Disciples of Education Retire 'TY 'Q--me Miss Irene Berg Mrs. Marie Chatterson . ,- is Mr. John Haig Memorial regrets the loss of three faculty members who have devoted their lives to the education of young people. Latin and English have been Miss Irene Bergis areas in teaching for thirty-four years. She graduated from Eau Claire University in 1932 and over a period of years earned her M.A. at the University of Denver in 1953. Spon- soring Memorial's Latin Club for a number of years has been Miss Berg's extra school activ- ity, and as a result she became state co-chair- man of the Junior Classical League. Miss Berg, who has traveled extensively in the United States and has been to Europe twice, plans to continue traveling after retiring. Mrs. Marie Chatterson came to Eau Claire in 1944 where she has taught French and English for over twenty years. She attended Superior and Eau Claire State Universities from which she received her Bachelor Degree. Further courses were taken at the University of North Dakota and Concordia College at Moorehead, Minnesota. Advisor for both French Club and Student Council were among her extra school activities. After retiring, Mrs. Chatterson plans to live in Moorehead and spend her summers at her cottage on Pelican Lake. Eau Claire saw the arrival of Mr. John Haig in 1928 from the University of North Dakota. Two years later he went on to the University of Wisconsin to receive his Masters Degree. During his career he has taught a wide variety of subjects concerning the his- tories of America and Europe, government, and economics. He has also been involved 'in a diversified selection of extra curricular ac- tivities such as basketball, track, rifle club, and assistant coach in football. These three people have enriched the lives of the many students who have passed through their classes through the years.

Area Schools Progress In 1961, the consolidation of the Eau Claire Area Schools took place and is now under the direction of one school board. Con- sisting of eight members, the board annually handles routine problems such as the budget, development, and negotiations in the salaries of teachers and custodians. Other subjects discussed this year were new programming in the elementary school, data processing, and modular scheduling. The issue of whether a new junior high school should be built has been tossed about for the past two years. On November 18, a referendum was held and part of the Town of Union rejected it. This area was the pro- posed site of the school.
