Abes Ski to Conference Lead Excellent conditions aided the Abe skiers during the 1969-1970 season. Lee Otterholt, the conference point leader, helped the team to gain the largest number of wins in the con- ference. Because the Pinehurst ski area was closed this year, Coach Ne1son's team prac- ticed in the Forest Hill Cemetery. Kurt Richards slides through a gate. Abes Regain Undisputed Championship Ranking second in both the Associated Press and the United Press International Polls, Memorial's Old Abes finished the sea- son with a perfect 18-O record. Ten seniors formed the original team, then later in the year, two juniors helped out in Varsity ac- tion. The reserves, known as the Bombers , also aided in crucial situations. Memorial regained an undisputed Big Rivers Confer- ence title with a 12-0 Conference record. In the first game, the Abes defeated Madison's city champions, Madison East. Two other key games were against John Marshall of Rochester, the 1969 Minnesota State Cham- pions, and Wausau. Wausau was defeated in an exciting over-time game. Abe scoring statistics showed a decisive advantage over their opponents. The team made fifty percent of field goal shots at- tempted, and averaged '79 points per game to their rivals' 58.
