Z4 H3 i 3 2 4 OU1' I-IC8I'tS Were Young and Gay by Mary Sander Remember that long-awaited, yet dreaded day, September 4th, 1960, when we entered Memorial as the first freshman class? Those early weeks were hectic: we were sent in quest of green elevators and underground tunnels, we dropped books, fell over saw- horses, and treated workmen like teachers- or visa-versa. Do you remember also the puddles in the lower level every time it rained, and the time that we were able to sit on the trophy case? As a freshman class, we really got off to a unique beginning. Because the gym and auditorium weren,t completed, our first pop rally was held in the cafeteria. What a thrill to sing, Cheer, cheer for MMHS . . . U with all the other Mem- orialites. The excitement of having our own cheering squad and football team aroused the hopes of many aspiring cheerleaders and future athletes, within the next three years, they, too, could join the ranks. At the Memorial-Central football game, school spirit ran high, and amidst shouts of encouragement, the Crusaders, under the guidance of Coach Iauron, rolled to an 8-6 victory. Thus Memorial established her first tradition-the tradition of beating Central- which we would maintain throughout our remaining three years. During November of '61, our Student Council held a mock Presidential election. Supporters of Senator Iohn F. Kennedy and Vice President Richard M. Nixon delivered speeches, waved banners and led snake dances through the special assembly in the cafeteria. Caught up in all the excitement, Memorialites cast their votes secretly, the ma- jority for Iohn F. Kennedy, the victor. Meanwhile, under the direction of Mr. Richard White, the Memorial chorus and band were formed. Throughout the year, these two musical units presented many fine programs which made us all very proud of our school. Band members, finding them- selves decked out in Civil Warn uniforms for so they claimedj, began the fight for new uniforms which ended in victory three years later. With the basketball season came Mem- orialis Hrst trophy-the Queen City Cham- pionship. The Crusaders forged ahead to the State semi-finals at Durham, and won fourth place in the Class L standing. While the basketball team was hard at work in the gy m, the track team took to the corridors of the lower level. Freshmen team members were W'ayne Hoitt, Tom Lalos, Roger Lewis, Bob Peacock, Paul Raiche and Frank Reczkowski. These enthusiastic speed- sters raced up and down the hall, delighted to make good time, and equally pleased if they were able to send any curious by-stand- ers scurrying for safety. The biggest event of the spring - other than spring fever - was Memorial Week. Under the careful planning of the Student Council, numerous events were held, includ- ing a jazz show, presented by members of the three public high schools. Climaxing a week of feverish campaigning was the Memorial Week Semi-Formal, dur- ing which Bob Lucci and Carol LaDuke were crowned Mr. and Miss Memorial. As we departed for summer vacation, we looked back on numerous accomplishments. Many clubs and organizations had been formed, reputations had been established, and traditions had begun. In just a few short months, the Class of '64 would return to Memorial as sophomores, eager in return to send the incoming freshman class in search of a red, vwhite, and blue elevator and a heated swimming pool. Days to Remember by Mark U tell As sophisticated sophomores we had now transcended the frustrations of a most chal- lenging freshman year. We had taken the initial step on our journey to our senior year and our first act was one of revenge-we constantly razzed the confused freshmen. Determined to take an active part in school activities, we most anxiously awaited the elec- tion of student council delegates. The repre- sentatives chosen were Ioyce Freese, Carol Connors, Charlotte Lemire, Dawn Maine, Mary Sander, Dawn Winn, Carol Bodner, and Paul Pickles. Our football team did not have its most outstanding year, but we considered it a suc- cess when our team again defeated arch rival Central High. Members of the football team included Bill Grant, Ronald Lafreniere, Gary Psaledas, Craig Sampson, Larry Walsh and Darrell Buck. This was just another one of those years, and although our basketball quintet was loaded with talent, bad breaks kept us out of the tournament. However, such standouts as Bill Lucci, Stan Urban and Darrell Buck were destined to lead the team to better for- tune in the future years. During january, Mr. Boulogiane's English classes were given the unique opportunity to attend a presentation of Iulius Ceasar at Ply- mouth Teacher's College. Since the reading of the play was a must, it was truly an un- forgetable experience to see the play brought to life. Our new music teacher and band leader, Mr. Mirabile, helped to make the year more enjoyable as his band not only added to the assemblies and pep rallies but also fpresentcd many fine concerts. The growing Memorial chorus treated the students to a recital before Christmas and again during the spring. Memorial Week-our final big event- brought out our true school spirit! We saw campaign posters from one end of the build- ing to the other as the candidates struggled to be the elected representatives of the stu- dent body. The Memorial Week Dance cli- maxed the activities with the crowning of Andy Kyriazis and Sallyann julian as Mr. and Miss Memorial. And thus our sophomore year ended: a year that can be remembered for the intro- duction of the twist, and a year responsible for such popular songs as 'cMoon River, 4'Crying,,' and 'cThe Wandererf, With a feeling of pride we left Memorial that spring knowing that in September her doors would once agafin open to present us with a new year full of different adventures. it ft nib i. G'1'Cat EXPCCt2ltiO1'lS by Anne Hudson The day we had long awaited for finally came, we were now proud upperclassmen, and along with the Seniors we would now be the leaders of our school. This was not only an important year status-wise, but also the year we would begin to plan for our future. Our football season opened in October of 1962 and proved to be one of the greatest seasons ever played, we became not only the City Champions but the Division I State Champions. Iunior halfback Darrell Buck was a great asset to our team, and was duly rewarded by his election as a co-captain on next yearls team and by his election to the first team of Division I, All-State Football Team. Other Iuniors who helped in the eight-win, one-loss season were Bob Peacock, Stan Urban, Ron LaFreniere, Roland Ber- geron. Craig Samson, Larry Walsh, Bill Lucci, Ray Hannemann, Iames Gott, and Bill Grant. The class offices were filled by three popu- lar and notable members of our class: Chair- man, Ted Kounelasg Secretary, Mary Sander, and Treasurer, Mark Utell. December 14th opened the basketball sea- son at Keene, followed by a good season of playing. Iunior members on the team in- cluded Tom Reno, Larry Walsh, Bill Lucci, Stan Urban, Richard Balboni, Darrell Buck, and Bob Peacock. We must not forget to thank and pay roc- ognition to Mr. Mirabile and the school band for the Hne music they provided at our foot- ball games and at our assemblies. The band added the extra pep at these events, and made everyone feel ,proud of being a Mem- orial High School student. Then came the special day, February lst, when twenty-eight upperclassrnen, in recog- nition of their outstanding scholastic achieve- ment and fine qualities of Character and leadership, were admitted to the National Honor Society. Iuniors so honored were Carol Chakas, Dorothy Coolidge, Betsy Cor- nell, Betty nn Carruth, Sharon Kotekas, Claudette Morin, Mary Sander, Charlene Schmidtchen, Barbara Smith, anfd Mark Utell. The next event on the Iunior agenda was our record hop on February 9th. Following this event the whole school enjoyed the an- nual Foreign Students Day on February l3th, when the school was host to ten foreign students. Mr. Bronstein was surprised When, during the assembly, he was presented, by Miss Ivy Lyew of Iamaica, with a penciled portrait of himself. Memorial Week began March 25th and ended March 29th. Sue Doukas and Lee Parmenter won the students' votes. As usual it was hard to get back into the groove after such a week of excitement, fun, and school spirit. Special mention should be given to two Iuniors who won State Science Fair prizes at the annual New England Science Fair: Ioe Saide, who won a prize in the chemistry division, and Mike Bober, who was awarded an honorable mention in physics. Iune 8th marked the Iunior Prom, an event we had been waiting for since our Freshman year. It was a beautiful, calm, balmy evening with a full moon shining on the patio and ballroom, bedocked for our theme, Camelot',. The queen was Paula Raiche and her attendants were Ioan Ner- borne, Peggy Sheehan, Carol Thurston, and lean Gendron. So ended a year of hard work and fun, but we looked forward to another wonder- ful, rewarding year in hopes that it would leave as great a memory in our minds and hearts. The Setting Sun D by Pamela Scribner September 2, 1963 was an important day for the Class of 1964--the beginning of our senior year. As soon as school started, Mem- orial's football team, the Crusaders, was on the gridiron. Leading the team to a success- ful 6-5 record were Darrell Buck and lack O'Neil, co-captains, and other senior team- mates, Bob Peacock, Ray Hanneman, Craig Samson, Ken Stone, Bill Lucci, Ronnie La- freniere, Larry Walsh, Gary Psaledas, Stu Cohen, Iim Gott, and Walter Domian. Boosting school spirit were the cheerlead- ers and majorettes: Charlotte Lemire, Dayle Rojek, Ianice Howe, Shar-on Kotekas, Ioyce Freese, Iune Ryan, Brenda Heath, Ioyanne Garrish, Carol Bodner, and Ellen Sansoucie. Senior officers of the Student Council were Mark Utell, presidentg Mary Sander, vice- president, Kathy Hagianis, secretaryg Stuart Cohen, executive chairman. Senior class representatives were elected and Ted Kounelas was chosen as president, Carol Connors as vice president, Dayle Rojek as secretary, and Mike Ansley as treasurer. Under the direction of Mr. MacDonald, the senior class presented their play, Star- dust , on November 15th, 16th, and 17th. No one will forget Kathy Hagianis' line, Peeled or unpeeled, and the spontaneous parties which followed many rehearsals. Iust before the Thanksgiving recess, the entire student body and the world were saddened by the tragic assassination of Presi- dent Iohn F. Kennedy. Without much pre- paration, three Memorial seniors, Iohn Mur- ray, Dave Fitzpatrick, and Wayne Hoitt journeyed to Washington D. C. to witness the funeral procession, and then to relate to classmates their observations of and exper- iences at the sad event. In the middle of December, Memorial hoopsters began a fair basketball season, with Bill Luoci and Dick Balboni leading as co- caiptains. Other seniors on the team were Larry Walsh, Dick Proux, and Tom Reno. Keeping up with the current enthusiasm over folk-singing, the Student Council held a hootenanny in the auditorium on Ianuary 18th. This was the year for Peter, Paul, and Mary, the Kingston Trio, the Brothers Fqur, and, of course, the Beatles. Remember the popular songs,- I Want to Hold Your Handn, K'Little Boxes , There 1've Said It Againu, Dominique',, and Blowing in the Windn? In February, a new advanced studies pro- gram was launched at St. Anselm's College, with twelve Memorial High seniors partici- pating each Saturday for fifteen weeks. Re- ceiving letters of commendation for attain- ing outstanding scores on the National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test, were 'Ilhomas Lalos, Bruce Monk, Charlene Schmidtchen, Betsy Cornell, and Henry Simonds. The next events to occur were the senior Record Hop in late February, and Memorial Week in early April. All-State Chorus, Band, and Orchestra began to assemble in April, too, with Ioyce Freese, Ioyanne Garrish, Gary Webster, Michael McLeod, George Champion, representing the senior partici- pants, and Mary Sander. Leading Memorial to many victories in cross-country, winter and spring track were seniors Tom Lalos, Roger Lewis, Tim Mc- Duffy, Frank Reczkowski, Wally Weeks, and Darrell Buck. The final senior activities: Class Day, the senior banquet, and the senior reception took place the week of Iune 7th, As we looked back upon our past year, we remembered fond experiences, but looked forward to the future with new hopes and expectations, whether we were going to college, serving in the armed forces, or working in the busi- ness world.
