? 5-U .w 9 fp, tht llllff' up H3 Bulletin boards help to illustrate ideas literature. Mr. Skamser's seniors use microfilm for independent study. 'FWXL studied in Language Study Pr English courses stressed literature, gram- mar, and composition. Sophomores concentrated on American Literature, compositions, and a quarter of speech, and six weeks of new transforma- tional grammar, taught by a team of three teachers. Juniors worked to improve their writing with studies of grammar, essay writing, and World Literature. Seniors be- came involved in term papers and English Literature. An experimental independent study program allowed some seniors to con- duct individual research. Culture, comprehension, and conversa- tion dominated Memorial's foreign language study. New language labs, containing such equipment as tape recorders, individual head- phones, and a phonograph, aided speaking proficiency. These labs proved far more ef- ficient and convenient than the previous ones. Mr. Robinson, Mrs. Patterson, and Mr. Kinney, the team teachers, plan their English program. Norsen Steen delivers a demonstration speech on the art of swordsmanship. F ,W !

Culture Taught by Team This year a course in Humanities was offered for the first time at Memorial. A team of six teachers from different subject areas taught the course so that the subjects could be related to one another. Covering America from 1890 to the present, in depth experiences Were provided in art, drama, history, litera- ture, and music. It is hoped that the sixty-tive students gained a richer cultural background and new interests in the creative arts. 1 Mr. Paulson, Mr. Weber, Mr. Wentz, Mr. Robinson, Mr. Mills, and Mr. Killen team teach Humanities.
