EUGENE MC AFFEE, DEBBIE DUNHAM Director of Media Service Dedication We, the Class of 1980, will never forget the fun and laughter we shared with you. When it came time for you to go, we all cried, because physically, you were no longer with us. Now, our Senior year, the year we have all striven and reached out to attain, has come. We know that as we walk up and accept our diplomas, you will be there, as you are meant to be. To you, Mr. McAffee, Debbie Dunham, and Kevin Crandall, we dedicate this yearbook. You were a large part of our past and fond memories of you will always remain in our hearts. The Class of 1980 We ' re traveling on an endless path that leads us to tomorrow. We look behind us and remember all our joy, our sorrow. We walk into the future, not knowing what we ' ll find. But we ' ll look back on that path, to what we ' ve left behind. My name is Heidi Pilli-Sihvola. I came here to the United States through the Rotary International Youth Exchange Pro- gram last August. It is a great experience for me to be here. I have met so many people and enjoyed living with several fami- lies, the Schmidts and the Marcys. I have become familiar with their lifestyles and ways. It is a totally different situation to get to know the country than if you would come as a tourist. I have been in New York City where all the ex- change students who came from Finland (86 of us) had a tour around Manhatten. We visited the United Nations, the Empire State Building and the Radio City Music Hall. Then I travelled through New Hampshire and Vermont. We have had meetings for exchange students in Massachusetts and the Rhode Island area; one in Newport and one in Provincetown. For Febru- ary vacation I went to Los Angeles. There I visited Disneyland, Universal Studios, Beverly Hills, and at- tended a lion safari. The place where I come from in Finland is a small town like Middleboro. I live with my parents in an old estate which now serves as a restaurant. The climate in Finland is about the same as here. Summers here are longer and winters are milder. The school I go to in Finland is a very small one. We have only about 350 students and school goes from grades 5 through 12. So, the whole Senior class last year numbered only 33 students! The school system is very different from the American educational program. The first thing that separates the Finnish and American systems is we pay for our school in Finland for the last three years. The rules and regulations are more like Junior Colleges here. I think this is good because changing from high school to college goes smoother. School here has left me with a little bit of confusion. Teaching methods, of course, are basically the same. But the variety of different types of students here makes me wonder how they all fit in the same type of behavior. Ithink this is the reason for some academic and social problems for the students. But having an opportunity to attend this type of educational in- stitution has been for me a very enlightening ex- perience. Overall I have enjoyed very much my stay here, the school, and especially the people. Sincerely, Heidi PhilliSihvola A friend and me on Finland ' s Independence Day December 6, 1978 My father and a boy who works for us, in front of our house My Ma and Dad My sister and father on Christmas 41 Good luck to our son Warren and all friends in the class of 1980! After all the time that ' s passed, this is where it ends. Our thanks goes to our teachers, our faculty, our friends DR. LINCOLN D. LYNCH Superintendent of Schools A Thought for Today, Tomorrow If you think you dare not, you don ' t If you like to win But think you can ' t. It is almost certain you won ' t If you think you ' ll lose, you ' re lost For out in the world we find Success begins with a fellow ' s will. It ' s all in the State of Mind. If you think you are outclassed, you are; You ' ve got to think high to rise. You ' ve got to be sure of yourself Before you can ever win a prize. Life ' s battles don ' t always go To the stronger or faster man; But sooner or later the man who wins Is the man who thinks he can. LIFE ' S PATTERN There is a plan by which our lives should run . . . A destiny to reach when day is done. One mightier than us has set the goal Which man must reach before the plan is whole. This earth a unity; the final aim Not individual riches, power, nor fame . . . But universal good. In youth a job to occupy our time; To cultivate a mind and body fine That mid the working hours of adult life We may toil forward in a world of strife To execute the plan which He laid down; Not all our care for personal renown . . . But universal good. Where is the recompense when age arrives? What is the final goal of all our lives? My friend, if I have done through all my years The best that in me lies, I have no fears. I ' ll look with pleasure on a life well-spent If all my powers and faculties are bent . . . For universal good. -Merton L. Pratt (1879-1976) 62 DR. KENNETH L JOHNSON Principal MR. This year ' s effort was a perfect example of such determination with the Sachem ' s ' 78 Superbowl victory to match. Every victory was a stepping stone toward the goal of another Division IV Championship. No one person was the key to victory; the accomplishments this season were possible because of the teamwork among squad members. This teamwork was evident with come-from-behind victories against Norwell, Wareham and of course Dom Savio. It was also demonstrated by strong substitute performances when faced with injuries to key players. The one Sachem defeat, against an excellent Hull team, can partially be attributed to costly penalties. This loss strengthened the team ' s resolve in contests which followed and ironically the Varsity improved its performance, successfully fighting off challenges by fine teams. The Superbowl contest against Dom Savio demonstrated the Sachem ability to fight back and win. The team is very proud of its coaches and fans. The expertise and dedication of the coaching staff is certainly a factor in Sachem excellence. The fans played a big part in the results all season by boosting team spirits. As Antho Jeffery said, Our fan superiority was shown at the Superbowl and we ' re proud to win for the town . This sentiment was echoed by other squad members. Superbowl details are on page 126.
