer the babies , we were now the wise fools. . Our Sophomore year was full ot still more fun and activities as we, the Class of 1982, became more active in school life. That year we chose as our leaders Bob McGuirk, DeeDee Holmgren, Julie Erickson and Sheila O ' Leary. ' We followed the Sachems to yet another Superbowl victory against Dom Savio. YEAH!! One of the highlights of Sophomore year was finally getting our class rings. ' We were very proud of three classmates: Marci DeMoran- viUe and Bob McGuirk who were elected to Silver M and Matt Guilford who was chosen for All State Band. Our sweet six- teen parties were a far cry from our end of the year going away parties, at which we really went . . . up, up and away . . . As the summer of 1980 drew to an end, we realized that when we re-entered high school in the fall, we would be, finally, upperclassmen. We bade the exchange students farewell for one year and wished them the best luck in their host countries — Jim Briggs went to Argentina and Barbara Freidenfeld went to Fin- land. We were plagued with PSAT ' s and SAT ' s. We were sad to see Dr. Johnson go, but were delighted to welcome Mr. Wassel as principal. By mid-winter our agenda included weekly treks to the cottage. Highlighs of the spring included Silver M induc- tions of Sheila O ' Leary, Kim DeCaro and Tim Mortimer; Nation- al Honor inductions and the ACappella musical Bye Bye Bird- ie . To close ourjunior year, we had ourjunior Prom on May 8 at Independence Harbor. Our queen was DeeDee Holmgren. Carry- ing us through our Junior year were officers Bob McGuirk, Donny Quindley, Kris Hickes, and Linda Lemmo. Before we knew it. Senior year had arrived. At long last we were the leaders of the school. Leading Student Council were Tim Mortimer, Kim DeCaro, Marcia DeMoranville, and Kris Hickes. Our class officers were Bob Ace McGuirk, Kim K.D DeCaro, Marcia Wifey DeMoranville and Sheila Squeeb O ' Leary. Although we had many important decisions to make about life, we still had time to devote to our Senior activities such as Yearbook, planning the Senior Prom, sports, and an endless array of other activities. The Coronation Dance was a big success; Titi Alvarez was selected as queen. We will also look back on other memorable Senior activities. Primary among these are our Class Night, Class Play, Baccaleaureate, Last As- sembly and Last but not least, GRADUATION! 47 CLASS POLLS MOST SCHOOL SPIRIT LEAST SCHOOL SPIRIT CATHY CLARK, TONY DECHRISTOPHER KEVIN HOLLAND, DAVE MADDIGAN 48 BEST LOOKING BEST DRESSED BETH TECENO, BOB HALLGREN LISA SYNNOTT, MARK BARBOZA MOST GENEROUS EVELYN LITTLE, DON QUINDLEY MOST SARCASTIC BOB JONES, NANCY MACALLISTER MOST OPTIMISTIC: DAWN BERGEN. I came here in August through Educational Founda- tion for Foreign Study. I will leave at the end of June. Three weeks before I came to the USA I was in England, except the last week when I was in France, including Paris. I enjoyed my time in England and I like it much here! This school year doesn ' t count for me, so I have another Senior year back in Sweden. The school system there is very different. The first two months he re I lived at the Melvin ' s with them I went to Canada for a week. Now 1 live at the Raynes ' and they are lovelyJ It is very good for me to be away from home for a year. I now realize how much I love my family. My parents are divorced and my 16 year old sister Lena and I live with Ma and her husband who is a wonder- ful person. We all adore our 16 month old brother Edward. We are living on a farm where we have approximately 500-600 calves, 20 sheep, hens, two horses and two dogs. One of them is used for hunt- ing in the fall. Our stepfather goes hunting for moose, deer, fallow deer, hares and foxes every fall. Outside our house, which is a manor house, we have a lot of apple trees. Every fall we can find a couple of moose there in the mornings. My father and his lovely wife, ' Vvonne, live in the city where I go to school. It ' s very nice to be close to them. A few months agojohanna was born, so now I have a baby sister. My father comes to the USA to show the golf bag he has invented. On one of his visits, we will go to Miami and my sister will visit MHS for a week. I ' m very happy to be here! Upper Left: Karin with brother Edward L ' pper Right: The hunt is over and Karin enjoyed it Right: A view of our farm house in Sweden 1 was lucky to spend a year in Argentina. Argentina is located in the southern part of South America. The capital IS Buenos Aires. A city of nearly 11 million people, it is the center of culture and commerce for most of South America. The town I lived in is called Rauch and is located 250 miles southwest of Buenos Aires. It is located in the pampa region of Argentina. The pampa is a flat treeless area stretching for a thousand miles by a thousand miles. My town has a population of about 10,000 people. Half of the men are gauchos or cowboys. The main products of the area are lamb, beef, and grain. I had the opportunity to travel quite a bit. I went to Brazil, Paraguay, and the Andes mountains. The people all over were very friendly, and live a lifestyle much slower than ours. It was a great experience, which I really enjoyed. JIM BRIGGS SPENDS A YEAR OF ADVENTURE IN THE ARGENTINIAN PAMPA REGION 64 OPPORTUNITY TO LEARN ABOUT OTHER CULTURES Upper Left: My Co- lumbian and Ameri- can families meet Above: Titi enjoy- ing the nearby land- marks of Plymouth Left: Mr. Lindsay, my host, and my family I I spent my Junior year in Vasa, Finland. Although I missed my family and friends here in Middleboro, I had many unique exper- iences in Finland. I was sent there by the Middleboro Rotary Club. I lived with a wonderful host family in an apartment house in the center of Vasa, Finland. I attended a small Swedish school with a class of only 1(K) students. The courses I took were English, Swedish, Russian, Math, History, Religion, and Music. During my year in Finland, 1 visited Lapland and travelled to Leningrad, Russia. I spent the month of June touring Europe by train. I saw the Eiffel Tower, the Riviera, Vatican City, the Alps, medieval castles and many other fascinating sights of Europe. My year abroad was truly a very enlightening experience. Thank you to everyone who made it possible. TITI ALVAREZ VISITS FROM COLUMBIA My name is Isabel Cristina Alvarez. I ' m an ex- change student from Columbia. I came here through the Rotary Club. My country is in the northeastern part of South America. It has 25 million people and is the fourth biggest country in South America. It has boundaries of the Atlantic and Pacific oceans. This is very im- portant because it makes communication with other countries easier. The capital is Bogota, where I live. It is the biggest city of the country with a population of five million people. Bogota is the center of reunions for Erudites and artists; it is known as the Athens of South America . Bogota is also the commerical center of Colombia. Our biggest product is the coffee which is famous for its taste and quality. I attended Maria Mazzarello School . This is a very small school in comparison with Middlebor- ough High School. It has 500 people from all grades. Kindergarten to grade 12. We all wore the same type of uniforms, white with blue trim. Graduation in June will be my second one, because I ' ve already graduated in Colombia. When I came here I thought that everything was going to be really different, but it really isn ' t like that. I had a good time here. I think everybody is really nice; that ' s one of the things I like most here. The people are very friendly. I ' m never going to forget this year of experience, and I ' m always going to remember all my American friends. I want to say thank you to everybody for giving me all this year of happiness. Also thank you to Middleborough High School, and all the teachers who made this year easier for me. We looked at the other Establishing this place three classes and tried to would have been difficult if find our place amongst not impossible without these them. people. We have undoubted- ly grown because of their guidance and leadership. They taught us, fostered us, and tolerated us. And through their inspiration and understanding we now have the courage to take chances, to reach for our dreams, and to succeed. Inside your heart there Hes apart from all your cares and sorrows, A paradise which knows no sighs, a world of happy tomorrows A heaven of light, unknown to blight of winter, bleak and dreary, Whose days are long and sweet with song, whose hours never weary. What matter though your pathways glow without a springtime gladness r What if each June comes all too soon and leaves you with a sadness? No love will prove so true, no tones one-half so tender No lips so pure as those which lure the soul to visioned splendor. LINCOLN D. LYNCH, D.Ed. Superintendent of Schools To the Class of 1982 The seemingly long four years you have spent at M.H.S. are quickly drawing to a close. The entire staff hopes that you feel that these years have helped prepare you for the exciting years to come. The learning you have acquired during this time is but a working tool which is now about to be put to the test. Your real education will be shown in the path you take, in the strength you develop and in the service you perform. Although I have only known you for less than half the years you spent at M.H.S., I will always fondly remember the Class of 1982 for so readily and unequivocally accept- ing me into your school family. The Sachems have been known for their outstanding athletes and teams for as long as anyone can remember. During our years in high school, we have been winners in two Super Bowls and numer- ous league titles. In our final three years we were important elements on many of these fine teams. On behalf of the class of 82 , we present the athletic season 1981-1982, one of the most obvi- ous ways that we have gone for it during our high school years. FOOTBALL The Sachem Varsity Football Team contin- ued its rampage on South Shore League oppo- nents this season, finishing with a 7-5 record and winning the large school title, despite droppmg the overall title to Abington. It was a slightly disappointing season to those involved, as the three losses all came in closely contested games, two on fourth quarter come- backs by the opposition. After each loss, howev- er, the Sachems came back strong with decisive victories. Led by the outstanding play of Quarterback Mark Ambrose (Sr. Tri-Capt.), Tailback Sherwin Grennum (R), Wingback Scott MacNayr (Soph), and Linemen Dave Benoit (Sr), Mike Hatch (Jr), Jack Bean (Soph) and Scott Wassel (Soph), Middleboro made their presence felt every week, most notably in a tough loss to Wareham and in a big victory over Abington. Jr. Lance Barber, who was off to an outstand- ing start, was injured early in the year, and this was costly to the vaunted speed backfield of Middleboro. This, however, gave Sr. Dan Kaya- jan his chance and he responded tremendously and played well the rest of the way at the full- back slot. Mark Ambrose threw nine touchdown passes to finish second in Division IV, while Scott Mac- Nayr ended up on the receiving end of seven, also finishing second in the Division IV race. Making big plays in the MHS defensive back- field were two guys who frequently went with- out recognition, Mark Barboza (Sr TriCapt) and Glenn Washburn (Jr). Their efforts combined with those of Mark Estabrooks (Sr. TriCapt) and John White (Jr) held their opponents in check. Bill Fuller (Jr) and Dave Rossini (Sr) aided in the effort. With ten starters returning, the Sachems can look forward to another fine season. The Senior Class wishes the team the best of luck next year. Hatch The Sachem Soccer program suf- fered some setbacks this season, but under the watchful eye of Coach Mike Perry, the team played very well at times and deserved victories in some closely contested losses. Sparked by Senior Co Captains Fred Teceno and Mark Coelho and Frank Tallino, who was leading scorer, MVP, and SSL All Star, the Sachems gave it all they had. They played shoulder to shoulder with the League ' s best teams more than once this season. The team played extremely well ear- ly in the season, and their efforts against East Bridgewater, Rockland, Abington, Cohasset and Hanover were all strong, despite tough losses. Seniors AJ Znotin, Jim Briggs, Dan Lussier, Darryl Nix, Mike Longworth and Lenny Teceno were also big contribu- tors this season. Coach Perry summed up his feelings by saying, Even if they didn ' t win, it was a pleasure coaching them. They tried just as hard every minute they played, whether they were far behind or right in the game. MHS 0 E. Stephanian Experiencing a dramatic rebirth in Middleborough over the past two sea- sons, the Girls ' Field Hockey Team, composed almost solely of underclass- men, did themselves proud this season. One highlight was beating Duxbury for the first time in eleven years on the way to posting a 7-6-3 record. Led by CoCaptain Ruth Moffatt (two year MVP and starter) and Co- Captain Lisa Brown (two year MVP), the team got off to a strong start and fielded a highly competitive team throughout the season. Lisa Brown has been voted captain for two years straight, which is a first for the team. She and Lucy Stepanian will serve as co-captains next year. Lisa was elected to the SSL All Star team, and was a leading scorer along with Maureen Reynolds. With all but one starter returning, and an excellent JV team (6-3-3 re- cord), the future looks bright for Coach Costa and her team. Hopes are high for a tournament berth next year. But with a lot of determination, they have rebounded this year to have a good season. Though injury plagued, the Sa- chems finished with a 4-3 record. The squad was paced by senior Jeff Viera, a SSL All Star, until an injury brought an early and unfortunate end to his sea- son. Scott Turney ran with an injury for most of the season, intensifying the burden on the rest of the squad mem- bers. The Sachem harriers, under the strong and able leadership of Coach Jon Majuri, are hoping for a comeback next season. The MHS Boys Cross Country squad completed its season with a 4-3 League record which resulted in a fourth place standing. MHS 52 Abington 25 MHS 21 Rockland 35 MHS 23 E. Though the team was small in number, the girls worked hard all season, and often times saw victory close at hand, only to have it slip away. Led by the outstanding contributions of tri cap- tains Marcia Demoranville ( ' 82), Corry Colby ( ' 82) and Stacey Greene ( ' 83), the team put forth an excellent effort. Coach Sullivan was pleased with this year ' s team and hopes that, with an increased number of swimmers, the future will prove to be successful for Middleboro Girls Swimming. Pacesetters for this year ' s team were Bob Atkins, Greg Cook, John Clarke, and Chris Clark, who were consistant winners in their in- dividual events. B.Hampton With six Seniors, the Sachems had a fine season and were it not for some heartbreaking last second defeats, might have posted an outstanding re- cord. Led by Captains Dave Benoit, Lance Littlefield, and Mike O ' Neil, who were helped out by the excellent play of Fred Teceno, Kevin Lizotte and Mark Ambrose, the boys won five of the first six before dropping a contro- versial heartbreaker to Hanover, 57-56. Injuries hampered the team after this, for example in closely fought contests against Rockland and Abington. Last second defeats to Duxbury and Han- over at the end of the season were also hard to swallow, but the play of the six Seniors was something Coach Little- field could be proud of, and their fighting spirit will be long remembered in the annals of Middleborough Bas- ketball. The three captains, who all put in three years with the Sachem varsity, are to be especially commended for their tenure at MHS. Key efforts were also contributed by Mark Ambrose in two years on the Varsity squad and both offensively and defensively by Kevin Lizotte and Fred Teceno. As rebuild- ing years go, however, this has to be consid- ered to be a positive one because of the impact made on the program by underclass- men. After Captain Kathy Clark, Varsity ex- perience was hard to find on the squad, but the play of Juniors Lisa Brown, Maureen McGlone, Dawn Smallwood, and RaeEUen Parent, coupled with that of Sophomores Kristy Ambrose and Maureen Reynolds and Freshman Brenday Forcier was constantly improving all season long. Maureen Reyn- olds was outstanding week in and week out, and she should develop into one of the finest players Middleboro has seen. Her efforts, coupled with the large number of under- classmen and the fine Junior Varsity team this season, should prove to be the formula for success in the years to come for Coach Harrison and his girls. Childs 118 The Marching and Concert Band has been a long standing tradition MHS. Directed by Mr. Richard Nelson, the band is enjoyed by the public performing at activities such as football games, Christmas concerts, parades, pops concerts, and ex- change concerts with other high schools. At the football games, the band plays a number of songs, providing an excel- lent half time performance. The Christmas concert features a variety of Christmas melodies, old and new. The Pops Con- cert features current and popular songs reflecting the times. Exchange concerts give the band members an opportunity to travel to another community and share their musical talents. This year, exchange concerts were held with Southbridge High School. The Band includes a number of talented Seniors who are deserved of recognition because of their long hours of dedica- tion and their accomplishments. Matt Guilford is 1st Trom- bone, 1st chair; he has been selected for District, SEMSBA, and All State and is presently a member of the Greater Boston Youth Symphony Orchestra. Representing the Clarinet and Tenor Sax section is Mike Matheson. Mike plays his saxa- phone during marching season, then during the concert sea- son plays both Clarinet and Tenor Sax. He has been active in both SEMSBA and District. Three Seniors, Dick Brooks, Rob Desrosiers, and Butch Kyrouz, play first Trumpet. LuAnn Thompson plays both 1st Flute and 1st Piccolo. Chris Clark, who plays first Trombone, 2nd seat has been active in SEMSBA. The talents and efforts of these seniors will be greatly missed next year. Congratulations on your accomplishments!
