21 wmmv -SOCK VUa(;e t p.«nv • The class of 1964 can find no person more worthy of special mention than Mrs. Marion Whipple. As the advisor of Sil- ver M she has encouraged the recogni- tion of character and leadership in school affairs. As co-sponsor of the Humanities- Science classes she has brought to MHS a higher level of achievement and oppor- tunity. Above all else, however, she has given us a deeper understanding of all people, past and present, through her con- stant efforts in many enjoyable history classes. Congratulations to the Class of 1964. After twelve years of public education, you have attained one of your most important objectives. Although for many of you this is the terminal point of your education, for others, this is merely a stepping stone to horizons unlimited. Whether your future plans include work, marriage, or further edu- cation, be sure that your goals are well defined. Remember that although prob- lems arise and temporarily obscure these goals, as clouds often obscure the heavens, knowing your direction and your goal will enable you to chart a steady course in the future. Charles L. Manos, Principal Members of the Class of 1964 : Clouds are but conjectural shapes, hurrying across the sky in unending procession, from day to day. Yet God must have had a purpose for man in their creation. Perhaps they are to remind him that time is fleeting. Available time is here and now. For, while you may anticipate the future, you can never regain the past. These past twelve years have been spent in anticipation of your imminent commencement. Time for you, from now on, is a precious commodity. Spend it wisely in gaining vocation, esteem, fortune and friends. Antici- pate the ultimate purpose of your existence and proceed in the fleeting moments to achieve this goal. My sincere best wishes to each of you, Joseph L. King, Vice Principal Every high school graduate enters this exciting period of life looking forward to success. No amount of preparation nor planning can guarantee it; one must constantly work for it. As we look at the world about us, as we see man penetrating outer space, and as we observe his determination to learn the secrets of the universe, we know the future is beyond the clouds It is not for those afraid to face it and work for it; it is not for timid men without vision. May you, the Class of 1964, have the courage, the persistence, and the wisdom to look beyond the clouds and bring your expectations into reality. Sincerely, Stanley Kruszyna, Superintendent of Schools SEATED, left to right: James M. Bonnar, Jr., Vice-Chairman; C. Trafton Mendall, Chairman; Kathryn R. O ' Toole. STAND- ING: Richard B. Though the distance covered in the past four years has come and gone swiftly, the imprint on each and every personality will certainly reach far into the future. In days of old there were many types of trials: trial by fire, trial by water. We have passed through four years of trial by error. As a class we have decided the importance of trial in our motto: Through trial to triumph ! II Editorial Board STANDING, left to right: J. Gushing, Business Editor; S. Tremml, J. Lewis, M. Is she kind as she is fair? For beauty lives with kindness. SHAKESPEARE 36 Clouds do many things. They mirror our imagination. They project ouy thoughts. They obscure bur futures. An important characteristic of clofids is th at they are s oft and easily shaped. At one moment a cloud is a tree basking in summer sun. At another moment, it is a hunter in pursuit of the rainbow ' s end. In a third, it is a J i white rose gracing the heavens with delicacy. And so in 1960 another ffceshman class came to Memorial High School. Cite th; clouds our minds were nebulous, uncertain, and unsure. But four years h e sedn ou | thoughts assuming form. Like th e cl ouds .|too, |ve have been s bap ed by the influehcj of out surroundings. Our teachers, our friends, and onr paresftts have helped to moll our attitudes and our ambitions. We stand not like the haze which obscures the Eiorizon but rather like fair weather clouds ready for the enterprise of the day. When we started in our first year at M.H.S. we were shy. Evidently this reticent air hung over our athletic teams, because both in basketball and football the Class of had I lo ingj s ats b. Cheerleaders were Cindy Pierce, Linda Zion, Jan Lewis, Sue Tremml, Sue Hockwald, Margaret Perham and Pat McAulay. Class officers were Stuart M§l£im jP Edward Mulkern. Vice-President; Jan Lewis, SecretaryE land Margaret Chase, Treasurer. Ed Mulkern and Sue Hockwald were chosen for ilver M. Our first year ended quickly. As we entered our second year we were eager. This zealous determination to brin| lonpi to our class is perhaps . . . most apparent in the Sophomore Christmas Dance. With the ujiceasing work of the class, this dance was the zenith of the 1961-62 |choc ear.! ' Xhe dance was headed by Dennis King, Class President. He was assisted by Chapman. Sue Donner and Margaret Chase, the remaining class officers. ClaS jber also played a major role in the success of this dance. In our sopho- eaf we also added Ken Chapi an ja.nd udy Bailey to the Silver M rost|r. e entered our third year we were hopeful. It w is in this year that most of egan to think of our futures. Some studied college catalogues; some thought of mployment; sonie procrastinated. In this academic year we undertook our biggest ju i f hus fay: the Junior Prom. And. like the Christmas DanceJ thel Pionji jwas k total success. Committers, the Class (jouncil, aftd officers all joined to make ' Mistv the most profitable jitom injmany years. The reins of management were in the H ds of Denni King, P esidentI Linda McNeil, Vice-President; Beverly Johnsonj, SeMetary, anTT n CusFii , Treasp er. Jan ewis and Dennis King were elected to Silver M. Two more matters of note were the inductiort of seventeen members of our class into National Honor, and the success of Ted Eayts ' Science Project on the History of Middleboro. Ted represented Middleboro in ever important fair including the New England Regio ial in DarHam, New Hampshire. MOST POPULAR BEST DRESSED MOST LIKELY TO SUCCEED MOST ATHLETIC MOST SOPHISTICATED MOST DRAMATIC As we entered our fourth year we were resolute. We were determined to make every moment of work and play left to us the best possible. Ed Mulkern was Class President; Sue Donner, Vice-President; Linda McNeil, Secretary; and Beverly Johnson, Treasurer. Kathy Dunn and Cindy Pierce were elected to Silver M. John Braga and Ed Mulkern were co-captains of the most successful football season. Cindy Pierce was elected football queen. Ken Chapman, as president of the Student Council, did a commendable job in leading the student body. Cindy Pierce, Pat MacAulay, Penny Borsari, and Linda Zion cheered the teams to victory as the representatives of our class in the Cheerleaders. Kathy Dunn as editor, with Jan Lewis, Sue Tremml, and Martha Ferraguto assisting has created our yearbook. As we enter our last days at Memorial High, we can see an horizon clouded with fame and obscurity, a path, covered with velvet and calico, a door, hidden by nothing and everything. Just as our past four years have been what we have chosen to make of them, so the sands of our future will bear what we choose to write on them. DENNIS KING MOST TALKATIVE FRIENDLIEST DID MOST FOR THE CLASS MOST INTELLECTUAL ACTI V4rTI Heigh-ho! sing heigh-ho! unto the green holly; Most friendship is feigning, most loving mere folly: Then, heigh-ho, the holly! The main objectives of the National Honor Society are to create an enthusiasm for scholarship, to promote worthy leadership, to stimulate a desire for service, and to encourage the development of good character. The society has established fine standing committees to carry on its business. These committees are Ways and Means, Scholarship, Leadership, Service and Character. King, W. Caron. The Silver M Society was established to recognize students with outstanding citizenship. Election to membership is based on dependability, honesty, and fairness, cooperation, consideration for others, courage to stand for high ideals, and emulation of the qualities which enable people to live together well. Basically the members of the society are chosen by their fellow classmates. In December the seniors, juniors, and sophomores hold their respective primary elections: and in April the freshmen hold theirs. In these elections each class nominates four to six candidates. For the freshmen and sophomores, a final selection is later made by regular ballot. On the other hand, the final selection of the two juniors and seniors is made by the members of their own classes within the society itself. In addition the Student Council elects four more students to receive the award. Finally, at the end of the academic year, the senior members of the society may add any senior who is elected unanimously by secret ballot. The responsibility for maintaining the standards of the group rests with the mem- bers of the society. Delinquent members may be warned, suspended, or even expelled by a majority vote of the group. At a later time this member may be re-elected to the society if he has shown himself to once morQ,deserve the honor. The business affairs of the society are handled by its four elected officers: the president, vice-president, the secretary, and the treasurer. 49 Student Council FIRST ROW, left to right: Mr. Farley, Advisor; E. The Dance Band was founded by Mr. Luther Churchill. Sr. in 1958. At their Thurs- day evening meetings the seventeen members learn much about American dance band history and style both by playing the music and listening to recordings of the great bands. In 1962 the Dance Band won first prize in a local talent show, and as a result of this, appeared on television in a Community Auditions Show. The group participates in many local events, the most notable being an annual trip to the Veterans ' Hospital in Brockton to supply music for the Christmas party. The most important school function of the Dance Band is to provide music and entertainment at dances and concerts. 61 62 Just once more Potential Art FIRST ROW, left to right: D. Hubschwerlin, S.
