As you attain maximum growth and development, you become aware of your rights and duties as an American citi- zen. Education's role is to teach you how to live successfully in a society of material plenty. You must realize that these material blessings you enjoy are not self-perpetuating -that to live the fuller life you must seek the truth, serve human needs and as Abraham Lincoln said, Be sure you put your feet in the right place and then stand firm. Educa- tion essentially entails the solving of basic problems of modern life-bringing our moral and spiritual capabilities into balance with our technological progress. It is the wish of the Board of Education, administration and the teaching staff, that the foundation laid, the training and exper- ience you have had while in school, will enable you to build a life enriched by useful accomplishments, kind deeds, and real service. OFFICE -wi g 1 I li Frank A Semperger Assistant Superintendent Instruction 8 Special Services 13 The future belongs to those who prepare for it was the motto of our recent graduating classes. This motto is so true today when the world we live in demands so much preparation of its young people in the form of education for life's work. I hope the students of Melvindale High School prepare through study and activity for a future of success and service to the community. My congra- tulations to the Yearbook Staff and their sponsor for again bringing us a fine Yearbook. Robert C . Nunn Principal PRINCIPAl'S 0FFlCE Student citizenship in the High School is based on the proposition that the stu- dent has reached the age of responsibility and will carry on his daily school life on the same high level of conduct as the best types of older adults. Carrying on as an adult involves a number of qualities of character such as self-control, honesty, cooperation, sincerity, and constant at- tempt to be womanly and manly. CLASS FAREWEll Melvindale High School--- three glorious words which fill our hearts with pride and our minds with wonderful memories. Graduation represents twelve years of our lives--years of hard workg yet never have we obtained anything so great and still had a sharp inward sense of misgiving and hesitation. As we stand at the threshold of graduation we stand looking at the world with its many opportunities , we wonder about the future, and we remember the past. We remember our successes and our failures, our happiness and our sorrow, our hard work and our hours of play, our cheering and singing and working for our school. We won't forget these things . We can't forget friends and foundations which will set the pattern of our lives for years to come. We can only be thankful for the past and hopeful for the future. We add our footsteps to those who have gone before us in these familiar halls, and we leave our accomplishments to be added to those of other classes for the glory of our school. May this yearbook be a record of the past and a challenge for the future to our class, the senior class of 1956. Both teams' offenses were slowed down by a muddy field and a wet fall and the game was strictly defensive as the two teams fought to a O-O tie. The following week Melvindale traveled to Romulus to meet a highly rated rival. Melvindale, being underdogs, fought above expectations and returned home with a 15-7 victory. Melvindale was in the victory column again as they avenged a year-old 46-0 defeat, when they met Dearborn on a mud- soaked field and walloped them 20-0. Melvindale then traveled to Ecorse, where their defense once again stood out as t.hey battled a favored Ecorse powerhouse to a 0-O tie. The following two weeks were disastrous. The Dales lost the Little Brown jug to Lincoln Park by a score of 20-0. Melvindale was defeated in their homecoming game with Edsel Ford 13-O. They bounced back the following week, however, and defeated Lowry, 25-O. In the final game, Melvin- dale lost a hard-fought tussle with River Rouge, 14-6, and finished with a season record of three wins-four losses-two ties. In a post season meeting, the squad elected Frank Nagy and Bill Wolf as co-captains and jim Garrett was elected the most valuable player of the year. Harold Calihan was chosen by the Mellus Newspapers as a member of the Mellus All-Area team. Melvindale will lose these four players plus nine others due to gaduation. The others are Lawance Albas, Fred Baker, Mario Bonfiglio, John S. Chapo, Gary Grant, jon Krueger, George Lowe, Ted Savard and john Wilkins. We lost a few we maybe could have won, but on the whole we've had a pretty fair season. I expect we'll do much better next year. This was the opinion of Varsity Coach Leo Turner of the past '55-'56 basketball season. The Cards finished the season with a 9-6 win-loss record. The Melvindale Cagers started the season with a bang by walloping Romulus 62-41 and nosing out Lowrey 63-60. The following two weeks the Cardinals met some stiff competition and saw defeat in the form of Wyandotte and Detroit Cath- olic Cenual, by the scores of 60-53 and 69-54. The Redbirds then bounced back in the following two games and defeated Dearborn 42-38 and battled Allen Park to a 47-42 win. The Cards' home court was then invaded and a highly rated rival, River Rouge, returned with a 62-45 win. The next week Melvindale reached the half-way point in the season when they met Ecorse away and the high spirited Red Raiders came from behind in the second half to defeat the Cards 45-42. The Cardinal season standing at this point was 4 wins and 4 losses. The Cagers then met Lincoln Park on the Melvindale home court and emerged on top by a 49- 36 score. Melvindale then traveled to Edsel Ford and the Huron Valley Champs spelled out a 53-41 defeat for the Redbirds. They returned home for their next encounter and defeated Dearborn for the second time in the season 45-43. The outcome of the next clash found River Rouge holding the edge over Melvindale 49-30. In the final three games of the season Melvindale averaged an early season defeat and edged out Ecorse 49-42 and walloped Lincoln Park and Lowrey 50-40 and 57-37. Melvindale drew River Rouge for their first past season tournament game. Rouge was the state class B champs last year and are strong contenders for the position this year. The Cardinals entered the game as underdogs who were to give the Panthers no competition but, however, they played ex- cellent control ball and at one point in the game they lead 9-6. The Panthers managed to rally in the last half and nosed out the Cards 27-23. The game was encouraging, however, to both the Cardinal Coach and players. In the final Twin Valley League standings, Melvindale was tied with Ecorse for second place. xg K ..,.. s A q' XX fic '57 X Q . 9. M , xl af, ,X Ygvjg ,H ,A . 5 5 2.2 41. E. Help me to keep my mind and my eyes on the road, while my heart rests in Thee. Let me see in each of those who walk or ride the image of Thyself, Dear Lord. As I thank Thee for the blessings of modern travel, grant that I bear the crosses of traffic in the spirit of true penance. Keep me in Thy gracious charity, so that all my journeying may end at last in Thee. Compliments of Leo Leddy AUTEN'S INSURANCE AGENCY 131 JAMES E. AUTEN WA 8-1324 EAA..- -L ,...4............s.n.
