LINCOLN D. LYNCH Superintendent of Schools Seniors: I can think of no better message for young people about to enter a new life than this poem by Edgar A. Guest. Humor, perseverence and a sincere re- gard for others are essential in- gredients to a happy life. IT COULDN ' T BE DONE Somebody said that it couldn ' t be done, But he with a chuckle replied That maybe it couldn ' t, but he would be one Who wouldn ' t say so till he ' d tried. So he buckled right in with the trace of a grin On his face. If he worried he hid it. He started to sing as he tackled the thing That couldn ' t be done, and he did it. Somebody scoffed: Oh, you ' ll never do that; At least no one ever has done it ; But he took off his coat and he took off his hat, And the first thing we knew he ' d begun it. With a lift of his chin and a bit of a grin. Without any doubting or quiddit, He started to sing as he tackled the thing That couldn ' t be done, and he did it. There are thousands to tell you it cannot be done. There are thousands to prophesy failure; There are thousands to point out to you, one by one. The dangers that wait to assail you. But just buckle in with a bit of a grin. Just take off your coat and go to it; Just start to sing as you tackle the thing That cannot be done, and you ' ll do it. Edgar A. Guest May I share with you a few homespun, workable bits of philosophy gleaned over the years for which I accept no credit of author- ship: Set your sights high enough: extend your reach further than your grasp. Too often we get caught-up being more concerned with the shadow rather the sub- stance of the matter. Some are so concerned about being in tune with the times that they become tone-deaf to the song of life. Seemingly conflicting, but try to find the median between: Cannot move forward con- stantly looking back over your shoulder; and, Pluck from the past that which enlightens the present. We hear a lot about individual freedom. Remember, your degree of freedom extends only as far as the end of the other fellow ' s nose. Hold your feelings in bound. Remember that intellect is but a speck on the sea of motion. Finally, Middleboro ' s own H.B.B. on frequent occasion would say: I ' d rather wear out than rust out. Or, Need a task done? Don ' t bother with anyone who isn ' t busy. My sincerest wishes for success in your future endeavors. Kenneth L. Johnson, Principal KENNETH L. JOHNSON Principal
