Such phrases are characteristic of the principles by which Coach Al Farley lives and teaches. Those who have played under him know that they have gained much more than the knowledge of how to play a game, for they have learned how to take defeat as well as victory. Those who have been associated with him have acquired such high principles as decency, honesty, and integrity-qualities which go into the making of well-rounded men. With keen interest and pride he watches the development of those whom he has coached. For these reasons, we the class of 1956, sincerely and proudly dedicate our yearbook to one who has taught us how to live with our fellow-men. ,714 emvriam H U. Sfffksl W Dedicated to the memory of Miss Anna C E nk . . . rin son. an inspiration to all who knew her self less devotion to teaching. 714 ,Memzfriam Wsggg 0,55 X Ut' XY'e will always remember him as a sincere and humble young man. The admiration held for him by his classmates is best exemplified by the Good Sportsmanship Award Created in his memory. 2 M MR. J. STEARNS CUSHING Many classes have been guided by Mr. Cushing's leadership, and it has now fallen to the class of 1956 to express, in farewell, the feelings of them all. We are grateful for his life. The development of a yearbook demands many more hours of work than the casual reader realizes. First of all, the business staff solicits the advertisements. Next, a rough draft is made showing the relative position of the pages and their content. Pictures are then taken. The last step is the actual typing of the material on the specific pages and the preparing of the copy for shipment. It is the staff's earnest desire that this yearbook meets your expectations. As you leaf through these pages in the years to come, may you find pleasure in reliving these activities of your four years in M. H. S. Barbara Wfilkie L. Ronald Piava. :P 'fl ia U!! r 5- Lag: 6111.45 of 1956 In September 1952, a sturdy vessel docked at M.H,S. depositing six score and more crew members. The crew, slightly green around the gills, gazed at our station for the next four years, with awe, anticipation, and some dread. These feelings were replaced by confusion as the tasks of understanding schedules and finding our way around the building overwhelmed us. Most of the confusion had disappeared, however, before we held our class election. We elected john Perry, President, Lee Bissonnette, Vice President, Marilyn Boucher, Treasurer, and Margaret Powers, Secretary. These able officers and the success of our Get-Acquainted Social helped us to get our sea legs. - With two months leave under our belts we began our Sophomore year under a new captain, Mr. john Small. Our lieutenant was Miss Whitty, class advisor. The appren- tice navigators were Frederick Underhill, President, Ronald Piava, Vice President, Sara Leonard, Treasurer, and jane Correia, Secretary. This year our sea worthiness was proven by many accomplishments. These included running two very successful dances, starting class savings for our class trip, Sophomore Dress-Up Day, the Baby Picture Contest, and the end-of-school outing at College Pond. The ferocity of hurricanes fresh in our minds, we wearily boarded ship for our third year, under the guidance of Miss O'Neil, a good old salt. The weariness had changed to excitement by class election time. Those capable officers, President, Harold Fasulo, Vice President, Frederick Underhill, Secretary, Marilyn Bernier, and Treasurer, Sara Leonard soon had the Class of '56 off on a happy, rollicking voyage. The year was marred by the tragic burning of the Bates School and the consequent necessity of using the platoon system. Despite these events we can look back on our junior year with fond memories. The high-light of the year was a very successful junior Prom. In September of '55 the crew, refreshed by another leave in home port, arrived to start its last tour of duty. No tint of green was visible for we were now on familiar ground and, as seniors, were top men on the mast, Elected officers of the ship were Edwin Tomkiewicz, President, Donald Eldridge, Vice President, Sara Leonard, Treasurer, and jane Correia, Secretary. Guiding the ship as class advisor was Mr. Joseph King, a skipper who dabbles with chemistry in his spare time. Our last year was a cheerful maelstrom of activity. The senior play, class week com- mittees, athletic events, and innumerable other duties beset each member of the class. Sometimes it seemed impossible for everything to go off on schedule. Yet, when the chips were down, the crew came through. Among the members of the crew were many outstanding athletes-and we mean girls as well as boys. It is only fitting to mention here the wonderful encouragement given our athletes by the cheering squad, many of whom are seniors. It is also fitting to men- tion the terrific job turned in by those connected with the Senior Play. The all ashore whistle has just blown and it is time to bid adieu to M.H.S. With happy memories stowed away in the recesses of our minds and our duffel bags over our shoulders, we take leave of the good ship, blinking away the tears that sailors never show. Elass J-listary Stop! Look! Listen! The Class of '57 train, carrying the history of our three glorious years at M.H.S., is just pulling into the station. In our unforgettable debut as freshmen we elected Roberta Caswell, Irving Murphy, Carolyn Marshall, and David Sopa, respectively, as President, Vice President, Secretary, and Treasurer. The friendliness and outstanding citizenship was soon recognized in Frances and Frank Petkunas and they were thus elected to the Silver society. Our first try with social events was the Get Acquaintedu dance which proved very success- ful. As Sophomores, we elected Bill Wheeler, President, Frank Petkunas, Vice President, Frances Petkunas, Secretary, and Bill Rogers, Treasurer. Under their leadership, the year proved to be a memorable one for all. The Silver Societyacquired two out- standing students, Manuel Barboza and Bill Wheeler. The outstanding events of the year included two highly successful dances, one a May Dance and the other a Winter Wonderland Dance. Upon entering our junior year at M.H.S., we find President Bill Wheeler serving a second term of office due to his fine leadership the preceding year. Also serving as class officers are Keith Humphreys, Vice'Presidentg Frances Petkunas, Secretary, and Lester Garnier, Treasurer. Outstanding citizens elected to Silver were Marilyn Perkins and Lester Garnier. Thirty fellow students were elected to the Pro Merito Society. We are all looking forward to a winning football season next year, captained by two fine athletes, Tom Powers and Manuel Barboza. The main project was our Junior Prom which proved to be the social highlight of the year. At our first class meeting this year John McDonald was elected President, Frank Follett, Vice President, Martha Nay, Secretary, and Glenn Griffith, Treasurer. These officers, with the exception of the Vice President, are serving their second year as leaders of the class. Two outstanding citizens were elected to Silver They are Diane Beck- man and David Butler. Many Sophomore boys and girls participated in sports. Pattie Atwood, Judy Wright, and Peggy Reynolds were on the Cheerleading Squad backing their classmates. Our two projects this year were a Christmas Dance and a Baby Picture Contest, both of which were successful. There has always been some member of our class in every school activity. BARBARA EAYRS RUSSELL AUSTIN 9 6 ass f I 9 5 9 OFFICERS Patricia Rogers, Secretary, james Bonnar, President, Madeline Medem l Ll urer, David Hanson, Vice President. Most of us had already spent the eighth grade in the High School building because of the fire which destroyed Bates junior High, but our first experience as members of the High School was the Get Acquainted Socialf' sponsored by the class of '58. Because of the delay in the opening of school, our football team, under the direction of Coach Toman, played only two games. Our basketball team, with Mr. Hoye as Coach, had a successful season having won the majority of their games. Both teams were cheered on by our peppy cheerleaders: Bonnie Blais, Pat Carey, Leah Coppock, Susan Edgerly, Madelyn Medeiros, Captain, Jeanne Perkins, and Nancy Robinson. The girls also played field hockey and basketball under the instruction of Miss Bartlett. Our first class meeting was held in November during which Mr. Small defined the qualifications for good class officers. Later, during our English classes, we elected james Bonnar as President, David Hanson as Vice President, Pat Rogers as Secretary, and Madelyn Medeiros as Treasurer. During the second class meeting, james Bonnar and Pat Rogers, representing the qualities of good citizenship, were chosen as members of the Silver Society. As we near its end, we feel sincere appreciation for the guidance of Miss Chouinard and the rest of the faculty throughout this, our first and quite unforgettable year at M.H.S.
