Fullback john Zurbachen led the Abes in rushing, chewing off 54 yards through the Rapids line. The conference season started off on a sour note for Eau Claire as the Purple lost to a determined Menominee team 19-6. Poor offensive blocking was the deciding factor in the Abe defeat. The following week the Abes won 28-6 over Marinette at home. End Bruce Emberson, center jim Hanson, and linebacker Larry Domer held the Marine eleven to only 102 yards. Zurbachen dashed up the middle for -47 yards and the first tally. Two short plunges by junior halfback George Bowman, and a phenomenal 57 yard run by Bob Gelein accounted for the rest of the Abes scores. A strong first-half saw john Zurbachen plunge up the middle for 16 yards and an Abe tally, followed minutes later by Gelein's pass to Dick Lokken, for a 13-0 victory over LaCrosse Logan. Abe defensive standouts included: Ace Quella, Bruce Emberson, Larry Hoepner, Larry Domer, and John Zurbachen. Eau Claire downed LaCrosse Central by an ident- ical score, 13-0. The Abes powerful defense held Cen- tral to a mere 71 yards. while john Zurbachen and Bob Gelein handled the offensive chores.

The score was 21-O be- fore the Panthers garnered their first tally. Sioux Falls capitalized on two Abe errors in the first-half for a 277 victory. The only scoring by the Abes was a four yard plunge by fullback -Iohn Zur- bachen. A 40 MPH wind contributed to the Abe mis- cues and possibly for their defeat. A last minute desperation pass defeated the battling Abes, 10-6, After a third quarter Lumberjack field goal. the Abes marched up the field for their TD. Wfausau then fought back to the Abes 14 yard line before the fatal pass. The loss knocked the Abes out of the Big Rivers race and gave the Champion- ship to XVausau and Menominee. Three Abe seniors received places on the 1959 Big Rivers All-Conference first team: john Zurbach- en. jim Hanson. and Larry Hoepner. Zurbachen was also placed on the All-State first team - thus becom- ing the fourth Abe in Eau Claire history to receive this honor. This rounded out a great high school grid careeer for Zurbo . who has played four years of varsity football for the Abes. 53 i i ...-
