Mfitgigllfgf Qfffwif We if Instead of dedicating just the book, we feel the whole year should be dedicated to the man Joseph E. Bronstein. At Memorial, he is not going to be replacedg he is going to be succeeded. Dedication I think I have a singular right to speak for the adminis- tration, faculty, and students of Memorial High sincel have been associated with Mr. Bronstein in education for forty years, from the time he began his teaching ca- reer at Manchester Central High in 1932. As Memorial's only principal since its opening in 1960, Mr. Bronstein's concern for the school was always a priority. His guidance and sympathy for the students and their futures has helped to make Memorial richer. On the occasion of his retirement, we wish him every .success for the future. At Memorial, he is not going to be replaced, he is going to be succeeded. azffjbw. Because of Mr. Bronstein's late retirement notice, we were also able to cover events not normally covered. This year's dediiiafioa to a member of the English Department. Besides the duties of his regular senior English classes, he has been as- signed to teach this school's only advanced placement English course. Through his exhaustive efforts, many new and enjoyable programs have been innovated. Most of them are through the sponsorship of the Assembly Committee, of which he is the ad- visor. One should realize that the organization of the many diversified assemblies, including pep rallies takes much time. But his efforts do not end here. The movies, purchased by the Assembly Committee, have now become a regular part of the school schedule. Perhaps the newest, and most entertaining type of assembly which he has been responsible for is the an- nual folk assembly. The class of 1972, takes pride in dedicating the EXCALIBUR to James R. IX If Y as Class History 1 As we entered Memorial four years ago, we were une- ducated spiritually, mentally, and in our hearts. But since that time, we have come to know many things. Discoveries came from books. Amazing stories, The Great Mollasses Crisis , and sad stories of Biafria pierced our apathetic being. We learned to comfort others in their losses and to rejoice with them in hap- py times. We learned that teachers were human. l They became our friends - not just our superiors. We learned to live . . . 106 Unsatisfied with what we first encountered here at Memorial, we joined in the upheaval of change. The Barnacle, an underground newspaper, developed by upperclassmen, proved to be a good place to reveal our more controver- sial thoughts. Since one cannot live with out food, we began to think of ourselves as connisseurs of fine food. Cafeteria eating was not full-filling our desires. A boycott was organized and brown bagging became the style. When sandwiches be- came boring, we retumed to eating hot lunches but our taste buds were still screaming . President Nixon and Vice-President Agnew entered office. While some looked on with speculation, we were willing to wait and give them a chance in hopes of once again uniting the nation. 107 The opening of school was our biggest worry at the start of our Sophomore year. The teachers went on strike, and we had two first days of school. For the first time, Memorial High School hit national television. Sports reached their highest this year. Winning the triple crown was great. Highlighting this year, we handed Central a football defeat and won our first of two consecutive State Basketball Championships. Some of us were shocked with the rumor of Paul Mc- Cartney's death. But to save the tears of millions, Paul showed up in front of the cameras and proclaimed that he was alive and well. l .-- 108 suicide. ,J 1- 8 ta,.:ye,a2x,,? L f S ' ' . l As the end of the year approached and the weather became warmer, the desire to turn to jeans and things caused Memorial's greatest turmoil. The dress code had been al tered to allow girls to wear slacks during the cold winter months. The males of the school were calling for equal time. A vote was conducted by the Student Council. The result . . . our dress code was abolished. The picutres from My Lai both horrified and shocked the American public. Once again we began to ask ourselves if it was worth it. But even more now we were wondering what kind of people this war would mold us into. Ted Kennedy drove over a bridge this summer. At the same time, in some people's eyes, he committed political W kg, .9 3, ybii s 4 or E ,eeaecaaec lg .PmaAa'f'fues, aaai? Q 14 if Returning as upperclassmen gave us a feeling of power. Death was prevelant in our lives. A title wave caused many people to die and many others to become homeless in Pakistan. Two of the most admired rock stars were gone. Jimi Hendrix and Janis Joplin had died from overdoses. Students were shot and killed at Kent State during demonstrations. But not all of our junior year was overshadowed with darkness. Eighteen year olds acquired the vote. Political cam- paigns no longer seemed so remote. Our time periods were changed from 1-7 to A-J . The hockey sport began to grow. Last year's Stanley Cup championship ignited the spirit of Memorial's own team as they went on to capture their first of two Southern New Hampshire Hockey League Championships. The year ended with our junior prom. For most of us it was the first time we donned formal wear. In spite of trying not to step on our gowns and struggling with suspenders, the night turned out to be one we will never forget. 109 The first days of our senior year brought a jolt to some of us. Faces so familiar from the past three years were miss- ing. We were the seniors, the rulers of the school. No longer was there anybody older or mightier to look up to. There was just each other. We brightened as football season opened. The team whizzed through an undefeated season. Wrapping up the year, our champs defeated Trinity in the midst of one of the season's worst blizzards. MacDonald's grew but was challenged by Burger King. Candidates for the 1972 Presidential election swooned down upon Memorial. Students were given the chanceto ask them the questions that were most pertinent and important to their lives. Applications to colleges were rushed out. Our minds became flooded with thoughts and plans for the future. The time came for cap and govsm measurements and senior singing. Homework and other school projects dwindled while plans for the banquet, prom and finally, graudation, grew. STANTE Lgouop srpaen These plans became reality and our time was at hand. We looked back on our four years. A maze of happy and sad times, of success and failure, and of smiles and tears formed a picture that will never fade . . . 110 l, OFFICIAL PHOTOGRAPHER SINCE 1961 RHEAULT photographers, inc 1061 ELM ST. Turcotte Wendy Webster Championship Team Football Thanksgiving Day, 1971 will live in infamy as far as Memorial High Football is concerned. Not so much for the storm, nor the half time show which fea- tured a half-dozen plows, not even the 12-6 game it- self, but more for the record that was set on that day. The Crusader's unblemished record of 10 wins, no losses and no ties surmounts all previous marks. No longer will the 9-0-0 team of '65 be under the spot- light, because a new star has come upon the scene. This year's squad has all too often heard the story of the team of '65. Yet '71 was a great year too. Plaudits must go to both coaches for doing an excel- lent job. Coaches Bob Chabot and Hubie Mc- Donough will have to put their game plans back into hiding until next fall. Champzonship Team Hockey The class of '72 had a great deal to do with the fantastic record achieved by this year's hockey team. Seniors Jer- ry Gagnon, Dick Proulx, Paul Martel, Gary Gendron, Steve Beaurivage, and Torn Croasdale helped Memorial win the City Title and the Southern New Hampshire League Championship. Memorial became runner up in the state tourney, and, for the first time, participated in the New England Toumament. Underclassmen who will be returning next year to try to duplicate some of this year-'s records include Dave Croasdale, John Corriveau, Guy Croasdale, Marcel Gagnon, Kono Nolet, Wax Johnson, Billy Rogers, Ber- nie Martel, Bob dePinquertaine. :si .X . We don't know il the skills learned by the young men will help lhem become better doctors and lawyers-although their association with McDonaId's certainly has some bearing on their ability to pursue professional careers in the lirst place. The tact may be that a good bun man makes a better doctor than a non-bun man. Who knows? Then again. maybe some ol the young men will become McDonald's operators. even owners.
