MtDDUBORO HIGH SCHOOL CLASS OF 1979 PRESENTS Glows from the rays of the rising sun . . . the Beginning Anticipation of things to come and events to happen — we hesitate, then leap ahead. The future is ours. The newness of the day . . . It is time for preparing, thinking of our future, where to go, how to get there. riMMON OUR PERSONNEL OUR ACTIVITIES — 13 — US — 41 — OUR TEAMS — 95 — THEIR ADS — 121 — The Sun lights the many paths to new horizons. Ahead lies the unknown — hopes and fears of untr ied paths. JVe the Class of 1979 DEDICATE OUR Yearbook to all of our Teachers: NOT ONLY OUR S CHOOL TeACHERS, BUT OUR Parents, Friends, and Every- one else who helped us to build a Solid Foundation upon which our Life can be based They gave us kindness and wisdom To teach us the worthier things . . . Patience enough to encourage our hearts To love life, whatever it brings. They inspired us to look for and find the best in ourselves and each other. How can we express the gratitude we will hold in our hearts forever? Our many thanks to the MHS Faculty o y-t To the Class of 1979 A thought for today, tomorrow, and forever: If you think you dare not, you don ' t. If you like to win but think you can ' t it is almost certain you won ' t. If you think you ' ll lose, you ' re lost. For out in the world we find, Success begins with a fellow ' s will It ' s all in the State of Mind. If you think you ' re outclassed, you are. You ' ve got to think high to rise. You ' ve got to be sure of yourself Before you can win the prize. Life ' s battles don ' t always go to the stronger or faster man. But sooner or later the man who wins Is the man who thinks he can! DR. LINCOLN D. LYNCH, Superintendent of Schools KENNETH L. JOHNSON, Principal To: Class of 1979 Aesthetically, it is time. It is time to inculcate an appreciation for life ' s eternals throughout your curricular being. Many are obsessed, almost confined, by their over-concern for bricks and mortar rather than form, shadow rather than substance. A singular aspect: consider the universality of music and the arts. Line and form as laid down centuries ago are as critical today as ever before. Embellishments come and go but the true essences remain unchanged. Indeed, it remains for you to nurture and develop within the framework of each discipline to which you adhere, academic and non-academic, this identification of and appreciation for those universals inherent in its particular design. Aestheticism, philosophically, can never be denied. 4 1 t MR. JAMES ANSELL Basic Aeronautics, H H Management Can anyone help me fix my plane? MR. RODERICK M. When first arriving in Sweden I had to contend with the problem on not knowing the language. School seemed to he difficult because of the language bar- rier but as time went on the language became less difficult ana I was able to speak well enough to make conversation. Leaving all of my friends back home and coming to Sweden was one of the hardest things I could have ever done but I ' ve made it work and I ' ve enjoyed my time here. Being in Sweden has been one experience I will never forget and I ho[)e many other jx ' ople will be able to experience what I have. There have been manv times that I ' ve felt a little homesick, but for the most part I tried to always keep myself busy by gaining tremendously in self- kno w ledge and knowledge of others My experiences on this tnp are not too different from what I had expected. I have Kept a positive attitude dur ing my year in Sweden and have grown from all the oppor- tunities to learn. Looking forward to seeing you again — Sincerely, Carol FORMER CLASS MA TES ELLEN DOHERTY ANNE MARIE SOBEL DOREEN JOHNSON Sitting on the dock across the street from where I live A NIT A DEO SPENDS SENIOR YEA RAT MHS With Anita and Honey Dad, Mom and Jeanne October 1978 I find myself sometimes sitting down and thinking about the past few months of my life. It is kind of unbelievable that I really am in Middleboro. It was only in May, i977 that I first applied to the Rotary for this program and a few mo nths later I was told I would be coming here. Soon after this I received a letter from Mrs. Schmidt, my first host mother, and from then on the days went by in a flurry. I was welcomed by my host mother at Logan, and a week later I joined you here at MHS. I must admit it was different, and I did feel out of place for a few days, but with the help of teachers and friends I was soon at ease. I have made quit« a number of good friends who have helped me in many ways. I would like to thank them and I am very grateful to all of them. During my stay, I have already travelled to New Jersey, Boston, Mystic, Cape Coa and other places and I will be seeing even more places. Over the months I have been learning many new things which I will never forget. This year will leave a beautiful, indelible mark on my life. I would like to thank all the people I have met and known for making my stay here a very happy one. I value very greatly all of your love and friendly. Sylvia, M. Shaft The record of the MHS Cross Country Squad, again undefeated in dual meets and first place in Invitational meets, speaks for itself. It was a superb season fashioned by exceptional runners competing for a Middle- boro squad wherein excellence of performance became the standard. When reduced to basics, the statistics mean that the Middleboro team defeated the first 70 competing teams it met this season. Immodest words from the coach? To the con- trary, in that the runners themselves are responsible for their record; and for the record, I have to say that this year ' s squad is the best I have coached in 16 years of experience. The front seven runners largely responsible for our success were: Troy Bickford, Jeff Viera, Greg Clark, Rick Donovan, Steve Brad- ley, Steve Mills, and Tim Varney. The remain- ing members of the team also had a role in this season of seasons. They constantly pushed our Varsity runners in practice and in meets, occa- sionally beating one or more of them. This group consists of Randy Nunes, Mike Parent, Rick Lee, Pete Cadorette, Glenn Bigelow, and John Cadorette. We also had an unseen force on the squad this year, a force that was always present at practice and meets providing incentive and encouragement for our squad members. This group consists of runners who were injured during the season and therefore unable to com- pete. Included in this group are Mike Schaaf, Roy Sylvia and Scott Tumey. The Freshmen in this group will be a very important competitive force on the team for the next three years. To Seniors Rick Donovan, Steve Mills, Mike Parent, Roy Sylvia and Bob Bruillard, remem- ber: your successes, John ' s Pond and Pop Tarts, relaxed running at Sandy Neck, to check your shoelaces, which way to go and to make your own luck. To one and all, thanks for your best. 1 01 ' Coach ' TROY BICKFORD Old Timer , consistant front run- ner, small in stature, but what ' s there is all heart and leg, Bick to his Sachem friends. This fall 8|K)rt8 season will long be remembered for the achifvcmt-nls of the Boys Cross Country and Football teams. Cross Country Coach Jon Majuri certainly knows the feel- ing of iH- ' ing 1. The team, with a 67-0 Dual Meet Record over six vears ran away with the SSL Championship and earned a berth in the State Meet. Even though MHS was one of the smallest schools represented, the Sachem runners olaced sixth out of 21 teams. The squad came in first in the following meets: Division III of The Catholic Memorial Invi- tational Meet, Division III of the SSL Principals ' Invita- tional Meet, and Division V of the Massachusetts State Meet. On December 2, Middleborough fans swarmed to Parsons Field for the Division IV Superoowl against Dom Savio of East Boston. The game started out well for the Sachems. The Sachems kicked off and the D immediately shut down the Savio SjMirtans. The turnover fired up the Sachem Offense. After a steady march to the end zone, Dan Leonard scored the first touchdown of the game. Tom Kayajan ' s point after kick made the score 7-0, which was all the Sachem scoring needed for a victory. Second ouarter brought some of the most exciting moments or the game. A Savio scoring threat was turned back from the one yard line by the powerful Sachem defense, leaving the Sj)artans at the 15 yard line. Half time will be remembered with pride by Middlelwr- ough fans. Our band of over 100 members, Twirlers and Color Guard put on a well rehearsed and entertaining pro- gram. The Cheerleaders, with the able assistance of Ronbie James, also outclassed the opposition. In the second half, multiple turnovers halted scoring attempts by both teams. Savio finally scored a second halT touchoown but failed in a two point attempt. This was the end of the scoring and the Sachems returned home with the Superbowl Championship after an exciting and hard fought 7-6 victory. This game was characterized by a fine team effort in which all players did their job. Congratulations to the Sachems for a job well done! l)y Andy Kurowski and Steve McGuirk WE ARE Dan Leonard — 206 yards for the day. Super psyched. Offense to the line. Although Middle- boro got off to a slow start in the season, with skillful plays, teamwork, and excellent coaching, they ended up Number One in the South Shore League. Tied for first place with Holbrook, Duxbury, and Cohasset, the MHS team, with great support from the community and the Superfans , rallied to beat Holbrook by a score of 79-48. and Cohasset by 20 points. The mighty Sachems kept up their winning streak through the games that followed beating their all time rival Hanover and winning the decisive game over Duxbury 65-60, capturing the league title for MHS. The game against Duxbury was also Coach Littlefield ' s 200th career victory. Congratulations to both the team and the coach for the excellent per- formances they gave us all season. A sometimes lonely word, it speaks of being awkward, strange, unfamiliar. A fearful word. Changing is hard work for a human being; it can be painful and unpleasant. Even when it leads to something good, like independence, self-reliance, or greater happiness. We do not change easily. When you find yourself faced with change. Think of all the changes you ' ve faced already: getting your driver ' s license, your first date, your first job. Remember how you felt after each one; How silly all the worry seems now. Make up your mind to make change as smooth as possible. Change can be healthy — There is no growth without change and no life without growth.
