Johnson Principal Message to the Seniors Through eternities, though fraught with lapse, stands the precepts of formal inveterate er- udition. I mbued with form, with uncommon elan, thrusts with true temper the blade of knowledge. M etamorphosis of thought, pattern, behavioral mode — all due of the pierce. Allure of the new, ever increasingly sublime al- beit time, a gradient, imposing on some, enhancing others. Regnant shall be thought, reason the auger of perception. O ft recall performance past, build-on, that depth of purpose is thus provided. Nowise then, can ignorance prevail but only diminish. Kenneth L. Johnson, Principal Lincoln D. Lynch Superintendent of Scnools Reduced to its simplest terms, my duty is to make the educational system as effective as possible for every student in it . . . Lincoln D. Lynch That Mr. Lynch lives up to this standard is evi- dent in his devotion to the position of Superin- tendent and in his many contacts with the students. We, the members of the Class of 1974 thank Mr. Lynch for his devotion to an ideal which has been of benefit to all of us. 14 Henry Gamache Our best wishes are with Henry — a young man whose courage we admire. We are proud to have spent most of our school years with him, and know that his patient and optimistic outlook will help him to succeed. 15 In Memory Kim Emmons Blue bird on a rock, slow wind blowing soft Across the bare face of the sleeping lake Rise up and be free, voice whispered to me And in this way you will awake Go climb up on a hill, stand perfectly still And silently soak up the day Don ' t rush and don ' t you roam, don ' t feel so all alone And in this way you will awake. The Journalism Class, instructed by Mrs. Linda Vintro, was responsbile for writing and printing the paper. Every month they turned out a publication filled with news, cartoons, features, sports, and coverage of various activities. Mrs. Vintro deserves praise for organizing Middleboro ' s first student newspaper since The Sachem, which folded when double sessions began at the old Memorial High School. She has worked very hard to make The Sentry a success, as did all the staff members. During student activity periods the staff was assisted by the Newspaper Club and Mr. Joaquin. The seniors on the staff would like to thank Mrs. Vintro and the entire staff for the great job they did. And the other staff members are looking forward to next year so they can do it all over again! Members of the Student Activity Com- mittee are: Row 1: ). Pickering, R. Stuart Row 2: L. Kujanpaa, L. It was sug- gested by a student, Jim Cushman, that Mr. Hilsabeck ' s class go on a field trip to a place most of the students had never been. Mr. Hilsabeck then suggested, that if enough students wanted such a trip, planned where to go and financed it themselves that he would do what he could to help. It was then decided that we would go to Washington D.C. With the help of Mr. Hilsabeck and Mr. Maryotte the plans took shape. We left for the trip around 1 1 PM Wednesday, May 23, 1973, and planned to be gone for three days and two nights. We slept in the bus on our way to Washington D.C. and made three stops before arriving. In Washington D.C, we stayed at the Washington Hilton Hotel. When we arrived, on Thursday morning, Mr. Hilsabeck and Mr. Maryotte checked us in, gave us our room numbers and keys. We all had some free time at the hotel to do what- ever we wished. At around noon we took a public bus down- town and ate lunch in a cafeteria-style restaurant. After lunch, all of us walked to the Capitol Building and walked about before a scheduled interview with Congressman Studds. After the interview we walked around again, touring the Capitol Building. Then we walked to the Museum of His- tory and Technology and then to the Museum of Natural His- tory. We split up into three groups, one headed by Mr. Hil- sabeck, one by Mrs. Hilsabeck and the third by Mr. Maryotte. Back at the hotel, Mr. Hilsabeck and Mr. Maryotte took orders from all of us for supper. Friday morning, we walked to a Hot Shoppe restaurant for breakfast. From the restaurant we boarded the bus and went to Ford ' s Theater for a sound and light show and to a museum across the street, called, The House Where Lincoln Died . We went to a Gino ' s for lunch; from there we went to the Lincoln Memorial. We then went to Arlington Na- tional Cemetery and saw the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier and the J.F. Kennedy Memorial. We had to spend a little more time at the cemetery than planned, however, because Karen MacAuley was lost there. We then went to the Iwo )ima Memorial, to the Jefferson Memorial, and then to a tour of the Bureau of Printing and Engraving. We had supper at the cafeteria in the Museum of History and Technology. On our last day in Washington we slept until nine. We packed our bags for departure. Later we met for breakfast. After breakfast we went to the Washington Zoo, spending most of the day there. On the return trip, we made one stop for supper in Dela- ware. We arrived in Middleboro at about 10 PM, on Satur- day, May 26. The group involved in this field trip would like to thank Mr. Hilsabeck and everyone else who made this un- forgettable experience possible. Despite opinions that this was a building year, the team was successful due to the hard work of its members and coaches. What the team lacked in talent it made up for in dedication. After a disappointing 32-8 loss to Wareham, the Sachems started their winning ways by edging Sharon 7-0. The team followed this up with three league wins. The first was a close 6-0 win over Duxbury. The second was achieved by defeating Cohasset in a hard - fought 22-15 battle. The third was a 34-6 rout of Holbrook. Mistakes and tough competition contributed to the only three league losses: Hull (8-34), Norwell (14-28), and Hanover (14-30). The team closed the season with a rousing, (28- 14) come-from-behind, Thanksgiving victory over East Bridgewater. Two Sachem players were named to the South Shore League All Star Team. They are Mike Masi — offensive tackle and Tom Warren — defensive lineman. Receiving honorable mention as linebacker was Dave Harrison. Mike Masi also earned the Sachems Most Valuable Player award. The Brains of the Operations 87 CROSS COUNTRY COMPILES ASTOUNDING 17-0 RECORD The Middleboro runners came from a cellar position in the league last year to upset everyone with a 14-0 record. Their winning streak was continued from a 3-0 preseason record, including a win over highly - favored New Bedford High. Coach Majuri commented that the teams success was due to tough inter-squad competition for top positions. This competition and the comparable talents of team members resulted in good showings by Middleboro ' s top 5 runners. Along with the successful team record there were some impressive individual showings. Jim Libby went undefeated by opposing runners in dual meets and came in fifth in a large field of freshmen at the Somerset Invitational Meet, jason Washburn, Leo Libby and Harry Taylor picked up some top points for the team and also did well in their class at the Somerset meet. The team qualified for the state finals for the first time ever and placed 3rd of the 25 teams. The team placed fourth out of 47 teams at the Catholic Invitational and second (1 point behind first) at the Fall River Invitational Meet. The Cross Country runners wish to express their graditude to Mr. Libby for his assistance and encouragement in helping the squad in their success. ml i First Row — J. Pickering, D. Cuidoboni, L. This has been attributed to partici- pation in Hockey camp, Miss Salley ' s expert coaching and the enthusiasm of the players. Sullivan, Coach Frank Littlefield Frank Littlefield, who in two years at M.H.S. has coached two winning Varsity Basketball squads The Basketball team led the winter sports schedule with a winning 16-7 season to tie Hanover for second place in the South Shore League. This qualifed the Varsity for the state tourney in which they continued to win until the semi-finals of division III. After edging Hopedale 65-63, the Sachems beat Mission High by a score of 65-57. Further plans were ended at the semi-finals by a fired up Martha ' s Vineyard team 63-58. Coach Littlefield claimed that the Sachem success on the court this year was due to three experienced players and support from some young tal- ent. Coordinating these talents was the coach ' s biggest job. The team faced a setback partway through the season as captain Jeff Fagerberg suffered a knee injury. Depth in the second string kept the team alive until Jeff returned to help in the tourney. High scorer for the season was Dave Harrison, a junior with 331 points, closely followed by another Junior, Jay White. Both will be shooting for the 1,000 point mark for their high school Basketball careers next year. 96 JUNIOR VARSITY Row 1: T. Riley, E. Ellis, P. Trinque, M. Hinkle, M. Hen- derson, C. Showing great hustle and determi- nation, the young team posed a challenge to every team in the league. And when the broken hearted people living in the world agree , There will be an answer, let it be. For though they may be parted there is still a chance that they will see, There will be an answer, let it be, Yeah there will be an answer, let it be. ( Chorus ) SOUNDS OF SILENCE Hello darkness my old friend I ' ve come to talk with you again Because a vision softly creeping Left its seed while I was sleeping. And the vision that was planted in my brain Still remains within the sound of silence. In restless dreams I walk alone Through narrow streets of cobblestone Beneath the halo of a stree lamp I turn my collar to the cold and damp When my eyes were stabbed by the flash of a neon Split the night and touched the sounds of silence And in the naked light I saw ten thousand people maybe more People talking without speaking People hearing without listening People writing Songs that voices never shared No one dared disturb the sound of silence. Fools, said I, You do not know, silence like a cancer grows . Hear my words that I might teach you, Take my arms that I might reach you. Put my words like silent raindrops fell And echoed in the wells of silence. And the people bowed and prayed to the neon god they mad And the sign flashed out its warning In the words that it was forming And the sign said: The words of the prophets are written on the subway walls and tenement halls. And whispered in the sounds of silence. 1974TIMARON Middleborough Hiph ,
