September, 1958 — a young and enthusiastic man with twinkling eyes and a crooked smile becomes a teacher in the history department at Melrose High School. Spring 1970 — There ' s an opening for an assistant principalship in the high school ... in typically Crostonian fashion, the man who seemed a permanent member of the history depart- ment, moves into his new office. . . . Behold the turtle who only makes progress when he sticks his neck out. September 1970 — Fate drops double sessions onto Melrose Junior and Senior High Schools. Claude Croston is deposed to the Junior High where he promptly becomes fond of the Class of ' 75. September 1971 — Another year to weather. And then, as the Class of ' 75 heads toward high school . . . I ' m goin ' right up the ladder with you, you ' re my babies! September 1972 — Everyone watches breathlessly as the new high school grows inch by inch and the Class of ' 75 prays to be its first graduating class. Tomorrow and tomorrow and tomorrow September 1973 — Lines of tardy students pour out of Mr. Croston ' s office and down the hall. Why do the juniors always have to stay after? ... I don ' t care if it ' s 7:00 a.m. or 12 mid- night — get on that phone and call your mother! . . . I didn ' t mean to yell at you, but . . . July 1974 — MR. CROSTON NAMED PRINCIPAL Ain ' t it good to know you ' ve got a friend? September 4, 1974 Senior Assembly — . . .You ' re gonna be happy. I don ' t want anymore of this snob baloney, we ' re gonna be like one big happy family! Do you understand me ? l want happy kids!! There are gonna be some changes made around here! I don ' t want just a good high school, I want the best high school in the WORLD!!!!! And I want you to be the best class in the world!!!!! Captained by Ted Baier, Chris DeChristopher, and Paul Laverty, this year ' s varsity booters completed their most successful season in M.H.S. soccer history. The talent and spirit of the team led them to a fine record of 9 wins, 5 losses, and 2 ties. The narrow loss of only one game prevented them from qualifying for state competi- tion. Highlights of the season were the exciting 2-1 last second victory over Lexington, and the two wins against Winchester. The enthusiasm of Larry Applegate won him the team ' s award for most spir- ited player, Mike O ' Hara, high scorer for the year was duly credited with this title, and Paul Laverty was honored as being most valuable player. Aylward Melrose High has always taken great pride in its hockey tradition. This year ' s version has left nothing to be desired, for the Raiders combined to produce superb team and individual efforts. Led by Tri-Cap- tains Mike O ' Hara, Ted Baier, and Roger Conway, the team compiled a 14-2-2 season record which ranked them second in the Middlesex ■ League and qualified them for the State Tournament. The tremendous con- tributions of five team-mates caused them to be named as League All-Stars, including Brian Hughes, the high scorer with 38 points. The season started with a six game unbeaten streak and was marred only by the two losses to Burlington and Winchester. The most outstanding game was against Woburn, in which the Raiders exploded for two last minute goals to tie the game 4-4. The team scored 100 goals in all, an usual feat for which they are to be highly com- mended. P. Cerretani, E. Paolini, F. LoPilato, M. Hemmenway, P. Annoletto Row 2: D. Field, S. McCoy, T. The Raiders dominated the league with an impressive 7-0 league record, helped by outstanding per- formances by Co-Captains Joe Rooney and Tom Cerretani. The team ' s talent was especially evi- dent in the sectionals when Tom Cerretani, Andy Campbell, Joe Rooney, Bob Skane, and Peter Baldi all took firsts, Bob Dudley and Frank LoPilato took seconds and Tim Lamson a third; enabling the grapplers to gain their second straight Sectional Title. BOYS’ BASKETBALL Led by outstanding Co-Captains Don Chiuve and Bill Killilea, the 1975 Boys ' Basketball team had a fine year with a 12-7 record. Adding to a good season, and much to everyone ' s surprise, the team qualified for the State Tournament. The big three, Don Chiuve, Bill Killilea and Pat Stanton carried the team throughout the entire season. Don finished the year fifth leading scorer in the league while Bill finished third. Assistant Captain, Pat Stanton, contributed excellent ball handling. Also proving to be important keys to the team ' s success were Ken Charlton, John Jacobson, and Neal Jones. Jeff Smith and Kevin Page saw playing time as substitutes. Congratulations to this year ' s team for a season that will long be remembered. Coach Graham, Co-Captains, D. Chiuve, W. They were, however, persistant in their enthusiam, hard work, and deter- mination throughout the entire season. On the tree there were five bunches, and on each bunch there was a top banana. One day, somebody came a long, dug up the tree by the roots and left it homeless. Where would the poor banana tree go? After many weeks of searching, the poor tree found a home. It replanted itself and soon a wild jungle grew up around it — so thick that it could not be penetrated by the normal person. (Although it was frequently penetrated by the not-normal .) In the midst of savages and despite constant bombardment, the banana tree kept on growing, which just goes to show — If you wanna be a top banana, you gotta start at the bottom of the bunch.
