Erickson: With sincere appreciation for your prodigious effort to help us with our math problems, we, the Class of 1954, dedicate to you our yearbook, hoping to express our thanks. We can never forget the many mornings you came to school early and stayed long after everyone else had left, trying to help one of us. ' The time and effort you have put into the Pro Merito Society are never really appreciated enough, and so to you, Miss Erickson, for this and all your many traits which make you a real friend, we proudly dedicate this book. . . . .-i-:aiSri:3:23:1:3:3:313II:3:fi113II23:3:3Ii3T:13EY:3:31333:i:i:i:3:T:i:i:3:3:5,-,-.-.-.-.-.-. ....... 23:3232331311123:1:1EHFEFEHZIQii3:iiiZ3:3:?5!i'!iiiii:3:3:3:3:3:5:1'3'5'3 42-2'111Z1:fEI:2:2E1:2EIEIEI1Iz2i6FiiSEE1fiEIEIEIEIEIEIEIEIEIEW3' -1-1-2-2-3-14-1-i-fc-i-:-1-2-f31iii:3:l 1 4 4 4 1 4 2 5 s First row: Miss Ryder, Miss O'Neil, Mrs. Moore, Mrs. Matheson, Mr. Thomas, Mr. Small, Mrs. Pardey, Mr. Battis, Miss Brier, Miss Erickson. VEAZIE, Secretary to the Principal 0602 Your yearbook does not reach your hands without considerable worry and scrambling on the part of the staff and advisors. Our first task, under the guidance first of Mr. Deich and later of Mr. Allen, was to solicit advertisements and sponsors to help finance the yearbook. This occupied our attention during the early months of the school year. During the last days of the year, our advisor, Miss Wetherell, became ill and we were seriously behind schedule until Miss Alden was appointed in her place. Then we were able to begin the actual putting together of the book, in earnest. We compiled senior activities lists, found suitable quotations, passed our class polls, totaled the results, and wrote class histories. We made preliminary layouts, had photographs taken, selected proofs, obtained glossies, set up pages, had the necessary copy typed, reduced pictures to the proper proportion, and indicated the actual size in which they were to appear. Then we checked and double checked each operation. We Watched with great relief as the last copy shipment left the High School. As this is written the job of promoting and selling the yearbook is about to begin, and we hardly know what is in store for us in this branch of the business of making your yearbook. You can now see, I hope, that your yearbook does not come ready-made when the school signs a contract with a publishing firm, but entails a great effort from many sources. It is with great pride and a sense of accomplishment that we present you THE ORANGE PEAL. We hope you will derive ever-increasing pleasure from it throughout the years. GARY ISEMINGER Editor-in-Chief 14? mad? .lead Since the Class of 1954 entered Memorial High School, we have experienced many changes. Our shyness as freshmen was apparent to us as it was to others. We were entering a whole new world. When we left our freshman year and entered as sopho- mores, our shyness turned to the usual silliness that sophomores possess. Our junior year was filled with plans for our junior Prom. As seniors we were too busy to enjoy the honor of our superiority, since our graduation plans took many hours of preparation. Memorial High has changed also during the time we have been students here. When we were sophomores we saw the Washburn Unit being erected beside us. A little later our lunchroom family became much younger because our Washburn friends were com- ing here to eat. Then, too, our gym has been equipped with modern fluorescent lights. During our senior year Mrs. Pardey was given a new office. Now the girls need no long- er meet her in the back of the auditorium. Finally, as seniors we have enjoyed the new height of our water fountains. No more getting on our knees for drinks! Many new classes and organizations were added while we were members of Memorial High School. The Driver Education Program was completely different from anything we had ever had before, many members of our class took advantage of this. The Silver Society was added in our sophomore year. This gave our good citizens a chance to be recognized. On entering our junior year we were greeted by a new period schedule. This was liked by some and disliked by others. As we leave Memorial High School, we become citizens of Middleboro. It is up to us that the students after us have the facilities they need. Having been students our- selves, we shall be more alert to these needs. CAROL KERN Auiytant Editor 5 Q5 X X f N - N XXMNTJILXX X -.,,::L , ff I ,K ,T -jg? As freshmen we established something brand new-a class council to work for the betterment of the class. In our Freshman election Barry Weaver was chosen President, William Levesque, Vice President, Joan jefferson, Treasurer, and Beverly Belrose, Sec- retary. We ended our first year with an Eighth grade-Freshman social. In our Sophomore year we continued our bandwagon of events with William Leves- que, President, Barry Weaver, Vice Presidentg joan jefferson, Secretary, and Francis Medeiros, Treasurer. A Come As You Are dance on May 8 highlighted the Sopho- more year. Entering our third year at M.H.S., we elected Barry Weaver, President, William Levesque, Vice President, joan jefferson, Secretary, and Patricia Hearn, Treasurer. The biggest event of the year was the Junior Prom under the able direction of our capable advisor, Miss O'Neil. As juniors we added two new members to the Silver Society, making a total of seven from our class. The members are Joan jefferson, Barry Weaver, Kenneth Morti- mer, Patricia Hearn, Francis Medeiros, Lester Andrews, and Mary Sylvia. Scholastically, the class held its own by having twenty-two initiated into the Pro Meri- to Society. The Class of '55 has produced some outstandingathletes, notably William Levesque, Lawrence MacDonald fCo-Captains of the 1954-1955 football teamj, Lester Andrews, and Kenneth Mortimer. A few of our outstanding girl athletes are joan jefferson, Gerel Washburn, Carolyn Gravelin, and Jane Freitas. We have one more year at M.H.S., and you can be sure we'l1 continue to add to our long list of achievements. In organization, the class of '56 has had an unusual experience. At our last class meeting as Freshmen, we elected four classmates whom we thought could carry on the duties of class officers most effectually. Since then it has been necessary to have a re- election. The officers now are President, Frederick Underhill, Vice President, Ronald Piavag Secretary, Sara Leonard, and Treasurer, Jane Correia. Socially, the class has been active. This year's annual Sophomore Social was staged at Christmas time. Besides dancing, we sold refreshments and provided entertainment. This was just one ot the highlights of our Sophomore year. Then, too, we were the first class to start saving, as Sophomores, for our Senior Class Trip. Not to be left out of the honors, we are represented by Sara Leonard and Harold Fasulo, who were both elected to the Silver Society. Good luck to you both! Sports is another activity which we all seem to like and participate in. Many of our boys played on the football and basketball teams, and some of the girls helped to make hockey, basketball, and cheerleading successful. The following September we, the Class of '57, began our four years in high school. Our first class meeting was held in October, during which we nominated candidates for the class officers. Later, by means of a ballot, we elected Roberta Caswell as Presi- dent, Irving Murphy as Vice President, Carolyn Marshall as Secretary, and David Sopha as Treasurer. The Freshman football team was coached by Mr. Rapisardi, assisted by Jerry Trinque. The basketball team was under the able direction of Mr. Allen. Our cheerleaders did a wonderful job led by Captain Roberta Caswell. They were Marilyn Perkins, Alice Hearn, and Carolyn Marshall. Miss Bartlett again did a fine job of organizing our girls' field hockey, basketball, and softball teams. The girls all think she's wonderful. Plans are being made for another get-acquainted party to be held this May. Next year's Freshmen from Bates School, Assawompsett School, and Pratt Free School are planning to attend. The class elected four candidates to the Silver Society. They are Carolyn Marsh- all, Francis Petkunas, Frank Petkunas, and William Wheeler. We wish them lots of luck in the final election. And last, but certainly not least, we wish to express our gratitude to the faculty and all the upperclassmen for making our first year at M.H.S. so wonderful.
