Page Six THE E ESSAY Preparedness! What subject could be more apropos? It is,one of the foremost topics of our present-day thought, literature, and conver- sationg and rightly so, for on the ability of the United States to defend itself depends our peace of mind, our security, perhaps our lives. The necessity for preparedness cannot be over-emphasized. In many recent cases there has been demonstrated the ease with which a country, unable to defend itself and its people against aggression, may be overthrown. While many doubt the probability of attack upon the United States, still it exists and demands serious and thoughtful attention. Preparation for a possible war should include not only physical fitness and knowledge and application of modern war machines, but the habit of attempting to keep before oneis mind a clear, undistorted picture of the situation, uncolored by the exaggeration and misrepre- sentation of propaganda. As late events have proved, lowering of morale can be almost as dangerous and destructive as the most ingeni- ous weapon of modern warfare. Production, the Siamese Twin of Preparedness, plays an all-impor- tant part in our plan of national defense. To increase the size of our forces on sea, on land, and in the air and to increase the capacity of our defense production are the major considerations of our problem. Such increases have been and are being made at the present timeg and, while it may not lie within our immediate power to speed up such pro- duction, it is of the utmost importance that in this national emergency we offer our full cooperation and support, bearing in mind that they who are best prepared for war have it most in their power to live in peace fDio Chrysostoml . -Dorothy McDermott. ,KR 2 DEDICATIO To the stalwart defenders of America, both in military and in civil life, who are unselfishly participating in the great National Defense Program, we gratefully dedicate the Humanist, 1,115 S nf F ' ' vclmswzffw Home Room Teachers lIl,l.IiN 11. Their chief use for delight is in privateness and retiring, for ornament, is in discourse, and for ability, is in the judgment and disposition of business. For expert men can execute, and perhaps judge of particulars, one by one, but the general counsels, and the pilots and marshal- ing of affairs, come best from those that are learned. To spend too much time in studies is sloth, to use them too much for ornament, is affectation, to make judgment wholly by their rules, is the humor of a scholar. They perfect nature, and are perfected by experience, for natural abilities are like natural plants, that need pruning by study, and studies themselves do give forth directions too much at large, except they be bounded in by experience. Crafty men contemn studies, simple men admire them, and wise men use them, for they teach not their own use, but that is a wisdom without them, and above them, won by observation. Read not to contradict and confute, nor to believe and take for granted, nor to find talk and discourse, but to weigh and consider. Some books are to be tasted, others to be swallowed, and some few to be chewed and digested, that is, some books are to be read only in parts, others to be read, but not seriously, and some few to be read wholly, and with diligence and attention. Some books also may be read by deputy, and extracts made of them by others, but that would be only in the less important arguments, and the meaner sort of books, else distilled books are like common distilled waters, flashy things. Reading maketh a full man, conference a ready man, and writing an exact man. And therefore, if a man write little, he had need have a great memory, if he confer little, he had need have a present wit: and if he read little, he had need have much cunning, to seem to know that he doth not. Histories make men wise, poets witty, the mathematics subtle, natural philosophy deep, moral grave, logic and rhetoric able to contend. The three paragraphs above constitute the main part of Bacon's celebrated essay, On Studies . You have doubtless read this essay in your regular English classes. No doubt, also, you have forgotten all about it. Bacon's essay On Stucliesn is one that should never be forgotten, for it is the best guide for reading and study- ing that has ever been made. lt is worth reading again and again. It is one of those essays which should be chewed and digested. The more you read it, the more you will appreciate and understand the depth and breadth of a great mind. Bacon was an independent original thinker who has often been called The Father of the Scientific Methodn. He has had a great influence on the minds of those who think or try to think. Wise and learned as he was, he was a corrupt judge. His decisions were influenced by bribery. Pope has described him as the wisest, brightest, and meanest of mankind. imitate his virtues, eschew his sins. We WF, f b if va ng Q! After competing three consecutive seasons in the Glen Falls Eastern States Tourney, we gained one of the most coveted basketball laurels in the country. Besides capturing this title, our basketball team won the Hudson County Championship and reached the State Finals, becoming one of the few teams in the state to accomplish this feat for four straight seasons. Due to the hard work of Coach Burns, we were able to present a great team which showed its sportsmanship and gentlemanly manners both on the court and in the street. The team players consisted of Co-Captains Johnny Mahnken and Jack Waddon, Joe Mel- osh, Tony Bacchierri, Seymour Kantrowitz, and Tom Povolny, Harold Dorn, Gus Schaub, George Kalnin, Ray Madonna, Tom Muller, Andy Konrad, and Mike Mirabelli. Victorious over John Marshall Frosh due to the scoring of Waddon and Mahnken, the Me- morial cagers registered ten consecutive vic- tories, including wins over Trenton, the '38-'39 State Champs, and Garfield at Madison Square Garden. Then the Temple Frosh, led by Bob Dorn, an ex-Memorial star, defeated us in a closelv fought contest. After this game, we continued 4-- sweep through the county competition to wiv the North Hudson title and the right to meet Bayonne for the County Crown. The whole team having played brilliant ball, we were able to de- feat Bayonne easily in two games. Thus we ob- tained the County Championship. Again regarded as one of the outstanding contenders for the state crown, we overcame all opposition until we attained the finals. Asbury Park also having reached the last round, there Page Eighty were many fans who were happy, as we had de- feated them earlier in the season. But that night the inspired Shore Team defeated us by a mar- gin of three points. At this time we would like to bring to your attention that Seymour Kantrowitz, one of the county's most under-rated ball players, was lost to us during the tournament. Having reached the age limit he was barred from playing. He was missed not only for his effectiveness in guarding but also for his point making. When the team lost the State Championship, even the most ardent fan did not believe we would survive in the Glen Falls Tourney, and here is where our team displayed its greatness. By capturing a crown after just having lost one, the Memorial Team showed they were really champions. Led by Big John Mahnken and with spec- tacular team work, we overwhelmed Edward Little High School of Maine. In the second game, again Mahnken with assistance of Wad- don, Kantrowitz and the whole team, crumpled St. John's of Brooklyn into defeat. Finally, by defeating La Salle Military Academy, we cap- tured the crown. Beside these laurels for the team, there were also many individual awards. We placed Wad- don, Mahnken, and Melosh on the All-County Team and both Vvaddon and Mahnken were members of the All-State and Eastern States Teams. Much of the credit for the successful basket- ball season which Memorial ordinarily experi- ences is due to the untiring efforts of our coach, Mr. Burns. Because of his coaching prowess, keen foresight, and ability to make basketball players, he has led many teams to glory. We extend our congratulations to the team and to the coach. Baseball 1941 Coach-JOHN CENDo Memorialis Baseball Team is looking forward to another successful season this year. With such veterans as Joe Gabriel, Mike Mirabelli, Frank Taborelli, and Lenny Telesca, it has plenty of power at the plate. Furthermore, White, Challenger, and Grecco are also to be considered, while Chubby Reicen is doing an excellent job in handling the backstop position. The pitching burden will fall on Lou Reiger, who is expected to win a number of games. Other pitchers of promise are Red,' Brown, Tony Lechich, Robert Bostwich, Lefty Cristaldi, and Ernie Cecilia. The defense is capably taken care of by that fast infield combination of Telesca, Mirabelli, Gabriel, and Crecco. So far, Memorial's Baseball Team has shown the results of its smart coaching and spirited playing by winning 9 out of 11 games and is at present leading the Hudson County race. All indications point toward a successful season. From points earned so far from various meets. the team should have a successful season. With such veteran running stars as Marty Boyajian and Dominick Giordano. the team has already won and lost. Co-Captain John lVlullens, our leading distance runner. is making a creditable showing and with the other veterans, Fred Ehlers. William Doyle. Santo. and Mac lCldowney. is gaining many points for Memorial. ln the Field Events. Charles Covino and Martin Smith are leading the county in shot putting. Co-Captain lVlark Calak is also a standout performer in the high jump. For the first time in many years numerous candidates tried out for the team. Some of those who have proven their ahility are the following: Arthur Dunlap. Ed Holler, l.aux. Trapp. Schmidt, Kriser, Smith, Cihiam, Knetch, Krekorian. and Tomaro. linder competent guidance Willialii Walcly has shown a vast improvement as a high jumper. With such a veteran and promising group, me are sure that Coach Urowney will complete this season as successfully as all previous seasons. l'u,uf' lfiglalvfuur Intramural Basketball Champs Freshmen After School Activities GIRLS' SPORTS The Girls' Physical Education l'rogram under the direction of Miss Reiley and Mrs. Courtney is one of which we can be proud. It includes such sports as golf., deck-tennis, shuiileboard, badminton, volleyball, basketball, handball. paddle tennis, horseshoes. skating. tennis. bicycling and soft ball. There is also a program of intramural sports, played every Tuesday and Friday afternoons for the girls who are more interested in sports. Captains and co-captains are chosen by their teams, who then meet and plan their program. Basketball is the most popular sport. The Senior B's won the championship in the basketball tourney. Awards are given to the girls who receive the largest number of points. These awards are made possible through annual socials. with the cooperation of all the students. Surprise: This term the Annual Girls' Sport Social netted a profit of 3590. With this money Miss Reiley and Mrs. Courtney bought a new bicycle and two large mirrors to be used by the girls. The Senior B's of Memorial invited the Senior B's of Union Hill to come to our school and play basketball. Each team. in this intramural game, had three girls from Memorial and three from linion Hill. Such an innovation will do much to foster a spirit of good sportsmanship between the two schools.
