Regan All students interested in joining the French Club should meet tomorrow at 2:30 in Rm 246. “Where’s room 246?” After everyone located the new room and ties were broken plans were made to begin another busy year. With over fifty enthusiastic members the club began the year by inviting German exchange students and their hosts to a volleyball game. This prepared the club for the annual French vs. Spanish volleyball game, which ended with the French defending their title. Later the group celebrated a Joyeaux Noel (com- plete with Pierre Noel) at the International Christmas Party held in the Cafe. The traditional dessert party was held at a member’s home, complete with mousse au chocolat and other fattening desserts. Two French plays and the year-end banquet rounded out the busy year. Memories include: numerous ties, French frog power, “brief meetings”, posters, Killing the Spanish (again)!, food, but on a Saturday night?, and of course merci, Madame Dooley, we couldn’t have done it without you!!! .Arriba los Espaholes! The Spanish Club started the year with a great volleyball game against the French Club. This year we were ready. After 16 games, the score was tied 8-8. Although we didn’t win in a rematch, spirits still ran high. ,Que pena! Better luck next year, gang! The Club rounded off the year with a successful and fun Interna- tional Christmas Party which featured games, skits, songs and great food, an e nd of the year dinner and other activities including the enthusiastic sale of candles. We would like to thank Miss Galante and Mr. Riccio for making it a great year! SPANISH CLUB front row (L-R): Ms. Galante, Advisor, S. Sybicki, M. Jackman, F. Glennon, L. Clark, Co-President, C. CHESS CLUB In its first year under its new advisor, Mr. Studley, the Chess Club got off to a slow start. With only one veteran player, Nick Agretelis, the Club suffered a disheartening loss to Peabody. After many afternoons of diligent prac- tice, however, the Club rallied to a decisive win over Masconomet and an encour- aging victory over Lynnfield. The Chess Club even im- proved their record enough to qualify for the league playoffs, something last year’s team was unable to do. P. Degnan, K. Tucker, J. Fox, M. Maccario, K. Simonelli, M. Petti, Mr. Studley. What team goes to Amherst by way of New Hampshire? The MHS Debate Team, of course. The team defended its second- place state title by holding piz- za parties, ping-pong tourna- ments, yoga sessions, and roller skating. Memories include: the Artie tournament, the Lexington “mutes”, purple worms at “Motel Six”, Truth and Dare at 3 a.m., U. Mass in log cabins, the M.C. blob, home from Suffolk in 3 hours, the $20 pin-ball machine, Davy Crock- ett, pressing weights at New England’s, the everlasting choruses of “DRINK”; If you want directions, ask FIF, B.B. or J.P. Under the expert coaching of our fearless leader, FTF, the MHS Debate Softball Team will be ready to take on any chal- lenger this spring. DEBATE TEAM Front Row (L to R) E. McMahon, B. Sousa, K. THE FRENCH-SPANISH VOLLEYBALL GAME OR THE SPANISH-FRENCH VOLLEYBALL GAME Marybeth Egan The determined French and the Spanish challengers met in the gym on November 20, 1979, for the second annual French vs Spanish Club Volley- ball Game that would decide this year’s champion. Three weeks before, the two teams had battled each other, only to end in a tie. So with the French defending the title and the Spaniards trying to secure it for the first time, an exciting game could be expected. Both teams played confidently and well. Showing their strength in height, the Spaniards came close to capturing the crucial final game. But the spirited French team played to a decisive victory shutting out the diminished opposition in the end. For the second year in a row, the French Club has asserted its strength. Better luck next year, Spaniards! Calvin Frank Sefior McLean Madame Dooley Kathy Crowther SO Sharon Olsen Kelly Marchant
