FACTS AND FIGURES Pyfc— X III i mm mm -I — THE NEW MIDDLEBOROUGH HIGH SCHOOL r 1 1 classrooms including science suite and preparation rooms, upper access to audi- torium UPPER LEVEL Main visitors entrance, administrative, guidance and health suites, centrally lo- cated library with audio-visual department, 10 classrooms. 600 seat auditorium divisi- ble into three smaller lecture halls, arts and crafts rooms, clothing and foods labs, student activities area. MIDDLE LEVEL Bus unloading and main student entrance, 13 classrooms, cafeteria seating 400. kitchen, lower access to auditorium, band and chorus room, music appreciation, wood shop and general shop, mechanical drawing, gymnasium seating 1100 (three teaching stations plus corrective gym). LOWER LEVEL He who asks seriously the question of the truth that liber- ates, is already on his way to liberation. He may still be in the bondage of dogmatic self-assurance, but he has start- ed to go away from it. He may still be in the bondage of cynical despair, but he has already started to emerge from it He may still be in the bondage of unconcern about the truth that matters, but his unconcern is already shaken. These people are of the truth and on their road to the truth. On this road you will Tieet the liberating truth in many forms, but there is one in which it will not be met. You never will meet it in the form of propositions which you can learn or write down and take home. But you may encounter it in one sentence of a book or of a conversation or of a lec- ture, or even of a sermon. This sentence is not the truth, but it may open you up for the truth and it may liberate you from the bondage to opinions and prej educes and conventions. Suddenly, true reality appears like the brightness of light- ening in a formerly dark place. Or, slowly, true reality appears like a landscape when the fog becomes thinner and thinner and finally disappears. New darknesses, new fogs wil fall upon you; but you have experienced, at least once, the truth and the freedom given by the truth. Or you may be grasped by the truth in an encounter with a piece of nature - its beauty and its transitoriness ; or in an encounter with a human being in friendship and estrangement, in love, in dif- ference and hate; or in an encounter with yourself in a sud- den insight into the hidden strivings of your soul, in dis- gust and even hate of yourself, in reconciliation with an ac- ceptance of yourself. In these encounters you may meet the true reality; the truth which liberates from illusions and false authorities, from enslaving anxieties, desires, and hostilities, from a wrong self-rejection and a wrong self affirmation. And it may even happen that you are grasped by the picture and power of Him who is truth. There is no law that this must happen. Many at all times and in all places have en- countered the true reality which is in Him without knowing His name - as He Himself said. They were of the truth and they rec nized the truth, although they havenever seen Him who is the truth. And those who have seen Him, the Christian in all generations, have no guarantee that they participate in the truth which He is. Maybe they were not of the truth. - Paul Tillich - MIDDLEBORO MEMORIAL HIGH SCHOOL BACCALAUREATE SERVICE June 6, 1971 ORDER OF SERVICE Organ Prelude Now Thank U e All OuJi God Bach arr. by Virgil Fox Processional Hymn Holy, Holy, Holy Call To Worship Rev. Last Chapel Baccalaureate June 6, 1971 Class Banquet June 8, 1971 Graduation SUSAN HOCKING — VALEDICTORIAN We must realize we will always have something to learn, and that we may not always be right, but whether we are or whether we ' re not, there is always the possibility that we may profit from a situation, in that we may see those in- volved as they really are for the first time, and perhaps even see ourselves in a new light. Only in this way can we come to understand one another. However, we must be able to listen as well as criticize; we must accept judgement of ourselves if we insist on the judgement of others; we must expect infringement upon our rights if we do not observe the rights of others. JANE LOGAN — CO-SALUTATORIAN During our school years, and actually all of our lives, we have been searching for the answers to many of our questions, and trying to decide with which beliefs we should agree or disagree. And now, when we are at the point where we must go out on our own, we know that the people we should respect and those we will have to depend on will be ourselves. We must do what we think is right no matter how much everyone around us disagrees. NATALIE DERRICK — CO-SALUTATORIAN The individual should be more importa nt than any organization. If we cannot communicate with others whose opinions differ from ours, how can we expect to solve political problems, for in essence governments are composed of indi- viduals? If we all were to think of each other as human beings and then act accordingly we could communicate on an equal level, for although appear- ances may contest it, in reality we all possess the same need for other people. I should like to leave you with these words from the musical production Hair ; How can people have no feelings? How can they ignore their friends? Easy to be proud, Easy to say no. Especially people who care about strangers. Who say they care abour social injustice. Do you only care about the bleeding crowd? How about a needing friend? Senior Prom Mayflower Hotel in Manomet It ' s really a wonder I haven ' t dropped all my ideals . . . . . . I still believe that people are really good at heart. Anne Frank In Memoriam DOUGLAS PRETI GRANT LEWIS, JR. 7 May, 1965 27 January, 1968 CHRISTOPHER KOPITZ 7 March, 1970 TIM A R ON 1971 Memorial High School Middleboro, Massachusetts We have found, that where science has progressed the farthest, the mind has but regained from nature Editor ' s Message The problems we face today are not so unlike those faced in the past. They may seem worse because our human thinking process, the ability to recognize true values, has not kept up with the tremendous advances in science and technology. Thus, the human spirit appears to have lost some of its strength, to have weakened. We tend to put more emphasis on materialistic things than on people, others as well as ourselves. We lack the ability to put ourselves second and others first, to share with others our talents and good fortune. Perhaps the greatest problem we face as a result of man ' s failure to develop true values is the lack of understanding and commu- nication between people. We can build great cities and they will crumble; we can win decisive victories which will be forgotten; we can attempt to discover the limits of a limitless universe, but we must realize the human spirit is the most important part of life. And so we come to the end of our high school davs. We present the 1971 edition of TIMARON as a reminder of our years at Memorial High. I would like to thank mv editorial board, our advisor, Miss Man Ann Wiedl, and all the students, faculty, administration and others who have helped make this book what it is. 1 7 DEDIC - the la t graduating class ol Memorial 1 1 i «z li School, we, the claS8 ol L971, wish to express our sincere appreciation and respect lor the school which, lor 14 wars has sened as Middlelioro High School. In the past years you have shown understanding and friendship toward your student.-. Besides this, your sense of humor has made you well liked throughout the school. Burkland 1900-1971 In Charity There Is No Excess. 7 Mr. Henry Burkland will long be remembered by the people of Middleboro, as a most kind and gener- ous man. He was born in Boston, educated in Boston public schools, and received his BS in Education and His Master ' s Degree from Bridgewater State College. He served as principal of the Bates Junior High School from 1928 to 1955 and as principal of the Henry B. Burkland Junior High School from 1956 to 1962. when he retired. Mr. Burkland was also well known for his numerous civic activities. He will be greatlj missed b all. Administration Principal ' s Message Let patience be consonant with urge, inner-ton e resonant with prudence. Your goals keep above the virtual, each firm step a hold onto the real. Be consumed b steadfast growth within, needful rigor, zeal, and purpose so alloy. Stature, form, and level achieved, once possessed, forever retain. Thus, barken to the words of Longfellow: The heights bv great men reached and kept Were not attained bv Midden flight. But they, while their companions slept Were toiling upward in the night KENNETH L. JOHNSON Principal Kenneth L. Johnson, Principal V ice-Principal ' s Message Pause to reflect upon this quotation from Sir Richard Steele, eminent British essavist. plavw right and statesman: It is. methinks. a verv melancholy consideration that a little negligence can spoil us. but great industry is neces- sarv to improve us. Joseph L. King. Vice Principal JOSEPH L. KING Vice Principal II Superintendent ' s Message IT COULDN ' T BE DONE Somebody said that it couldn ' t be done. But he with a chuckle replied That maybe it couldn ' t, but he would be one Who wouldn ' t say so till he ' d tried. So he buckled right in with the trace of a grin On his face. If he worried he hid it. He started to sing as he tackled the thing That couldn ' t be done, and he did it. Somebody scoffed: Oh, you ' ll never do that; At least no one has done it ; But he took off his coat and he took off his hat. And the first thing we knew he ' d begun it. With a lift of his chin and a bit of a grin. Without any doubting or quiddit, He started to sing as he tackled the thing That couldn ' t be done, and he did it. There are thousands to tell you it cannot be done. There are thousands to prophesy failure; There are thousands to point out to you, one by one, The dangers that wait to assail you. But just buckle in with a bit of grin, Just take off your coat and go to it; Just start to sing as you tackle the thing That cannot be done, and you ' ll do it. EDGAR A. GUEST LINCOLN D. Our Road Runners The 1970 Cross-country team found itself in a rebuilding year. After winning the Old Colony League championship in 1969, there remained only four runners to build with in 1970. Five sophomores, running for the first time, and one junior who had run some as a freshman, along with the four runners left from the cham- pionship squad constituted the 1970 team. As a rebuilding year the season record was not outstanding with two wins and six losses in league competition. The team competed in the Old Colony League Meet and finished seventh of nine teams, as they did in the league standings. The team also competed in the Catholic Memorial Invitational Meet, the State Divisional Meet, and the South Shore Meet. The re- sults of the last three meets were not favorable. At the end of the season, Dave Howes was elected captain of the team and Most Valuable Plaver. Dave also won a spot on the Old Colony League All Star Team.
