LINCOLN D. LYNCH Superintendent of Schools Seniors: I can think of no better message for young people about to enter a new life than this poem by Edgar A. Guest. Humor, perseverence and a sincere re- gard for others are essential in- gredients to a happy life. IT COULDN ' T BE DONE Somebody said that it couldn ' t be done, But he with a chuckle replied That maybe it couldn ' t, but he would be one Who wouldn ' t say so till he ' d tried. So he buckled right in with the trace of a grin On his face. If he worried he hid it. He started to sing as he tackled the thing That couldn ' t be done, and he did it. Somebody scoffed: Oh, you ' ll never do that; At least no one ever has done it ; But he took off his coat and he took off his hat, And the first thing we knew he ' d begun it. With a lift of his chin and a bit of a grin. Without any doubting or quiddit, He started to sing as he tackled the thing That couldn ' t be done, and he did it. There are thousands to tell you it cannot be done. There are thousands to prophesy failure; There are thousands to point out to you, one by one. The dangers that wait to assail you. But just buckle in with a bit of a grin. Just take off your coat and go to it; Just start to sing as you tackle the thing That cannot be done, and you ' ll do it. Edgar A. Guest May I share with you a few homespun, workable bits of philosophy gleaned over the years for which I accept no credit of author- ship: Set your sights high enough: extend your reach further than your grasp. Too often we get caught-up being more concerned with the shadow rather the sub- stance of the matter. Some are so concerned about being in tune with the times that they become tone-deaf to the song of life. Seemingly conflicting, but try to find the median between: Cannot move forward con- stantly looking back over your shoulder; and, Pluck from the past that which enlightens the present. We hear a lot about individual freedom. Remember, your degree of freedom extends only as far as the end of the other fellow ' s nose. Hold your feelings in bound. Remember that intellect is but a speck on the sea of motion. Finally, Middleboro ' s own H.B.B. on frequent occasion would say: I ' d rather wear out than rust out. Or, Need a task done? Don ' t bother with anyone who isn ' t busy. My sincerest wishes for success in your future endeavors. Kenneth L. Johnson, Principal KENNETH L. JOHNSON Principal MR. JOSEPH L. Since then the trend had been totally uphill. They have won three consecutive championships in a high- ly competitive league. Coach Majuri comments that the success is due to tough league and intra- squad competition for all positions. Along with high team honors were some indi- vidual ones. Jason Washburn finished fifth in the first Mass. vs. Conn. Meet. High honors were also won by Jim Libby and Joel Pickering, who won medals in the State Divisional Meet and Matt Sukeforth and Ron Leonard who won med- als in the Fall River and League Meets. In addition to being undefeated in regular season meets, Middleborough also finished sec- ond in the State Division V finals, won the Principals ' Trophy in the South Shore League Meet for the second consecutive year and placed second in the Fall River Invitational Meet. 70 71 MHS SOCCER TEAM NOTCHES FIRST VICTORY 72 loe Peters. For the first time in MHS DECA history, two of the state officers are students at Middleborough High School. Susan Jewell serves as President of the state organization and Scott Jurgelewicz serves as Treasurer. The Senior Chapter has been active in school and civic affairs. A weekend flea market, the continued program of involvement at Lakeville State Hospital operation of the DECA Store and the DECA night store are examples of how DECA students are active in the community. This year, the Distributive Education program has grown from one teacher to two. Miss Teresa Pendleton joined Mr. George Sherman at MHS this year. Among her qualifications, was serving as a national DECA officer. Another MHS DECA accomplishment this year was organization of the first alumni chapter in the state. Mr. Sherman has been appointed state advisor for alumni chapters. The MHS DECA Chapter was also chosen Regional Chapter of the year. At press time, the Chapter members and advisors are eagerly preparing for the State Chapter of the year competition. In summary, MHS has a DECA program that ' s really great and we ' re proud of all they ' ve accomplished!
