SENIOR CLASS Erghteen members of the Senror' class wrth 'Vlrss St Clarr 'Vlrss Wrse man and Mr Moore as chaperones lerft on the Melvrn Srbley Senror trrp on Frrday afternoon June 2nd They traveled by school bus to Chr cago where they boarded the S 5 Western States of the D Sz C Nayr gatron Co at the Navy Prer S S Western States rs a steel hulled '3 deck shrp 400 ft long and 80 it wrde It s powered by a 5 OO horse power steam engrne and drryen by two 30 ft paddle wheels After berng conducted t therr staterooms the students hurrred to eat drnner so that they mrght be on deck at sarlrng trme In the drnrrrg room were cats for Zoo so that the 450 students and sponsors on board were servtd rn two srttrngs T t food and scryrce was excellent and the students WCIL told they toud lave all they wanted to eat eve'r tt fourth and fifth helprngs Sarlrng trme yvas scheduled for 7 p m but drflicultres rn pumprng fu l orl on board delaved thrs untrl 10 p m A hard thunder storm droye the students rn off the decks to dance to the shrps band or to play cards or wrrte letters At 10 p n the shrps whrstlt sounded a deep blast and the shrp slowly moy ed from the prer Gurded by radar rt sarled out through the entrance of the breakwater rnto blrndrng rarn There was no oflicral bedtrme hour o many students stayed up to hours of the mornrng From is a rr untrl 12 p m groups of sponsor were on duty patrolrng the decks and stateroom corrrdors Moore drew the 10 12 p m grave yard watch on C deck After 1 p m the patrol was taken over b the specral watchmen of the shrp Mornrng found the shrp about 1 mrles off Ludrngton, Mrchrgarr The lake was smooth and the day CRUISE was sunny but a cold northwest wrnd held the temperature to about oo ue grees Dancrng, prng pong, shuffl board, wrrtrng or Just plarn loafing on the deck rn a deck chan fwell wrapped rn a blanketj occupred the dav Many lake frerghters were seen as yyell as two sarl boats afternoon the shrp was passrng through the rslands at the lower end of Lakt Wirth n and entered the Strarts of 'Vlackrnac At 7 p nr the shrp was docked at Mackmac Island Nfackrnac Island rs an rsland wrth out autonrobrles T ere are J.1St three motors on the rsland, two fire trucks and an ambulance Drawn up along' mam street were a long lrnt of three-reated surreys The students loaded rn or rtrrted brtytlts and a tour of the rsland was taken Ont mterestrng srght was a frm ed to surrey wrth the word Tam parnted on the srde At 10 I or for the entrance t the St Marys Rry er A calm lake and a moonlrght nrght and rn the nrommg a rn the shrp tred up at e foot of the famous Soo locks Aft r breakfast the Catholrc students tended Mass rn Sault Ste Niarre and the others watched the shrps passrng through the lock Sarlrng trne was 11 a rn and was followed by a Protestant church seryrce The shrp slowly steamed down the St Vlarys Rryer through a heayy traiflc of lake frerghters About 7 p rn he town of Detour was passed and the shrp entered Lake Huron A strong wrnd wa blowrng out of the Strarts of Vlackrnac and he water was choppy The shrp beean to roll a lrtt e and the act of Hu mg was more lrke a stagger Left Trmcke and Brll Crouch became lrttle seasrck but rn two hour he choppy water was pas ed d lake was agarn smooth . .
