Mexi- Rafael with MHS Soccer Team. It was in February 1977 that I first thought about coming to the United States. The International Rotary Club made this experience possible. When I arrived in the States on September 10, 1977 I remember exactly how I felt. I didn ' t speak any English and didn ' t know what to expect. Mr. Walter Schmidt and his family picked me up at Logan and brought me to my new home. I ' m living with them now; they are very nice people. Four days later I began my school year at MHS where I found a lot of friendly peo- ple and made a lot of good friends. All these friends have helped me adjust to this system and I am grateful to them. In Mexico we eat a small breakfast, go off to school or work, then go home and eat dinner between 2:00 and 3:00. Our meal at night is a small one. I didn ' t have any problems adjusting to the American system. I was on the Soccer team, where I found excellent friends and had unforgettable experi- ences. I really enjoyed playing on the Soccer team. I hope to try out for the Ten- nis team this spring. During the year, I have travelled. I have visited New York City, New Jersey, Boston, Plymouth, Cape Cod and other places in Massachusetts. I want to go to other areas in the States. The students in the exchange program had weekends which we spent at different places. It provided an opportunity to meet students from different countries. My visit here was an excellent learning experience. I know I will never forget this year and all the nice people I have met. So I say thank you to all my friends, my teachers and all the people I have met. A todos mis amigos, profesores y gento gue conosi les doy las gracias per todo. y les deseo la mejor suerte del mundo. con carino Rafael Ann Kilpatrick, ' 78, Exchange Student to Sweden This Year To My Classmates at MHS, We have had a lot of good times together and some that weren ' t so good, but I think we will always remember the friends we made. Older, maybe wiser, people have said that these are the best years of our lives; and though we grumble and complain about the teachers, the administration and the amount of homework, I think that all of us, deep down inside, do realize that when we receive our dip- lomas and walk down the halls of MHS as stu- dents for the last time, that the years we spent there were not as bad as we thought. I just wish all of you could experience what I am experiencing. It ' s true what they say — You never know how good it is, till it ' s gone. I ' m just beginning to realize how good were my three years at MHS, with you, my friends and classmates. Although I am far from Mid- dleboro, I still feel very much a part of the Class of 1978 — the best class ever to gradu- ate from MHS! fry S Km : ' Si.- ' -1 Above: Rita, Laci, Susanna and I at the airport right after I arrived at Lulia. ' t ' - ■4j n ?3 ■a It v: 54 Messages to the Seniors Seniors: Please consider this poem by Joseph Norris, reflective of a philosophy which may enrich your lives. Drop a pebble in the water. And its ripples reach out far; And the sunbeams dancing on them May reflect them to a star. Give a smile to someone passing Thereby making his morning glad; It may greet you in the evening When your own heart may be sad. Do a deed of simple kindness; Though its end you may not see. It may reach, like widening ripples, Down a long eternity. Very truly yours, Lincoln D. Lynch, D.Ed. Superintendent of Schools Seniors: Pure air is perfectly dark. It is only the impurities abounding in the air which give us, by their reflec- tion, the glorious light. — Wiggins Almanack, circa 19th Century Thus, magnitude by brilliance, size without. Exude but a scintilla, still Observe variegated lustre. As the speck, so reflect your light. Consider not as impure pall but as Timely vestige of true resource. You are the vexillary of hope. Tnis is Mr. Nelson ' s twentieth year of teaching music in Middleboro. In his first year Mr. Nelson assisted with the beginner ' s band, the junior and sen- ior high school bands and orchestras, A Capella Choir, Men ' s Glee Club and elementary music programs. At that time the music staff consisted of three people; it now has ten people. Mr. Nelson feels the expansion of the music program is due to public support and student interest. These factors have accounted for the incorporating of Piano Keyboard, Men ' s Glee Club and a Freshman Choir. This has also allowed the Band and Orchestra to meet five times a week instead of three. Because of the size of the Music Department, Mr. Nelson now concentrates primarily on band activities. Over the past twenty years the biggest change in the music program has been in the marching band. In the past seven years the band has recovered from double sessions to the extent that an experience on the marching field with any area band increases pride and the air of accomplishment in our own band. This could not have been done without the constant effort and attention of Mr. Nelson. We thank you! Mr. Richard Nelson 71 Row 1: S. Lemmo, J. Maz- zei, M. Stoodt, F. Day, M. Raynes. Row 2: G. For each one of us, life is a puzzle, containing so many pieces. Yet as we travel our separate ways on the road of life Within us there shall be music; In times of despair. In moments of glory. Music is so much a part of us for it binds us together in harmony Just as singing songs sung before Brings back cherished memories Which were shared. Donna Noyes Girls ' Chorus Row 1: C. Silvia, T. This was due mainly to the Seniors on the squad who showed excel- lent leadership and the response of the underclassmen. After seven games, the team record was a dismal 3-4. Strong team leadership resulted in resounding victories against Duxbury, Apponoquet and East Bridgewater; with these three wins, the season was a winning one. Butch Callan and Mike Ekstrom were chosen by their teammates as the Most Valuable Players on the ' 77 squad. Mike Ekstrom was chosen by the Middle- boro Gazette as the MVP of the Thanksgaving Day Ga me. Butch Callan won the Standard Times Spotlight Player of the Year Award. Both Callan and Ekstrom were named to the all star teams of the Taumton Daily Gazette and the South Shore League. Named to the Standard Times Suburban All Star Team were Butch Callan, Mike Ekstrom, Jim Marra, Dave Fisher and Brendon Murphy. Ekstrom was also honored with the Callan Award. Leading scorer Butch Callan gained 1 550 yards this season, compiling a HS career total of over 3000 yards. According to Coach Callahan, the tri-captains are to be congratulated for the excellent job they did this year. Congratulations and best wishes to next year ' s tri-captains Bill Bradbury, Dave Fisher and Glenn MacNayr. The team managed to keep most of the games, even the losses, exciting. The improvement in the team has been attributed to the dynamic coaching of Eliot Blumberg and the enthusiastic response of the team. Cross Country Squad produced another successful season, earning its fifth consecutive League Championship, its sixth Principals ' Association Meet Championship and finishing in fifth place in division four of the state meet. The team also extended its dual meet record to 57-0 which means that M.H.S. has not suffered a dual meet loss in five years. Team captains this year were Rick Donovan and Walter Maxim. They, along with the other members of the squad were responsible for transform- ing a rebuilding year into a champion- ship one. Coach J. Majuri. 1st Row: S. Bradley, P. Cadorene, M. Heeks, S. Linda Heeks, two records were set, in the South Shore League Championship and the Principals ' meet. She is also the MVP on her team. Beth Cous- ins is the Captain of the team. Two freshman girls. Dale Garceau and Carol Clark, made the State Finals held in Gardner, Ma. This is a feather in the cap of their coach, Mr. Leo Libby and an impressive accom- plishment for the girls. Freshmen do not always shine in their first year of running. The rest of the Cross-Country Team which helped us obtain our successful season this year were, Claire Cadorette, Lanoka Wilson, Paula Carey, Nakoma Wilson, Lynda Einstein, Patricia Malefant, Anna Marie Gerrior who also did a fine job. This IS an excellent example of team sportsmanship. With the expert job done by Mr. Libby and his team, they should walk or should we say (run) away with the top awards next year. Row 1: L. The team was hit by injury and sickness to key swimmers, which lowered their hopes. In spite of these prob- lems, the team record was the best in its history. What was more important to the Sachems however was qualifying for the state tourney after an absence of two years. The season started off slowly as the team tried to adjust with the blending of veterans and rookies, posting a 3-4 record for the sea- son ' s start. At this point the team jelled and won 1 1 of the next 1 2 games. The . team went on to beat Dover Sherborn,  the tri-valley champions (19-2) by a one sided 64 to 49 score They went down to defeat against a very fine Rockland 4 team, however. 1 Mark Norek and Paul ' Butch Callan ' |t were co captains of this year ' s varsity W five and both were selected to the all league team. And the puzzle is completed. Take what you ' ve learned in your lifetime. And you ' ll have enough to walk on to the future. Leave all you ' ve touched in the past behind And you ' ll have enough room to let Tomorrow bring you forward. It all makes the reason worth finding And the puzzle worth putting together. Just knowing that once it ' s completed. No one can take the picture of the Puzzle ' s last piece in place away It will always be in the minds of those Who made the final masterpiece.
