beginning In all, we have been through sizzling summers without air- conditioning... For the last six consecutive years or 1,080 mornings, we have rolled out of bed and wandered from all direct- ions to this community called Melrose High School. You may not realize it, but we have lived through quite a lot collectively and individually. You may be astonished by the realization that together we have half-listened to 7,560 minutes of morning announcements; 18.760 bells and buzzers; 51,000 min- utes of English; and a total of 368,400 minutes of school — And what have we gained from this experience? Some gained a few pounds, some grew a few inches, others received “Gasid Indig- estion and a few of us developed Excederin Headaches 3,143 - 7,872. But we have all become, mainly with each other, adults— people ready to face the world. We began as kids about twelve years old, set loose in the Junior High Jungle. Mass confusion prevailed through our first few weeks as we asked such abstractions as What day is this? What block is this?” “WHAT IS A BLOCK?” and ‘ ‘Who do I give my elevator ticket to?” Yet, astoundingly enough, things got progressively more chaotic. A new high school, another hour and a half of classes, and BACON BURGERS were added to our high school career.

Ourselves We have come from differ- ent directions and have been thrown together only because we live within the boundaries of the same city. Though at first immaturity and self-conscious- ness prevented us from being different from the clusters of freshmen who trudged to school everyday at noon, we have emerged true individuals-each with something special to offer the Melrose High community. Though at first we con- formed, now we have the confidence to be ourselves. We are together, and yet apart.
