Mrs. Moore, We, the class of 1973, are proud to dedicate our year- book to you. For fifty devoted years you have looked upon teaching as more than just a job. As a teacher you have helped to guide the careers of many students over the years. As head of the Business Depart- ment, you have won the respect of students and faculty alike and have done much for our school. It is thus with deep appreciation and respect that we dedicate this year- book to you. Mrs. Esther Moore Mr. John Hilsabeck Mr. James Murphy Ladies . . . and gentlemen . . . , please Where do you get off? 6 ■■• Science Mr. C. Paul Waterman Darn it! Mrs. Marie O ' Brien Miss Maureen Higgins Mr. Joseph Zilonis, Department Head, Pro Tern Does everybody icnow what Silence please Ya, I think so ... they ' re supposed to do? Lincoln D, Lynch Superintendent of Schools Message to the Seniors: Successful people become successful because they have formed the habit of doing things failures don ' t like to do. The famous French writer, Jean Cocteau, had a rule of living: Always to get up one more time than I have fallen. Perhaps the most dramatic words on the subject of hard work are contained in the motto of the U.S. Army Engineers: The difficult we do at once. The impossible takes a little longer. Remember that most people who have realized their dreams have had to fight to slay the same dragons that you will have to battle. They have, as you must, held on to their dreams and stood toe to toe with adversity until they won. As you set out to face the world aim for the stars and hold onto your dreams. It will not always be easy but, if you believe in your dream, if you learn the art of getting along with and serving your fellowman, and if you have the willingness to stand squarely on your own feet and battle, your dreams will no longer be dreams, you ' ll be there. Kenneth L. Johnson Principal PrincipaVs Message to the Seniors Wend forth from gleam to goal lest One ' s ego contains him for naught. Relieve the bind of vestigial tradition that Looks not just the soul but the mind of man. Defend not the past that enlightens not the present. Let go of the pre-essences carefully tho, — for Integrity must prevail in one ' s value design. Neo-social awareness bespeaks of the transcedence of Emotional preceptions, seemingly comfortable; Seductive, however, in that complacency merely Sanctions the present, unmindful of what the future will demand. 16 Assistant Principals Mr. Joseph King Message to the Seniors: God grant me the courage to change the things I can change, the serenity to accept those I cannot change and the wisdom to know the difference. — But God grant me the courage not to give up what I think is right, even though I think it is hope- less. Attributed to: Admiral Chester W. Nimitz Armed Forces Prayer Book — 1951 Best wishes for the success of every member of the class of 1973. Sincerely, .Joseph L. King Mr. Norman MacDonaicL Message to the Seniors: In life there are no guarantees; yet opportunities are abundant. Success and failures become as mere points on a scorecard as one travels down the highway of challenge. My sincerest wish for each one of you is that the totals on your scorecard of experience will be overwhelmingly those of success, and rich in the satis- faction of joyful living. JUNIOR VARSITY 85 Soccer — Team Shows Promise in Second Season In only the second year of organized soccer, the team showed signs that in the near future MHS will have a good, sound soccer team. Under the guidance of Coach Brooks and the leadership of the four seniors Bill Kujanpaa, Terry Rober- son, Paul Heinig, and Brad Johnson, the team managed to stay close in all but a couple of their matches. With some breaks, the team might have been able to pull off a few more victories. They completed the season with a 1-7-1 record. In building for the future and to give the team some depth. Coach Brooks invited junior high students to participate in the sport. At the conclusion of the season, the team traveled to Stonehill College to watch a match between Stonehill and Holy Cross. The players aspire to play this kind of ball and got many pointers. Row 1: B. Duphily. B. Zablowski. W. Clllis, W. Gillette. S. Kujanpaa. S. McNeil, L. Sousa. M. Mortimer. B. Maksy. C. Falconeiri. They ended regular season play at 15-3, second place in the South Shore League, and then tuned up for the Tech Tourney by winning the league playoff tournament. This year ' s team under the new coaching of Frank Littlefield has developed into one of the best all around teams in the area, from the starting five to the reserves. This year ' s team has shown great depth which has not been seen for quite a few years. In the Class II State Championship Play-offs Middleborough won their first game against an Old Colony Team, Rockland, 72- 63. In their second play-off game against Medfield, the Sachems came close to winning an 83-81 thriller in four overtimes. Johnson, G. Hill, C. Anderson, R. Berr) ' — Coach. Wrestling is one of the fastest growing sports in youtii organizations, schools and colleges. It is one of the oldest sports enjoyed by man. Many of the skills have been handed down through the centuries with very little change in the fundamen- tals. Wrestling received considerable publicity in the recent summer Olym- pics, which has aided in its popularity. Previously, Wrestling was only to be found in the general physical educa- tion program at M.H.S. In January of 1972 a wres- tling club was formed at M.H.S. by a group of inter- ested students. Due to the initial interest, enthusiasm and response interscholas- tic competition began with the Winter Sports Program in 1972- ' 73. As is true in many sports, experience is a very vital factor to the overall success of an indi- vidual as well as a team. A considerable amount of valuable experience was acquired by the team dur- ing the year as it had a 10 match schedule. M.H.S. competed against seve ral veteran teams such as Foxboro, Duxbury and Marshfield as well as Plymouth-Carver and Bridgewater-Raynham who were in their first year of competition as well as was M.H.S. A highlight of the 72-73 Wrestling season was the commendable showing the team made at the Marsh- field Invitational Tourna- ment in February, winning 3 second, 2 third, and 3 fourth places. The coming ' 73- ' 74 sea- son should find the M.H.S. Wrestling team in very good shape. There will be a veteran team returning as only three seniors will be graduating. The squad has a nucleus of Freshmen and Sophomores. Several of the wrestlers had a suc- cessful season. Among those were Tom Warren, Mike Masi, Paul Gouveia, Mark Hoult, Gary Hill, Doug Leary and Jon Olson. All of the above will return next season with the excep- tion of Doug Leary and Jon Olson who are Seniors. M,H,S, First Hockey- Team Shows Hustle, Future Looks Bright Led by Captains Jim Gotham, Alan Rink and Alvin Rink, and coached by the very capable Steve Daly, the hockey team made its debut in the South Shore League against Cohasset, a team expected to reach the tourney by the end of the season. Cohassett was expected to beat the Sachems by at least nine goals, but the Middleboro skaters came out hustling and showed an undying spirit that stayed with them throughout the year. The game was closer than most people thought it would be, 5-0. Since then the team has skated well enough to earn many victories, but Lady Luck was against them. The team has predicted a tournament berth next year, how- ever. HOCKEY SQUAD Row 1: P. Gasunas, J. Holmes, E. McQuiggan, J. Gotham, A. Rink, D. Thomas, W. Thomas, K. Crocker. Row 2: N. Wil- I liams, S. Morse, J. McCormick, W. Garceau, Coach Daley, B. Linton, D. Goodnow, P. Michael, J. Moakley. They have very capable personnel. The Rink brothers, Alan and Alvin, are one reason for the prediction of a better season next year. Outstanding hockey potential has also been demonstrated by goaltender Kevin Crocker, wings Bruce Linton and Scott Morse, and center John Moakley. This year ' s defensive pairings are Alvin Rink and Ed McQuiggan, John Holmes and Donny Thomas, and Bill Garceau and Dana Goodnow. Other forwards on the team include Joe McCormick, Nat Williams, Pete Michael, and Bill Thomas. The back-up goaltender is Paul Gasunas, a good future prospect. Special mention should be made of the superb coaching of Steve Daly. He took a group of boys who have played nothing but pond hockey and he has turned them into a team, and a well-balanced one at that. The seniors who will no longer be with the team are Jim Gotham, Ed McQuiggan, and Donny Thomas. All three played regular shifts and will be missed on next year ' s tourney-bound team. 96 Girls ' After building up a good, strong team the Girls ' Varsity Squad has shown much spirit, which led them to five wins this season. With Pat Salley in only her second year of coaching and a determined, young junior Varsity squad coming up, it looks like a new, bright future for Girls ' Bas- ketball! VARSITY; Row 1: K. The God of all creation, The God of power, the God of love, The God of our salvation; With healing balm my soul he fills. And every faithless murmur stills; To God all praise and glory. 2. What God ' s almighty power hath made , • His gracious mercy keepeth; By morning glow or evening shade His watchful eye ne ' er sleepeth; Within the kingdom of his might, Lol all is just and all is right; To God all praise and glory. 3. The Lord is never far away. But through all grief distressing. An ever present help and stay. Our peace and joy and blessing; As with a mother ' s tender hand. He leads his own his chosen band; To God all praise and glory. 4. Thus, all my toilsome way along, I sing aloud thy praises. That men may hear the grateful song My voice unwearied raises ;; . Be joyful in the Lord, my heairt. Both soul and body bear your part; To God all pEaise and glory. AMfiN ;.; ii- ■. ■IMMORTAL, INVISIBLE, GOD ONLY VIISE , 1. Immortal, invisible, God only wise. In light inaccessible hid from our es, Most blessed, most glorious, the Ancient of Days Almighty, victorious, thy great name we praise. 2. Unresting, unhasting, and silent as light. Nor wanting, nor wasting, thou rulest in might; Thy justice like mountains high soaring above Thy clouds which are fountains of goodness and love. 3. To all, life thou givest, to both great and small; In all life thou lives t, the true life of all; We blossom and flourish as leaves on the tree. And wither and perish, but naught changest thee. AMEN O ' GOD OUR HELP IN AGES BAST 1. 0 God, our help in ages past; Our hope for years to come , Our shelter from the stormy blast. And our eternal home I 2. Under the shadow of thy throne still may we dwell secure; Sufficient is thine arm alone, And our defense is sure. 3. Before the hills in order stood, or earth received her frame. From everlasting thou art God, To endless years the same. 4. A thousand ages, in thy sight. Are like an evening gone; Short as the watch that ends the night, Before the rising sun. 5. Time, like an ever rolling stream. Bears all its sons away; They fly forgotten, as a dream. Dies at the opening day. 6. 0 God, our help in ages past, Our hope for years to come; Be thou our guide while life shall last. And our eternal home. ' AMEN No. 7 7l Litho in U S.A.
