MESSINA. “You’ll like it after you learn it.” Mr. Messina’s wonderful piano playing, warm ups on “na” at 8:30. First concert in fall of 1979, many interesting convos with Mr. Messina. Mr. Messina’s rough “trip” rules. No breathing between 8:00 and 9:00, ‘‘Anyone interested in T-shirts, sweaters?” ‘‘Eagles belong where? rivers can what?” Gone Gone sops! “Something like that” “More bass!” Sopranos on lu. Mr. Messina’s lectures, good times with Derik Adams, “I need this like a hole in the head.” “You look nice today.” “Does anyone have an extra copy for the klutz at the piano?” “You look comfortable today.” “A-block sounded better,” Mr. Messina, alias Comissioner Lloyd. “I want to hear one “t” not 60!”, “Next place” Hold it! JAZZMATAZZ We will never forget the good (and strange) times we’ve had together, especially after the Pops concerts — at the Wakefield gazebo in ’78 and at Rita’s house in ’79. “Remember you’re a select group people” we need more rehearsals - ‘‘O.K., rehearsal at my house Monday night” A concert in 3 weeks?! We’ll never be ready! “Does anyone have a black skirt I can borrow?” We will always remember Mr. Mess’ for everything he gave us and taught us. He was always there when that Mood Indigo struck. “Love is gay? I’m not gonna sing that!” Most of all “Solitude” just “Don’t Mean a Thing” as we look down that “Lonesome Road” to the future because we will have these “Moments to Remember.” 23
