Nineteen Hundred Seventy Seven LOG MELROSE HIGH SCHOOL MELROSE, MASSACHUSETTS Turn the page, look inside, share our good times, a laugh, a smile, and remember... beginning In all, we have been through sizzling summers without air- conditioning... For the last six consecutive years or 1,080 mornings, we have rolled out of bed and wandered from all direct- ions to this community called Melrose High School. You may not realize it, but we have lived through quite a lot collectively and individually. You may be astonished by the realization that together we have half-listened to 7,560 minutes of morning announcements; 18.760 bells and buzzers; 51,000 min- utes of English; and a total of 368,400 minutes of school — And what have we gained from this experience? Some gained a few pounds, some grew a few inches, others received “Gasid Indig- estion and a few of us developed Excederin Headaches 3,143 - 7,872. But we have all become, mainly with each other, adults— people ready to face the world. We began as kids about twelve years old, set loose in the Junior High Jungle. Mass confusion prevailed through our first few weeks as we asked such abstractions as What day is this? What block is this?” “WHAT IS A BLOCK?” and ‘ ‘Who do I give my elevator ticket to?” Yet, astoundingly enough, things got progressively more chaotic. A new high school, another hour and a half of classes, and BACON BURGERS were added to our high school career. And through the laughter, we shared growing up, and growing away. 3 Ourselves We have come from differ- ent directions and have been thrown together only because we live within the boundaries of the same city. Though at first immaturity and self-conscious- ness prevented us from being different from the clusters of freshmen who trudged to school everyday at noon, we have emerged true individuals-each with something special to offer the Melrose High community. Though at first we con- formed, now we have the confidence to be ourselves. We are together, and yet apart. TABLE of CONTENTS I I am I, A person with my own standings, With my own beliefs, my own personality. A part of the school, a part of my friends Yet separate and unique, in my own way. Our interests as well as our personali- ties, determine our academic goals. There are, of course, memories of our high school years that we would all care to forget. For example, the many weekends we swore we would spend catching up on all the homework we had put off the week before, instead staying up until 1:00 a.m. Monday morning trying to finish it. And this was only to be surpassed by the “Term Paper Syndrome’’ which occurred in almost epidemic proportions in June, when almost all of the potential scholars spent their free time on the beach. The victims of this dreaded disease often found themselves surrounded by incomprehensible books in some stuffy library, toiling away at footnotes, paren- thetical references, and bibliographies. An alert listener in the library would hear the students grumble such questions as “What is a parenthetical reference?’’, “Why did I choose this topic?’ , and the ever famous, ‘ ‘Why am I here? As if this was not enough , there was still another dreaded academic disease that struck the class of ’77. This disease, scientifically referred to as “Procrastina- tion Lackadiasical Dilemma,’’ is better known as “Senioritis’’. The symptoms were easily recognized by constant drowsiness, an inability to carry books home, a deep hatred for libraries, and a noticeable drop in grades. The cure was simple: get to bed at nine o’clock every evening, do homework every afternoon, and finally, cut down on the number of nights out. The problem was no one would take the cure, the disease was much too fun ! ACADEMICS I 71 Where We Live Our Lives So That We May Learn To Live ' • This year marked the return of the traditional New England winter. A series of blizzards caused personal agony and brought life in Melrose, as well as in the rest of the country, to a stand still. A shortage of energy and patience arose. “Cabin Fever’’ was an ailment of all high school students as they received an extra week of vacation with no way to get out and enjoy it. The sub-zero temperatures forced even winter frolic in the snow out of the question. Man, so proud of his technological advances, has been proven vulnerable to the ever changing New England weather. Black outs, school cancellations, and the outrageously deplorable con- ditions of Melrose streets were all factors contributing to the winter that millions of Melrose students will be telling their grandchildren about. “No School, In Melrose, Wakefield All Schools Stoneham, 75 THE LIGHTER SIDE OF ACADEMICS I The variety of MHS people is exemplified by the variety of the clubs. Under the direction of Ms. May and the leadership of President Patti Wood, Vice President Karen Styles, Secretary Tricia Vinchesi, and Treasurer Marianne Savage, the drama club staged a variety of productions and activities. Hours of hard work and preparation for drama competitions as well as the spring produc- tion of Lizzy Borden of Fall River made up the core of the club’s activities. Hard work was not the only diet, however. A first year pot luck supper fol- lowed by original skits performed by club members rounded out the year’s activities. To concentrate, to observe, to create was the motto, the goal, and the spirit which brought it all together for the ’77 drama club. Front Row: P. May, Advisor, A. Zebrowski, C. Mouradian, S. Club officers were faced with a rather unusual prob- lem, one that other clubs would have welcomed; name- ly. the over-zealousness and enthusiasm of over 300 club members, many of whom could not make the club pic- ture. Highlights of the year in- cluded re-enactments of the battles of Iwo Jima and Mid- way. held at the Knoll and Ell Pond respectively. Another major feat of the club was the sinking of the Argo Merchant in an effort to emphasize the hazards the merchant marine faced in WW II. The Student Congress is a representative group of a cross section of the student population. Under the chairmanship of Dan Hughes, Congress is working towards improving privileges and condi- tions of Melrose High Students. Also, a strong attempt to loosen rules and regulations is made by granting new responsibilities to the students. Beside sponsoring an assembly for all the students, a good effort has been made to create an activity period for all the students to enjoy. They have established a tutoring program for the junior and senior high schools, and are sponsoring the Ms. Knorr Scholarship Fund. The Club’s future plans include sponsoring a career day to help indecisive students acknowledge career opportunities. Although faced with many problems, the National Honor Society believes that they have set the groundwork for future academically superior students to provide beneficial services. tpml Peter Hiedkamp (Literary Editor), Lawrence Savage (Editor-in-Chief), Peter Borghetti (Sports Editor). The Imprint has changed this year in a very significant way. Instead of being strictly a chronicle of school news, they have placed more of an emphasis on the community of Melrose, and how MHS con- tributes to the city’s atmos- phere. The staff has been try- ing to show the students that they have had some influence in making Melrose what it is today. They have not lost sight of the fact that the Im- print has been a part of MHS for over forty years and are trying to continue this tradi- tion by keeping abreast of the activities within the school. The ’77 Aviation Club was dedi- cated to the active investigation of all aspects of aviation and aeronautics. The organization of the modern air- port, the functions of complex flight controls, as well as introductions to sky diving and hang gliding were all explored by this year’s club. Field trips and lectures were important supplements to weekly meetings. Trips to Hand Passer Laboratory in Pease Air Force base, as well as a lec- ture on parachuting, were enjoyed by all. Wednesday afternoons found the members of the auto club busy at work in the “pit”, taking apart and reconstructing auto engines and bodies. The goal was simply to learn all one could about the mechanics of the auto. There was a little money making in the air. Also from time to time old cars were fixed up and sold, building up the club treasury a bit. This year’s club started things rolling for the eventual construction of a Mel- rose High car to be used for drag rac- ing. The posse, depicted as smiling faces and blazing saddles, was a perceptive group and learned to avoid tricky situations by appreciating the anatomy of a horse. So, as they ride into the sunset, all that remains is a cloud of dust, the future is bright for the Eques- trian Club. Front Row: Mr. Studley, F. Solari, W. Cotterly, R. Diamond, M. Andrews. They were selected to play with the Massachusetts Northeast District, M.E.A. orchestra. Roy Rudolph and James Henderson were also picked for the Massachusetts All-State Orchestra. The ' 76 season began with summer practices 3 or 4 times weekly to learn new formations, stunts and to perfect the routines which would be performed throughout the season. The work continued with weekly practices during the fall months. However this season was not all work, and practice — after the memories of late night practices have dimmed, the tumblers will remember ’76 as the season of new uniforms, pre- game brunches and pre-game rallies, pit A performances, many long laughs and lasting good times. 109 Front Row: K. Each Fall, senior girls march out on the Melrose High Athletic Field to prove to an amazed crowd that football is not for boys only. This year was not an exception. In a battle between the Columbian Reds and the White Punks, the final victors proved to be the White Punks. The game was close and the referees admitted that calling the plays was a difficult task. Both teams lost valuable players due to injuries, but the participants who suffered the most were the cheerleaders who were not used to wearing short skirts in such chilly weather. 113 PORTS Jean McLaughlin escaping over the electric fence. Led By Capta in Peter Nolan, the Raiders were determined from the outset to make it a good season for the returning Coach Hoague. At no time, however, did they give up, as is indicated by the large amount of ties and one goal game. Co-Captain Scott Colborne made All-League while Steve Denning and Steve Matteucci received honorable mention. In the Woburn meet, for example, Mark Hemenway achieved his first victory in the 2-mile while co-captain Bob Shea threw a career iong shot put of 42’7 V 2 ” . The following week in Burlington, Billy DeYoung posted a 10:24 in the 2-mile and Carl Maccario a 2:27 on the 1000 yard run to lead the Raiders to a solid 38-47 victory. Overcoming such set backs as bad weather, and injuries to valuable teammates Tom Plouffe, Carl Maccario, and co-captain Rick Pierce, the trackmen exhibited their true desire and spirit. A victory over traditional rival Wakefield ended the season on an optimistic note. Led by captain Steve (Gumper) Williams, who was undefeated through the regular season, the wrestlers ended the season in a three way tie for the Middlesex League title with Wakefield and Reading. Highlighting the season was a thrilling one- point victory over Reading. In this meet, Williams gave the Raiders a four point lead with a 5-0 win over a 187 pound foe, who had previously defeated him in the Lowell Tournament. Dave Leonard clinched the match by preventing himself from being pinned while on his back the last 30 seconds of this unlimited weight contest. Other contributing seniors on Frank Ball’s team were Bob Travis, Glen Wells and Ken Winsor. Although girls had been important members of the Melrose “boys” swim teams for the past several years, 1976 marked the first year of a separate and independent girl ' s team which competed in an all female league. The team performed admirably under the direction of coach Dick Whitworth. The first year record was very respectable. Young spirit, hard work, promise for the future, as well as the set backs of inexperience and youth all surfaced during this opening season. Improvement was also a key word. Sue Butler, Kim Niquist, Linda Glazier, and Pam Downey all showed signs of personal improvement. Daily practices to trim seconds off of the relay and to smooth out those choppy backstrokes paid off both for the team and for the individuals. Six girls, including senior Capt. Joanne Davidson, earned spots in state and regional post season tournament competition. Returning members are looking forward to an expanded schedule for their second year of competition. Contributing seniors were Joanne Davidson, Capt., Barbara Dennen, Pam Downey, Linda Glazier, and Pat Penney . . . This was a team of tremendous spirit and ability, as shown by a great come- from-behind victory over a tough Winchester team. Todd Burne won the 50 yard free style: the divers (C. Palmer, P. Borghetti. and M. McManus) took 1-2-3; and Ed Kodzis won the 100 yard butterfly to set up the meet deciding final relay. In a close race the foursome of J. Driscoll, P. Winslow, T. Burne and E. Kodzis won the relay, and thus the meet 43-40. The outcome of the Jan. 31 meet against Lexing- ton was the deciding factor for ti e Middlesex League title. Plays like these continued throughout the season to produce another outstanding team. Hard work and discipline from the pre-season and throughout the year has kept this year s team in top form, as shown by the 4-2 victory over League powerhouse Stoneham. Defense has been one of Melrose’s strong points this year, with consistently good plays by goalie Jimmy Boyden and defensemen Scott Colborne and Rick DellaPasqua. Another strong point has been the considerable contributions of the team ' s underclassmen. In the first Woburn game sophomore Rusty Runge scored the hat trick, getting the Raiders first three goals. Another sophomore, Ed Garden, scored the winning goal in the 4-3 victory over the Tanners. The spirit and dedication of the team’s players, including seniors Tom Brussard, Larry Capuano, Skootchie Gregorio, Bob McCaughey and Jack Muse, formed the nucleus of the team ' s success. Concentration and steady performances from the squad led to the season’s high score of 82 points. The all around Mary Beth Stahley broke many personal and team records throughout the year.
